Hey on those old WTEC Allison TCM’S there is a TCID number on the TCM. The new one you showed in the video has a TCID 3. Make sure the old TCM has the same TCID 3. Mismatched TCID’s can burn up clutches.
Drove these things for quite a few years before my unit got rid of them all of these military trucks have a TM manual that coincides with their model number and a lot of them can be found on line
Dude you have to keep the tractor trailer one what a unit to start pulling the race truck/mud truck and CUCV out to rip just pick up a drop deck trailer and be set.
Lift the cab up, If the regulator is flashing green on both leds chances are your regulator and alternator is working test it by hooking up your multimeter should around 14 volts running on one bolt and 26 or so on the other while running. Most likely the regulator is bad it’s a pretty common change. But the alternators have been known to go dead too.
@JH 8:18 in video is most likely leaking CTIS wheel seals, which in turn is leaking out of that dump valve. The whole alternator issue definetly sounds like a voltage regulator, another thing to watch for the alternator mounting bracket the top bolt on it tends to break a LOT. Keep an eye on that, may want to reinforce it a bit! Good luck JH!
You can find manuals for them pretty easy. I work on them in the military. It sounds like you have a dump valve leaking for the ctis. It should be right under the 5th wheel. The alternator will flash three colors. Red, orange and red. Red means it’s not charging and is running off battery power. Orange usually happens on Initial startup and green is when it’s producing 28 and 14 volts. If you need help I’m always willing to lend a hand.
I have a m1078 we use on the farm. Girlfriend buried it in the mud. Flat grassy field a little wet and was carrying a rock about 4000lbs. They look like they could go anywhere but can't. Still good overall trucks. With no load there light on the rearend. Have fun!
We have those same touch panels for the transmission on our freightliner rigs. Ive found several of our rigs had an issue with the touch panel completely dead and found a blown 10 amp fuse for the tcm control panel. Rubbed wiring at the firewall. Glad you got it working now. Love the videos JH !!
We have one of these, that TCM caused us trouble. We hade to replace it, not cheap! We disabled the tire pressure system, caused alot of issues. Good trucks!
Well just waiting for the shenanigans at the trails near the river or the mud park. But don't trash them just for the heck out. You always given thanks to your mechanics, not a lot of people do that. Thanks for sharing and here waiting for the next video.
get yourself a set of jumper cables that can plug truck to truck. Like the ones used to jump from the loader to the truck when it was picked up from auction.
On the charging system truck, check the battery load control box behind cab. Unplug the CTIS ECU . You can find parts and tm on the internet. If it ends in a 20 its the trouble shooting and maintenance 24p or 13p is parts
You do not have to use the switch down by the door to turn the power on to start it and to sut it off, just leave it in the on position. The switch up on the dash is the main power switch. Some models version have a switch under the cab when it is in the up position, you can start it up and turn it off
W-tech 3 are mostly paired with that 1088 and looks like the other one is a 1078. The charging issue is the voltage regulator. You may be lucky to just take it off and take it apart and just replace the regulator. Good trucks in all you may swap the engine if your want to put in a tune. We know that Cat can be a pain to deal with. The 5th wheel has a double lock on it. Pull the small pin then the handle to unlock.
Check the clearance lights on the cab. Clearance lights always leak. Those trucks are awesome. But the truck with the fifth wheel is the best out of the two. Just my opinion though.
One thing to mention about those trucks, They were not made for speed, they were made for power and torque. with curb weights between 17 and 24k, they are heavy.
If you push the mode button, the red light will come on and 6x6 is engaged. In 6x6 it starts out in 1st gear. In 4x6 it starts in 2nd . Try the burnout in the mud in 6x6 without trying to power brake. It usually works👍🏽
ive owned alot of these still have four a word of advise don't sell them and get a tow bar my current 5ton is 600hp and I converted it to a Allison md3560 and life is great when you can cruise 80mph in a 5ton on 53s but your trucks are SUPER clean good find lol I would have given you my CTIS another tip is carry a plug kit because when it quits it will leave you stranded happen to me twice
If it's anything like the air system on a tow truck it'll have a constant dump at the rear. I watch Ron Pratt with Midwest Truck out of southern Missouri (Scott City) and his big Peterbilt rotator/wrecker constantly has a leak sound when it's sitting and he said it's just a dump for the air ride/air brakes so it doesn't overpressure. You'd think it'd just kick off the pump once it reaches pressure but I guess those things don't work that way.
Ya need to keep your eye open for a cool military trailer of some-kind to go with your rig, look for something matching, rare and useful, I'm sure it's NBD, but I think Tim left that part out about breaking the headlight, I must now go give him a hard-time about said indiscretion, lol, great video, thanks for sharing.
The TCM is notorious for going out on those same with the CTS, also the leak usually comes from the gun turret hatch that bolts in the roof and the one's with the 3126 engines are the better one's.
Probably not the alternator but a battery balancing issue on the flatbed. It is a $30 solar balancer item on Amazon to try. So, who is the local guy helping trouble shoot and providing parts?
those Trucks are Styr 12M18 if you need something look up that name instead of FMTV althou they don't run the Styr engine or the ZF 9s manual Transmission they are basically the same.
I use to work on those trucks when I was in the army you can find the manuals for it are all online and easy to get.... If you have any questions about it just give me a shout out I know them by the back hand my on hand.....
I really hope you do some big things with at least one of these awesome rigs I love the look of these ones I don’t like the ones that you see at the truck pulls with the big hood
I'm waaaaay up north in canuckistan, your army trucks are pretty rare up here, I think it is lack of availability, I dont think we can even buy Canadian army trucks, which are mostly us army trucks any way i think lol. me want, would have been better if one or both had a picker. ya not built for comfort but can do stuff no comfortable truck can, any how thanks for the vid, hope to see more.
Hi I worked on them in,Germany and had 1 that gauges, and charging was crazy, I found it,was the ctis causing the problem. I just disconnected and everything went OK. When itis running have a look at the lights on the alternator they should be green if red then you have a problem.
Pretty easy to work on, I want to see you diagnose tore up wires on that thing all of the wires are the same color. How would you do that with all of the wires the same color
I think the one with the flatbed would be a good tug-o-war truck...a couple of 1000 gallon square tanks in the back full of water an you'd be draggin asses at The Barn next event..
In your original video, when you had these two trucks delivered, you said that a background check was needed before you could take possession? Could you please explain? Or did I perhaps not understand or hear correctly?
Buying from the government requires navigating a fair amount of red tape. There's a whole process that basically makes sure you're not going to use it for anything the government doesn't approve of. Takes about six months all told.

