Stock Footage, NOT FOR BROADCAST. FOOTAGE COPYRIGHTED BY BNVN.com Footage of the winter storm that hit the Minneapolis Minnesota area on March 31st 2008. Video of a car spinning out right in front of the dash camera and going into the ditch. Video of cars fish tailing and cars in the ditch. Also snow plow footage.
This is what happened when Burger King Stopped Selling The Whopper.

Me,too. Impalas are good cars in the winter. I haven't had problems and I live in an area that gets huge amounts of snow. Just got to be careful. Having a nice set of Bridgestone Blizzaks doesn't hurt.
This is the reason that it's illegal to drive WITHOUT studded tires in Finland. Although, when the road is slippery due to excess snow, studs don't really help much. But, that's why it takes years to get driver's licenses here. I've had my license for a year and I can tailslide on the highway without any problems. (I drive a Peugeot 406 if anyone is wondering)
Most of the cars in this video, including the one the camera was in, were following too closely. The rule of thumb is, if the vehicle in front of you went to an instant dead stop, you should be able to stop before hitting it. In snow/ice, that means the 2-second rule for cars generally becomes 6-8 seconds. The 6-second rule for big trucks becomes 18-20 seconds.
at 1:03 when the guy starts to fish tail he handled that very well didnt over steer and was able to get it back under controls thats a good driver
Fancy a winter break. Minnesota offers fun for all the family
There was a mess like this on I-696 in southeastern Michigan a few weeks ago. I counted at least 20 wrecks on both sides of the road and I was only on it for a relatively short time.
i do the same thing.with todays cars its best to ditch it ass end first so you dont break the radiator. its also good to know your car. we have a old air force runway they test cars on. we go out there early in the snow season before they open and play all the time. theres nothing like spinning a car out at 70mph just to see if you can pull out of it.
I once started fishtailing on a dirt road and very nearly lost my life, the only thing that i remembered was - look where you want to go (ie down the road) not into the trees/hard objects!
I was in Minnesota this winter. Surprisingly there were many cars with summer or all season tires. Here in Scandinavia we have a lot of snow too, but winter tires are compulsory and many use winter studded tires. This helps on slippery roads.
Just wanted to say the shot out the window looking back at the plow (towards the end of the vid) is a really, really nice shot. :)
When we got our big snow storm here in Southern California last December 08 the freeways were littered with cars. It literally looked like armageddon had just passed and all that remained was destruction. There were tow trucks, hummers, cars all over the freeway. We barely get any rain, let alone over a ft. of snow, lol needless to say most were unprepared. including me.
the driver just after first minute of the video was a really good one, you should notice he DID NOT use breaks after his car started fishtailing! Remember - breaks kill in such situation. FWD cars have to be stabilised with the throttle and here you have a great example! Hope it's a FWD ;) Cheers!
were some winters in Norway: we drove quite fast most of the time (studded tires are normal in norwegian winter time), just few times we drifted unintended over rotary traffic ( = roundabout?)
And when a car slides off the road the other drivers stop and help immediately
i love how much snow the second car had on it while it started fishtailing
I live in MN, have snow tires, and wonder why people in this state still think they are worthless.
Come to a Glacier Lakes Quattro club, Ice driving event. Bring your best All seasons, and see how quicly (and safely) you can navigate a 1.5 mile track plowed on an Icy lake. You can also learn some valuable driving skills that can save your life, or anyone in your car in slippery situations.
That was awesome! The spinout shows exactly how people go off the road, but when your tail goes out like that, you press on the gas while trying to straighten out, slowing down actually amplifies the spin...But at least he\she didn't jam on the brakes to make it worse... Someone did the same thing in front of me during a similar storm but was going from one side of the highway to the other, i couldn't wait for him\her to stop because my empty low-boy was just sliding...
@3DPeter
Studded tires are tires with metal studs in them or metal (spikes) which dig into the ice and grip.
yup wont miss those minnesota winters. i remember that storm it was awesome. I was able to drive my snowmobile through downtown and cops couldnt get traction to do anything
I hope the county road commissions here in SE Lower Michigan remember to buy enough salt to handle whatever winter throws at us this year. Last winter really sucked.
I did !!! Its Great Fun!! 11 Revolutions I Did Before a Halt on the Mud!!! it Was My 3rd time Lucky! Hard Trying to get an 4x4 to spin
That second driver in the black car did a good job trying to control the car. Personally, I would have started freaking out immediately.
Great video. Seeing this kind of thing makes me grateful I'm in So. California. I've never had to drive in the snow and after seeing this clip I hope I never have to!
@ssj02 yep. Im in Onterrible which is in Canada, so I have to drive through the big border fortress where they check your tires and even search your car if they so wish.
