Hey guys, as a geologist I thought I’d add to the peat conversation ( although I’m logged on as my gf at present). Peat is decayed organic plant material, typically deposited in terrestrial (on land) environments, in boggy/ lowland areas, as you note. It is the first stage to coal, and if it does become coal (through burial, compression, and a lot of time), it can become compressed by up to 100x what it was as peat. Peat typically is found in 2 main forms : amorphous and fibrous, which basically denotes how broken down the material is. Amorphous generally has no to minimal recognizable organic materials individually present, and forms a black clay . This is typically what is used for peat smoking. The amount present as earths surface is not likely to be the amount you note, probably far less, however there is quite a bit at depth. The moisture content can vary wildly in it and I suspect this impacts on the flavour also. It can often get deposited in marine transgression environments as well so is often associated with sand from the beach, basically. All effecting flavour no doubt. So there you have it, some information you probably didn’t need.

My takeaway from this episode is that I need to enjoy as much Islay whisky as possible before the peat runs out.

Clynelich is easily one of the best Highland Single Malts I've ever tasted. Very rich and complex whisky with a super nice waxy and oily resinous mouthfeel. You wouldn't get it on the nose necessarily, but when you taste it it packs a nice spicy punch that's at once friendly and yet a bit aggressive. Not the best of the single malts to start off with, but an excellent one for those who've aquired a taste for them.

This is a good description of it. I think what I enjoy most about this over something like Glen Moray (I tend to prefer Speysides) is that it does have that pepper-y bloom later in the palate, but it's exactly that, a *bloom*. You get this lovely, complex scotch in the forepalate that starts to bloom and expand with spice as it hits the back of your tongue and then subsides into this really nice tingle that sets you up well for a second sip.

This has taken over as my daily dram. Damnit, it's so complex and amazing for the price. No one buy it. Keep the price down. Don't you dare get into this, Nick Offerman.

I would add that I am very new to Scotch and whiskey in general and greatly appreciate Daniel and Rex (yes, in that order, we nerds rule, lol) as well as Ralphy and other TH-cam reviewers for their insights. I certainly can’t taste a tenth of all the flavors that these guys can bring out of a single dram but I do enjoy the experience nevertheless. Thank you guys!!!

Most of the peatland is situated in Russia, Canada, Indonesia and the USA. However, the main producers and users of peat are Finland, Belarus, Estonia, Ireland, Indonesia, Sweden and the Russian Federation.

Thanks for this brilliant video! I have got a question, please. I am seeing on the internet 2 different labels (bottlings) for Clynelish 14, Old and New bottlings. Are they the same whisky just different labels and bottling or utterly different whiskies? Cheers!

Tried Clynelish 14 for the first time this weekend. Amazing scotch! It was medicinalon the nose With no smoke that I could detect. The flavor was alternating between sweet, tart and a little bitter, the finish was very long and damn delicious. It’s a part of a “Coastal Scotch” sampler of 3 200ml bottles with 2 other bottles being Talisker 10 and Caol Ila 12. I think I liked Talisker the most. With Clyneslish a close second. And so true about the smoke difference - both Talisker and Caol Ila smell pretty smokey but each in its own unique way.

Add some water (not much) and it's just wonderfull! Also for 47eu a bottle one off the cheapest 14y Olds but damn good. Actually one off my favorite. And you can poor a double one without feeling guilty (if I do it with a 400eu bottle I feel guilty after I drank a double whisky) well not guilty but you know what I mean I hope

This conversation is great and interesting, but I can't help but associate it with the ancient Bog People that they've discovered in peat bogs. Which is a bit disheartening. Better drink some whiskey and mull this one over.

Sorry - just saw this now. To the blending comment - I was told that Clynelish was the base for JW Gold, Just as Lagavulin 16 was the base for JW Blue. Not sure if it's true, but I do remember when Clynelish 14 came out it was cheap (like $38) and often sold at duty free shops in airports. No one seemed to know what it was. It was pretty great at $38.
