  • Wondering about food selectivity and autism? Verbal Beginnings Feeding Director, Ben Sarcia, speaks about making progress with feeding therapy.
Feeding Therapy practices are validated by research and work to identify the function of the behaviors causing the feeding difficulties. Feeding issue are common with many kids with developmental delays and kids who are considered to be typically developing.
It's important to know whether kids are eating a good variety of foods, eating an appropriate volume, using utensils, and engaging in appropriate mealtime behavior.
This video also highlights the importance of family training. Involving the family and making sure practices are standardized helps reinforce the therapy.
Verbal Beginnings provides the guidance families need to help mealtimes be less frustrating. To learn more about feeding services at Verbal Beginnings check out our website: www.verbalbegi...

I definitely need this type of therapy for my baby. He doesn't each certain textures. He only likes crunchy foods.

Sensory issues and food aversion issues are not uncommon with preemies, as the sensory system is one of the last developments in the womb. My daughter was born almost 2 months early weighing 4 lbs. She was a late sitter, skipping crawling and late walker. She has also struggled with food. She’s now 6 and I’m still struggling with her. She’s come a long way, but still has a lot of work ahead of her. Also, the limited diet affects her digestion and the digestion issues made her a very late potty trainer. My advice is get help as early as possible. Go to a pediatrician who is familiar with these issues and can refer the right type of therapy for your child.

My daughter is now 7 and it’s a struggle, she was also a preemie, but 5 almost 6 weeks early. 4 lb 15 oz, she walked late, met all her other milestones in a timely manner. 14 months is when she really started walking though.

How about a child who has such an extreme oral aversion he doesnt eat at all. My son is 100% grube fed. As a baby he did eat baby food and puffs and was willing to try foods. But he could never eat enough to gain. So we supplemented with gtube feeds. Then we were sent to feeding therapy. And the therapist , who we trusted, did all sorts of things to "desensitize " his aversion. Which at the time i dont think he had. She would shove things in his mouth that vibrated and sour lemon swabs and he wpuld cry through all of.it but she assured us this was necessary. Aftet a year he refused anything near his mouth and would gag even watching us eat. Hes 8 now and im so desperate to get him eating. Hes on the spectrum, mostly non verbal. No one around here does feeding therapy.
