    Health and safety programs and health and safety management systems are the foundation of workplace safety. These elements provide the guidance on the activities that make a workplace a healthy and safe place to work!

    just so I understand a H&S program is a list of programs and processes used to improve a hazard/risk in the workplace? whether it be through findings from a hazard assessment, make sure compliance is met, findings from investigation or monthly inspections, input from the team etc? thank you in advance! :)

      Hi Sandi! Welcome to the channel! Yes, indeed you are correct. A safety program is exactly that the collection of documents that direct and guide the different health and safety functions and activities. However, just to clarify, people often use the term synonymously with individual safe work programs such as a confined space entry program. Much the same also is confused for a health and safety management system which is actually how the different organizational systems interact to fulfill enterprise or organizational safety. Hi Sunday! Thanks for the encouraging words! To be honest I don't know what the labour market is like where you are but I do understand and feel the frustration and disillusionment when it comes to job searching. All I can say is keep at it, you have half the battle won, you have some credible certification! Take care! --Kevin

    We need health and safety programs. Things like stress can be catastrophic to a business. Stress is hard to evaluate as there are good stress and bad stress. Stress from stressors is an everyday event such as:
    1) Daily stress
    2) Chronic Stress
    3) Acute Stress
    It has been proven costs go up Telus spends an extra $120 per worker who drinks a year due to Stress, smokers, or adverse health effects such as heart attacks and other vices people use to try and ignore or relieve that stress. Meanwhile, the company is losing production time, valuable employees, money spent on health, and increased sick leave due to stress and other psycho-social issues including harassment and bullying, and don't forget work alone workers. Companies can do things to reverse work-related stress and other psycho-social stress such as having gym passes/membership for employees, stop-smoking programs, nutrition and medical staff lectures on how to handle stress including eating right, having a club or meet-up groups that people love to like, golfing, bowling, etc.
    Also, have collaborations with JOHS committees, whether it be surveys or meetings to further input. The problem is several issues due to:
    1) Fractured employment of Small and Medium businesses
    2) Lack of Enforcement and just like police, not enough people to go around to check up on everybody. You might meet an OHS once every 17-18 years or more or by complaint driven.
    3) Employers power-tripping by not giving the info out like they should defeat the Internal Response System (IRS) that is supposed to work between workers and employers.
    To have a healthy and safe program is just as important as a wheel on your car. With no wheels, your car is going nowhere despite the best new battery gas and top-notch fluids your car has under the hood.

    Can you please help me to know as a student how to create a safety programme for a workplace and what is one area of concern?

    • @ProvokingSafety
      @ProvokingSafety  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good question! You can also go to the about page on my main channel page and click on the show email address to send me an email if you wish. There are a few areas I think need the most concern, hazard assessments, new hire safety orientations and promoting the program within the organization (promoting safety culture). The next video in this series is going to be on hazard assessments within the safety management system or program. Thanks for the question!