If you have studs they tell you to turn around and go back.
the car at 1.05 should drive on the snow instead of the black tracks, because the black stuff is squased snow that turned into ice, while the fresh snow next to the black tracks gives a bit of more grip.
@NorthwesternNL Ok, yeah, i'll give you the fact that it's FWD. It makes it a bit easier, but not nearly as easy as some people think. And yes, you got my point exactly, we have to do a hell of a lot of training on very bad roads. (Also, i'm kinda impressed by those Beamer skills. My friend drives a similar one and I know from experience how much it tends to skid around.)
Makes me miss my rwd Ranger. I used to powerslide in the snow. My fwd Saturn is gonna be so boring. At least I still have my Jeep. Fun and safe if it gets crazy!
thank you chrisbrowner; im sick of people thinking they're invincible in their SUV's, Trucks, or even Sedans.. the answer is to just slow down.
snow and winter driving are a Canadian specialty
@zorgpower Yup, the road really only cares about the tires. Weight, weight distribution, drive, etc. to factor in, but it is mostly tires that keep you under control.
MN only allows studs if you are from out of state and if you are from a state that allows studs, and even then there are restrictions.
The new studless snow & ice tires do kick ass, tho. And in some states that require studs, they can qualify as a legally adequate substitute.
Gotta love fish-tailing in the good ol MN Winters!
Note: never use breaks hard in snow like this and when spinning out dont use the breaks
@jumar1281 actually I didn't see any roads damaged by studded tires in Norway, and there almost every vehicle (car, bus or truck) has studded tires in winter
driver in the impala know how to drive really good wish more people on the road could drive like that.
The accumulation of snow & slush between the lanes put unequal drag on that side of the car and he couldn't recover on the icey surface.
one thing is to avoid the center of the lane...you hit that and you get more friction on one side causing you to do what the second car did...and sort of what the first did.
That sounded like Mark Levin at the very beginning. Good video.
props for the guy in the black malibu really hard to get out of something like that
When it's that slick, don't change lanes on a curve. I've been driving MN winters since 1976 and I've never been in the ditch.
Good driving at 1:01 that driver knows how to drive and not slam on the brakes. Good save!!
lol i live in minnesota. :P i love it when our car slides but nothing ever bad happens! at 0:20 something similar to that happend but it was an SUV with a mom, dad, two kids. theyre car rolled down a downfall hill..i hope theyre okay.
when you start to fishtail like at 1:01, do NOT hit the breaks. just try to steer out of it. there is no real way to make it short and painless.
I was there too, but I don't remember it. This is just a normal winter day's snowfall where I grew up in upstate New York.
very good driver at 1:00 almost didnt hit the brakes
That driver between 1:01 and 1:28 handled it quite well.
omg I get anxiety every time I go over that bridge! That guy is sooooo lucky he spun out after the point of the river, and went into the grass rather than right in the middle of traffic! :D
I live in Minneapolis and saw a lot of stuff like that again today, I can only wonder whats gonna happen come monday morning.
The road conditions are terrible yet people seem unaware the speeds they are going.
i feel for the firebird at 1:50. I drove a firebird in iowa winters for 2 years. Not easy. Its the reason i now own a 4x4
Ok cool, i don't know why it is like that. I think it's very rare too that i don't see too many vans nowdays.
Been in there (exact storm) done that! LOL, just shows us minnesotans are crazy enough to drive in anything ! :)
lol we just had a pretty badass snowstorm up here in Montreal and I saw tons of those on the road... pretty slippery
i have to use large parking lots around here for that but no doubt its a good thing to do. i feel drivers ed needs to include a defensive driving course with these kinds of maneuvers. my dodge ram has a 400Lbs grill guard and 12K Lbs winch on her so i try an position myself so i can winch out if needed but normally my 37" tires and diff lockers are enough to pull me through. having the right vehicle for the conditions makes a world of difference.
Dont hit the brakes if there's nothing infront of you! Let off the gas and just let it coast and slow down and as small of corrections as possible until you get traction again, if need be try and guide the car into the shoulder if there is snow to help you regain your traction and DONT PANIC!
Why are studded tires illegal in Minnisota?
I live 20 minutes from the border and I am not allowed to cross into that state during the winter because I run studs...
I can't tell if the guy who recovered from the near spin-out with, or with without the electronic stability control system. . . Any ideas?
he did a good job on stopping from sliding too much :)
So that was smart. Trying to switch like 2 lanes around a curve on a snowy/icy road...
any time im driving in weather like this im always thinking and looking for the best place to go if i need to stop or go around someone. the best sign to use as an aid in slowing down, the best curb i can grind along, guard rail i can bounce off of or just what ditch i can drive into and at what angle to help me stop and not roll over. by watching these videos i feel like im the only person who does this
I know I have seen a plow here in NY fly off the road and flip a few times... Also saw a plow slam into a parked car and fling it about 30 feet, that was pretty cool
i live on top of the world(North of edmonton...alberta) but i guess we did get 2 feet in may last year...it was a fun couple days tell it melted.
amazing how my generation at 60 years old went EVERYWHERE we needed to years ago with 6 cylinders-- rear drive--bias tires 3 speeds on the column and the ability to actually drive----NO ONE had 4wd and all I see in the ditches now are 4wd idiots
True bud
I blame an over abundance of safety regulations put in place since that time personally. For some reason we try very hard to keep stupid people alive.
