The reduction gear should be one piece machined hardened steel. Honda is going down the drain in quality with there new stuff being made in Taiwan and China.

Its done that way so it doesn't dammage the motor from kick back. Kick back can brake the cases or the starter. No throttle when starting. Alsos the gears at the one way clutch thad it rides on and against need to be replaced when doing the 1 way they are where items.

@@HanSolo-yd2pf You are absolutely correct. I much rather replace the press fit gears than the cases or the starter. And worse that having to replace the cases is getting stuck in the middle of nowhere with a bike you can't ride at all. The original CRF450X had a problem with kick back when starting. In 2008 Honda went with a new design on the decompression mechanism on the cam shaft and now they start much easier with very little kickback.

*** HONDA JUST RELEASED A BULLETIN *** Like many others I just experienced this problem a few weeks ago. I have a 2020 CRF450X with ONLY 100 miles. Bike pretty much left me stranded would not start, long story took it to Honda dealership. They quoted me over $700 because not only did my reduction gear go out, it caused damaged to other parts (sorry not a mechanic dude so not sure all the name of the other parts). Anyway Honda did not want to cover the cost, so I agreed to pay out of pocket, turns out while my dirt bike was there waiting for parts another pretty much brand new dirtbike came if for the same problem. The Honda dealership worked with Honda, and Honda agreed to repair both bikes at no cost. Although I am relieved they did so, I was about to pay out of pocket had that other bike not come in. Honda knows this is a problem and they should right away start sending recalls instead of customers going thorough what I went through.

My 2009 250x starts perfectly when cold, but once the bike gets hot riding slow PNW gnar, the starter barely turns over - like a dead battery. I installed a new Yuasa battery, but no change. Can this be caused by those gears you showed? Or simply an old starter motor that needs replacing?
    Appreciate your thoughts

that’s exactly what is happening with mine

    • @MasonGeorgeMotorcycles
      @MasonGeorgeMotorcycles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Most likely it’s a combination of things. First of all I would check your valves, specifically the exhaust valves I would bet that they’re tight. Secondly make sure that the decompression lever is working correctly and lastly I would check to make sure that the battery is charging when the bike is running. If everything is checking out good then a new battery might be an order. 🏁

It sounds like a few folks are having the same problem I am but I haven't heard an answer to the question of "could this also be the reduction gear or starter clutch etc.?" What I am referring to is this - Problem: when the engine is hot, even though after having run perfectly, and after having started just fine cold (and many other times after that during a ride day) suddenly - the starter won't turn the engine over AND the engine is super hard to kick over and won't start because it's impossible to turn the engine over fast enough - because there is a drag on the motor - like the starter won't disengage or something. Another way to describe it is it feels like you're trying to kick it over with it in gear with the clutch out - even though the bike is in neutral. The only way I could get the bike to run again was on a steep downhill - in neutral (too much resistance to gain enough momentum if in gear even though the clutch is in). Once in neutral and plenty of momentum, pop it into gear and drop the clutch (ie bump start it) and it will overcome the resistance, start up - and run perfectly again. Before I just start tearing down and replacing parts has anyone experienced this and does anyone know what is causing the resistance? Again, could it be the reduction gear, is there some centrifugal bearing? could it be the starter clutch, or is it just THE clutch? Any help would be appreciated before I just start tearing it down and replacing parts. I've had to fix/replace just about everything else on this beast - couldn't agree more, my almost 20 year old KTM RFS engine dirt bikes have been way more reliable and problem free - and my 300 2-stroke - the best of them all. I have so much into this CRF at this point I need to fix it - even if I decide to sell it (don't want to sell it with the problem even though I easily could because for some reason it doesn't happen until after I'm deep into a hard day of hot weather riding.)

Hey Bud, I got a 22crf450rx and it starts, but it's really loud when it's turning over. I put an aftermarket starter on it (1st mistake) and it was still loud. Put a Honda reduction gear on it and it's still loud. Then the teeth on the crappy starter literally wore off the first day and then the starter was free spinning. Put the original starter back on and now I'm back to the original loud high pitch noise when it turns over. Starts fine just loud as hell, especially when it's cold. Got any direction you can point me in.

Without hearing it, that’s a tough one. Have you reached out to your local dealer to see if they have had any similar issues? Normally on a newer bike like that the dealer can offer some assistance and normally it won’t cost you anything.

i reshimmed the valves a bit loose by accident and it ran like shit but fired up on the button a good few times until battery died so i put it on charge again and made the valves bang on spec. turned it over with a plug in and another plug in the lead and it sparked all day long so i built the bike back together again totally and now the fucker wont start on the button again lol

The Kick start and E-start are two seperate systems. The slipping reduction gear will prevent the E-Starter from turning over the engine consistently. The starter motor is spinning, BUT the engine is not turning over very well. I TIG welded my reduction gear and have not had That problem again....
NOW, The one-way clutch OR Sprag Clutch can be be two different symptoms. 1. IF the E-starter sounds like it is being spun when Kick-starting, That means the one-way is 'Locked'. I find that if I get the engine started the one-way will usually 'Unlock' itself until I try to kick start the bike and it 'Kicks back' or back-fires... Then the one-way seems to get 'Locked-up' again.

Help. Dirt Happy Memorial Day to all.
2016 450x, dumped on the right side in a trail this morning. Right after the electrical start did not work. Would not turn over. Spent the rest of the day riding and kick starting. Now I home I checked the batter, reads fully charged. I checked the Main fuse. Looks fine, replaced and still doesn’t turn over. Any advise would be much appreciated. TIA

Hugo Gordillo Could be a number of things especially with the crash. I would jump the solenoid and see if it turns over, if it does it’s something simple like a connection and if it doesn’t you have bigger problems.

It depends on what part is acting up. A lot of times if the starter clutch or gear goes bad it will work sometimes and then spin others… if the starter goes bad normally it won’t do anything.

@@MasonGeorgeMotorcycles if you kick the starter will it spin with the starter?

My 450L just decided it doesn't wanna start in gear. Was pretty shitty downshifting and stalling then I couldn't fire it up in gear. Think its the same problem?
