    Peter Boal is an outstanding teacher. I appreciate how he encouraged the students to use their artistry, not just to get everything perfect technically. Also, it's refreshing to see a teacher encourage the students to take risks and reach beyond where they feel secure, without fear of failure in learning. His demeanor is so pleasant. Although this class is a little different in style than what I'm used to, I still think I've learned a lot from it.

    Absolutely stunning the caliber of talent here. They're so good that watching them makes people in the audience think they could actually do it close to that good themselves when in fact, they can't even stand up like these woman can. What most don't understand is the sacrifice they make to get to these levels. Just making these kind of bodies to show on stage takes enormous will power and courage to not gain 20 pounds when everyone else is wrecking another bag of chips and a soda.
    What does bother me a little is that the facial expressions and body language of these girls and so many others I see, kind of says we'd rather be doing something else, or I'm really not enjoying this so much, when I wish they knew just how happy they make most people seeing this talent and expressing something in this crummy world that is full of class, grace and beauty. They're just beautiful athletes and make this world a far better place to live in. Seems like a wonderful instructor too.

    What is the reasoning behind allowing the heels to leave the floor in a demi-plie?

    • @meganorsuwan5622
      @meganorsuwan5622 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Academy of Dance Spokane do you mean a grande plié I’m sorry about spelling even tho I do ballet

    • @arabellat5133
      @arabellat5133 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      In Balanchine technique, they do that to emphasize weight being placed on the balls of feet for quick movement. But it’s definitely not universally accepted.

    • @academyofdance1284
      @academyofdance1284 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@arabellat5133 I see, thank you for that explanation. As a teacher, it's not an approach I would endorse as I don't think it even has the desired effect (based on personal observation).
      In my experience, lifting the heels in a demi-plié is often associated with lifting the heels to initiate a relevé or jump, which weakens the movement and increases strain on the Achilles. I also think it can be a cop-out for students with tighter calf muscles who need to spend more time stretching the soleus and strengthening the anterior tibialis.
      I think there are legitimate times to lift the heels briefly as a weight placement check - particularly when doing extended combinations on one foot on flat. (In my opinion, this is when students are most likely to sit on their heels anyway, not at the bottom of a demi-plié when the weight is already naturally shifting forward.) However, even this is subject to abuse, as students can develop the habit of letting their heels pop up unintentionally (I see this most often in grand battement). A good teacher should be able to structure combinations that challenge dancers' weight distribution (such as intermittently changing the supporting foot or rising to demi-pointe) without resorting to methods of execution that are neither technically nor anatomically sound.

    • @noopy99
      @noopy99 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting to know! And is there an explanation to why they close their legs not fully extended but slightly bend into fifth position again?

    • @AllieHutchins
      @AllieHutchins 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@academyofdance1284 if you watch them releve, particularly in
      Attitude you see a lot of struggling because they try to push off the ball. It's akin to doing a pushup on the same "ball" part of your hands.

    What school of dance teaches the heels to come off the floor in a demi plie? Even in pointe the heel stays down, especially during the beginning barre exercises.

    • @karennahall2590
      @karennahall2590 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      A lot of Balanchine schools train this way, even SAB. The concept was to allow the heels to come off the ground to get a larger stretch of the calves and deeper plié, but a lot of times it’s misinterpreted as a lift of the heel for no particular reason.

    • @kdub10009
      @kdub10009 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Karenna Hall in Balanchine training, if your tendons are short they encourage you to “release” the heels in order to get that beautiful “juicy” deep plié. It’s canon and has been for decades, not a misinterpretation.

    • @kdub10009
      @kdub10009 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since for some reason a lot of commenters here still seem to be confused about why lifting heels is permitted in Balanchine technique, while others are disputing its validity within authentic Balanchine pedagogy, I’ve uploaded this clip from Suki Schorer’s “Balanchine Essays,” featuring former NYCB principal Merrill Ashley, that explains it very clearly, straight from the experts. Both Suki and Merrill trained and worked directly with Balanchine, of course, so they know what they’re talking about. Note how Merrill, in purple leotard, picks her heels up in demi in the clip, which was filmed 25 years ago.

      @kdub10009 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matin Angel - former NYCB dancer Paul Boos on the topic of lifting heels in plié: “The heel controversy is something even Balanchine laughed at. We were in Berlin once and were doing grand plié in second position, and he start- ed yelling at us, “Leave your heels on the ground! Leave your heels on the ground!” And then he sort of chuckled and said under his breath, “But don’t tell anybody I told you that.”
      In truth, what he was looking for was lightness of movement. If you lose control of the heel, then you lose control of the step, and if you drop the heel to the floor, movement takes on a heavy quality. Balanchine wanted jumping to be buoyant. He wanted everything to be controlled. And he wanted the weight forward onto the balls of the feet, so that you had more control. I mean, he used to tell us, “Did you ever see cats put their heels down?” Well, their heels are halfway up their legs so there’s no way that they could put their heels down.
      But what he was saying was he wanted the weight forward on the balls of the foot because you have much more control that way, especially women on pointe, because if you land firmly on your heels, you must rock off them to get onto pointe. Whereas if your weight is already forward you’re already in the position and there’s no adjusting.The controversy comes from people saying that the method causes tendonitis, and it may in some people because it hasn’t been explained to them correctly.”