Also if you hit mode on the shift selector it locks the transfer case.
since they have air tanks and a compressor, can you retrofit them with a turret mounted t-shirt launcher, for cleetus events?

I bought an LMTV 1093A1 earlier this year and now plan to watch your channel to get ideas and help from. Absolutely love my 5 tonner. Enjoy yours!
I like the truck with the alternator problem, so many cool things could be done with the bed on it

I remember when we first started getting these trucks in the Army. We had several that had issues with shifting.
We have one of these, that TCM caused us trouble. We hade to replace it, not cheap! We disabled the tire pressure system, caused alot of issues. Good trucks!
We still had Vietnam era M35s when I got out (active units had LMTVs). The more I see these trucks, the more I want one.
With the alternator, have you pulled the rectifier block and checked the brushes. Replace the brushes and the problem should go. Just worn brushes.
You can download a PDF repair manual online.
I live near by you and would love to stop. By and take a look at your operation. Your videos are awesome keep them coming.
Get some 7” LED’s for in the headlights!… you’ll love them!

On the charging system truck, check the battery load control box behind cab. Unplug the CTIS ECU . You can find parts and tm on the internet. If it ends in a 20 its the trouble shooting and maintenance 24p or 13p is parts
If the generator and voltage regulator work

Yeh but then he doesn't get to do a cool start-up sequence like Furiosa in Mad Max.
Build a camper on it but leave enough room at the back for a gooseneck hitch make it a badass 6 wheel drive toterhome
I’m stoked for you, that was a beautiful site seeing you headed down the road in that beast, can’t wait to see what you get into with them

Saw my truck in the background at the shop! So awesome! Cant wait to hear her run.

Had a few ex Aussie military trucks in civilian use and they are built Tough!
Love em and they will love you right back
Those Stewart-Stevensons are built down in Texas. I would think you ought to be able to get a shop manual from them.
The cargo bed model would make an excellent off road service/light recovery truck.
When I was in we could take a wadded up paper towel and duct tape and cover the beeping thing to make it bearable to start a truck.
One thing to mention about those trucks, They were not made for speed, they were made for power and torque. with curb weights between 17 and 24k, they are heavy.
That low pressure beep is on your dash and you can cover it with your hand while waiting for it to increase pressure
My money is on Garret buying one.
He'll rock up in a hemtt or some shit 😂
Just what i was thinking 🤣 and they'll do something crazy with them for sure😂
Whistlin diesel needs one of these.

Hope you make the one your new tow rig!!! Get a big trailer for it to tow your trucks to events!
I need one of those with a big snow plow on the front, for winter up here in Washington state.
Awesome trucks, would love to go for a rip in one of them.

What happen to the maintenance book?
I know that when we work on these vehicles in the shop, they came with a detailed booklet to work on them.
But to really test if that is an issue you got to put the 'bad' part in the other, as sometimes it still works.
These trucks are beast! Which I had one! Awesome purchase
Also put some tape over that speaker on the dash. Hate how loud them are
Time to load one of them up and head to iron horse mud ranch.
ill see you there.

awesome job on the trucks
They go nuts with their camo paint but it always looks good closed up , those things are cool AF, I’dlove to have one in. The Pocono’s
