    16 years later and I am still trying to figure out for what action during this match Tedeev would have been granted the points to be able to protest in the first place.

    Kolat would've had his 3rd point at 6:56 in the video with that front headlock. I see no reason for the stoppage except to try to keep Tedeev in the match. Despite a bad call there, Kolat still won decisively. I know that international wrestling can be political, but overturning Kolat's win is unbelievable.

    The biggest problem is that there is no incentive to escape from the bottom in freestyle. You are better off stalling on the bottom than trying to escape and risk back points. The push out rule in freestyle is a welcome change though, fleeing the mat was far too common before and it almost made taking shots not even worth it.

    I can't recall, even one time, when Kolat lost, that it was NOT due to wind. Not saying he had no wind, saying at the highest levels, Dan Gable type wind--wins the day. First time I saw Kolat lose, was to "Ironside" (with Dan Gable as coach). I would say Kolat was "better" but the last thirty seconds of the match, Kolat was done, exhausted. With a tie score, Ironside let Kolat up for an escape, totally confident he could take him down, and why? Because he knew Kolat was exhausted and that he was not anywhere near exhaustion. Talent wise, I have never seen anyone as good as Kolat--no one. In his prime, he could stamp on his forehead that he was coming for your legs--and there would not be a damn thing you could do about it, that's how fast he was. And remember he was already at that world level--in high school. Unheard of before or since to my knowledge.

    You can't be too offensive if you want to win Olympic medals? I think John Smith and Jordan Burroughs would disagree.

  • @IrishxCarey

    All we want to do is to add folkstyle. We don't want to take out any of the other styles. How we train for freestyle and greco roman in America could be how the rest of the world trains for folkstyle. It doesn't mean everyone has to do folkstyle.

  • @three69maphia

  • @mikelovestacos
    @mikelovestacos 12 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why should the entire world change the wrestling style that has been used for years? Folk style is American, it's our fault for the odd transition American wrestlers have into freestyle. There would be no transition issues if we just wrestled freestyle!

    • @JASONCFFC
      @JASONCFFC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. While everyone else starts freestyle and greco at a young age, our high level guys don't transition until after college at 22-23 year old. The other people have been doing only those styles since they can walk and now we have to try to catch up. Of course a take down is a take down, but in folkstyle we aren't worried about a tilt while we are scoring. I remember seeing guys going for a take down in freestyle and getting tilted 3-4 times and not even knowing they were giving up points.

    Well, far be it for me to disagree with a man of his talent, but I'd say that his career went downhill as he backed off the throttle. Kolat in the 1990's was the most aggressive wrestler I have ever seen and he was inches away from a world title. Beyond the year 2000, he wasn't nearly as offensive and didn't place at worlds ever again. I don't think the amount of offense was his problem. I just think he was really good at a lot of moves, but not elite at any.