I have driven in the worst imaginable conditions all over the planet over 5 decades without a single incident. The only times I came close was because another driver effed up. I was always alert enough to avoid disaster. Pay attention to road signs, drive defensively and SLOW DOWN.
looks like fun..
we should try out the high ways
with sleds they look very slippery and
FUN!! (:
NICE SAVE I hate the friking snow
shows the importance of special "snow tires" and cautious driving
i havent found any good footage really on youtube, i was telling a friend about an experience moving someone from edmonton to medicine hat and highway 2(?) was like a "car graveyard" couldnt find any footage anything like that, you should take a spin this weekend and get some when it gets bad on the highway to calgary again and show these americans how easy they really have it.
i have a 2001 impala and they are very light in the ass end. i put two 50lb sand bags in the trunk and it holds the road good even in this slush.
I think Stability control (ESC/ ESP) really saved that Impala at 1:05
Ok I understand that
I live in finland and here is the summit, what oblige to use winter tyres November to March and if police will notice u dont use winter tyres you will get a big penalty of traffic safety's compromise and maybe police take ur driver's licence.. winter speedlimit is on highway 80km/h wich is umm... ~53mp/h normal it is 100km/h
Usually here is winter October to May and when it's May, it will starts to be so sleet etc. (I don't speak english very well so hope you understand)
i like the silverrado ,i just looked on there web site ,i do like the big one with the two wheels on the back , i never see any vans in the u.s does everyone just use pickups for building work?
Good Vid! People drivin in the snow like its summer time...sheesh!
Smow storm a day ago and only saw 1 car stuck the 15 miles i drove that day. GO 16 inches! WOOHOO
I remember the first (and only) time I went to canada, i was amazed at how on the highway on these snowy roads, ever few hundred meters there was car facing the wrong way or against a barrier or something, obviously having spun out on ice. You would think the canadians would be used to it by now!
blizzards are fine, tornadoes and hurricanes are wut scares me
Nice video, and good radio station in the beginning as well. ;-)
Snow tires don't make you invincible. Alot of these accidents result in people who think they are because they have snow tires.
from 1:01 that im calling driving skills, respect to him
Are their car 4WD & snow tire?
I have this experience.I think stability driving on snow is front / rear tire weighting balance.
nice dirving/save by the car at 1:05
You can see he's not constantly braking. That's why he managed to keep control. It's a good example. :)
Yay! New BNVN footage!
Now that guy in the black sedan was just showing off.
I live in MN, i know what winter driving is all about!
That second person was just trying to get the snow off their car!
figures it would be a camaro at 1:49 haha.. i love the snow
1:10 that driver was very good.
www.kfor.com
I noticed that the first two cars were chevy impalas. I use to have one and it was a shitty car. It fished tail at 30 miles in snow or ice because of crappy craftsmen ship with the rear suspension.
generally they responsibly drive slower and in packs if i remember. also equipped with actual snow tires and all
RWD or FWD, all you need is good winter tires, and of course good driving skills. That's it
First and foremost get real snow tires and like many have pointed out stay off your brakes and if you do get into trouble put your car in neutral or push in the clutch don’t let the cars engine push you along even more
Come to montana guys, its shit loads icier that there
Dude in the black Impala is "sawing" the wheel - over correcting.
Doesn't look like harsh conditions. Don't they have winter tyres?
@Clipperwood3 LOL, and with the settlement he'll be able to make the pop-up headlights function for a while.
@bnvn1 actually he probably could still use it. Copyright is a bit of a misnomer its copy privilege and its not "total" - we have this wee little thing called "fair use"
it seems though the main point of the CR notice was for no rebroadcast IE other news stations using the footage. IE a sensible precaution.
Good video btw.
These provide a good opportunity to learn from the mistakes of others. TH-cam would be doing Northern Hemisphere folk a safety favour if they actively promoted these videos at the commencement of every snow season.
the impala kept over-correcting (the black one) that was its problem.
You can tell the driver was going too fast for the road conditions and tried to change lanes to pass the cars in front on him/her.
lol the guy at 1:06-1:20 wasnt fishtailing he was just cleaning off his back window :)
black impala had a nice save
OMG!!! 1:05 - 1:18
Man, OWNED!!!
