I think there's a difference between a mentor dog and a helper dog. A mentor dog shows other dogs how to behave. A helper dog helps other dogs get over their issues. Stonnie Dennis has a mentor dog, you have a helper.

I would ask Joel: Did you have dogs when you were a child, when you were growing up ? if so, what types of dogs were they ? I think one's childhood experiences with dogs informs how one lives with and trains dogs now.

I love everything you said about how you trust the process and the dog earns its way there. You’re like the equivalent of a good horseman but with dogs. You go step-by-step, you give them as long as they need before rushing to the next thing. You don’t skip things or leave holes in your training. To me, that’s what “earning“ their way there means. They have to prove themselves first

    • @jenn_2281
      @jenn_2281 ปีที่แล้ว

Lol, funny you said he's like a good horseman. I watch another channel 'Steve Young Horsemanship' and I keep thinking how similar they are in their methods. I watched one where Steve let the horse hit the end of the lead rope to teach it that it has it's limit.

This was great, thanks! Love the behind the scenes, more personal type stuff, great to see your family and your other trainers too. I think a collab would be great to see just because it would get more people exposed to your channel. I personally feel your channel is better because it actually teaches people clearly how to train their dogs. To me Zac and Cesar aren't as easy to learn from on their TH-cam videos.

I agree with another poster, I don't think Caesar is the goat. That poster is correct, I'll add I've seen multiple different times he gets bit.
But the real issue for me, is I don't think he can train people, and that's the point. You never tell people vague stuff about their "energy." Instead you tell them to make their voice more "poppy" and you demonstrate that and talk about where to put the inflection. That's real training.

Thank you for posting your videos. I don't own a dog, I like dogs but I'm little scared of dogs. Yet I watch all your videos and other dog trainers to identify behavioural patterns. I have a 3 year old little one and I often draw parallels between training dogs and raising kids. To name a few, you can't train a dog when it's highly stimulated like you can't teach a kid if they are cranked up. Reinforce good behavior when dogs are calm to appreciating kids by identifying the better choice they make when normal and encouraging to make the right choice in conflict.

Love the video, really good questions and I would love to see the collab with Ceasar. I just had my dog at my friends house with their dogs and like I've said before he just keeps getting better every time he's around other dogs. My friend was able to walk outside the house with him off leash and not have him run and then when I brought him home he slipped his collar off but this was the first time he hasn't just bolted away. I would love to have the chance for my dog to be trained by you but its also so satisfying to follow along your video and do the training myself and see progress every day.

This was great! Love seeing other staff and family. I also wanted to point out your response to "shock" collars. I thought it was a very fair, respectful, and justified response. You own your own methods but aren't opposed to a tool being used for a specific dog that may benefit from it. I commend the fact that you would refer the client to another trainer rather than shutting down the tool altogether. There needs to be more referrals in the dog training industry instead of bashing techniques. It's unfortunate the industry is coming to such a discord. Love your content and love the "balance" you offer to dogs and training.

Season's Greetings Joel and Company. I have a Red Heeler mix that I got from a shelter. They were not to sure about her history. I recently thought I saw a title if one of your videos about a reactive Red Heeler mix that was kept in a barn for three months. I can't find the video. Now J question if this was from your site. She is extremely reactive and as a result not very socialized. My progress with her is very slow. And we do have setbacks. How would you proceed with a pip like her? Would she be the kind of dog that could be introduced to your pack? Thanks.

I think a mentor dog and helper dog is a bit different. Although the uses could be similar, too.
I have a dog that is friendly, confident and gentle. He can be dominant when he needs to be. And he is a great mentor dog. He makes other dogs around feel welcomed and try to explore. His obedience is not as polished, but I need him to be just 'the cool guy'. He has very good instincts and I can tell the vibe of other dogs from him.
And I have my female helper that is not the most social, but sharp in obedience. And she can be the dog that just stands there as a decoy or help me test dogs that get more triggered. She can be chilled around dogs, but she is for sure more serious in her job.

I have two dogs and a large yard and some of the neighbors complained about the noise and recommend me to use a shock collar to reduce barking. I am trying to call off my dogs when they barking on passing by people or cars . But whould like to know your opinion better addressing this issue.

I just love that you can solve things without the use of a prong collar and/or a shock collar, "e-collar". Your videos are so much better than Cesar's, they are straight up, to the point, not a lot of fluff, follow through so the average pet owner can follow and implement the processes. In addition, Cesar has way too many dog fights on tape. You are always paying attention, even when video taping an episode. You're on top of all the dogs in your care and prevent things from happening. ABC should be sending more people to you rather than Davis who's revert to mode is almost always a prong collar. Most people don't want to use a prong collar. We get a lot of older people who can't even get the collar on because of arthritis and they just want to walk their dog. I do wish you or your staff could organize the videos to refer to when watching the one you're working on - especially the Rottweiler episode that is like a go to video for the loose leash walking method you are famous for. Would also add the puppy and small dog videos in all the loose leash videos so people have their dog/age group right on one episode so they don't have to search on their own and possibly get lost or check out someone else's videos. Check out the drop down menus on Susan Garrett's podcasts. Not only does she reference the episode she refers to on the podcast, it's also listed in the drop down menu - just makes things easier especially when you want all the information on that subject. Love and refer your episodes to all our students - thank you so much!

I agree Joel does a great job of teaching people on video. In fairness, I think Davis is an excellent teacher of people as well. He does use a slip leash a lot as well. Anyway, this is Joel’s channel and I came here to learn the training on a flat collar and also the gentle leader ended up helping as well. I couldn’t learn off of Caesar’s videos at all, except to make that ‘shush’ noise he is famous for . I think you’re right, Joel’s methods work, take practice, and seem possible for most people to apply.

Just to add.. that basic training sit, stay, lay down etc is good and is 90% spot on, recall is 80% and working daily with him. He know who is boss, great with my young kids it’s just the reactivity that his problem. We tried a gentle leader which we will use (he hates it) if we cannot correct his behaviour with a collar alone. Thanks again

Stonie, whose personality is the exact opposite of Joel’s, seems to be the most laid back trainer on TH-cam. In the four personality types, Joel is obviously a thinker, especially under stressful conditions. Michael Cabral seems to be a big favorite with the ladies, so I guess he’s the best looking? Well, he is a handsome dude. Looks like a gun fighter from the old west. Would like to see a podcast and discussion with all these guys, along with the GOAT.

I think you mean Robert Cabral? I follow him as well, he's a Malinois guy with a definite trend toward protection work. I've also found Fenrir to be pretty good. Recently found say it once dog training (Vincent Somma) who's also good in my opinion. Don't like any of them as much as Beckman's.... also just made me think where the excellent balanced female dog trainers are? Maybe it's time to shine the spotlight on Liz and Carly a bit so we can see their techniques too 😀❤

A "collaboration" with another dog trainer is a bad idea. Dog training, as we see in Joel's videos, requires a particular finesse, skill, and creativity -- a unique, individual creativity which would be shattered by the intrusion of attempted collaboration -- just as attempts at collaboration often hinder the success of other creative endeavors.

@M B, I agree with you. Joel just needs to be him and do his thing. I don't see a “collaboration” going the way people think it would go. I don't see him being interested in or doing something like that either. Just an opinion, of course.

Collaboration doesn't always have to mean working together.
You should check out Robert Cabral's Channel for a good example. He does a lot of collaborations with different kinds of dog professionals, and all they do is chat about what the collab guy does. It's very educational, and gives us opportunities to get to know fields of dog handling that otherwise we would never have known. My personal favourite so far was the collab with an ex-K9 officer Chief, who explained how they used separate kinds of dogs to track (hound dogs) and to attack (German Shepherds etc) criminals. I never knew they did that kind of thing! The collabs he does with older guys are usually funny because they talk about "back in the day we didn't have all these fancy gadgets" etc. LOL

Hey Joel, I have no idea if you will catch a reply to a 7 month old video but in case you or your staff do, in regards to the book you are looking for, I would recommend posting that picture of the page in the video, or linking an image if their are copyright issues, in one of your videos. With the power of the internet and really smart people looking around in this day and age, I bet someone watching will take it as a mission to find that book and would probably post a comment about it, if you are still trying to find out what book that is.

I really want to know now how training exotic animals and killer whales differ from dog training, especially because whales are so big and just exist in a different element than us. Crazy someone even thought it would be possible.

A little hint… you may want to have a second look at your thumbnail graphic for this video ..
Just wanted to gently draw your attention to that so whoever does your graphic overlays can change that for you;)

I've tried ur puppy nipping strategy of the lip thing but it doesn't work. It frustrates him.. I tried chew toys and he's 12 weeks old... By when will the nipping stop

Also teach him when he hurts you, you gotta do a high pitch like his litter mates would. He will understand straight away, and he might start nipping softer and then harder, bc they want to check when it hurts. They gotta learn and they want to learn it. It's called bite inhibition if you want to google it some more.

Nah, I learned from you and my dog became much more manageable within a couple of days.
What I need now is how to promote behavior. You've taught how to stop unwanted behavior or activity, but I don't see you teaching how to encourage new actions.

Is there any hope for a great dog when your spouse is lax on what you want the rules for the dog to be? Example jumping. 98% of the time they don't jump on me cause they know they're not supposed to. But my husband usually lets them jump on him. If guest are over they won't say anything about the jumping either but I can tell they would rather them not jump. But if my husband doesn't enforce "my" rules also then can I really get mad at the dog when they don't always listen to me when other people are around as well?
Also what's the best way to socialize dogs when your neighbor's aren't friendly with you, and your spouse grew up where your dog was outside in the back yard and "you don't take your dog with you every time you go somewhere".
When the time comes after our dogs now pass. I'm more concerned about a repeat in the "double standard" of rules than I am the actual care and training of the dog itself. Because I want a "good" dog, but this idea and mine aren't the same.
