    For anyone interested in the Podcast he mentioned, The Fighter Pilot Podcast, here is some more info I wrote in reply to another comment if any one else is interested!
    The back catalog has interviews with a pilot of every modern and many past fighters (all Gen 4/5 and some gen 2/3). The first 36 episodes are not aircraft specific, just flying and related stuff (AA, different mission types, training, etc.). Here are some of the aircraft specific episodes I’ve enjoyed: Ep. 37 the f-18, Ep.42 the Tomcat, Ep.45 the F-16, Ep. 68 the JAS39 Gripen, Ep. 111 the f-111, and Ep.61 the F-22. They also have a lot of interviews about bombers (Ep. 67 the B-2, ep.72 the f117 and ep. 97 Avro Vulcan) jump out at me in particular as being a really good bomber episodes. Enjoy!

    Great stuff. Not a DCS player, not much time for gaming these days. But man, this reminds me of playing Falcon 4 twenty years ago. For all its bugginess, I’m reminded of just how ahead of its time it was. Flew many co op missions exactly like this with a mate who was just as into it. I’m also reminded of just how incredible and immersive the dynamic campaign mode was. Many times over the years I have reminisced and wondered if there would be a game that recreated that. Now I’m just happy to watch you and Growling Sidewinder vids on DSC, with a particular nostalgia for the viper. Fly Safe!

    Dan Hampton, author of "Viper Pilot" who specialized in Wild Weasels made exactly the same points. The really great weapon for Weasels are sensor-fused munitions that seek heat, metal and noise, but the CBUs and Mavricks with Hi-Rez tv are pretty awesome.

    Great video as usual. I figured I would weigh in on the differences between Marine air wing and the Air Force missions. DEAD is based off of the idea of DAS (deep air strikes) which is what the Air Force primarily focuses on doctrine wise (not saying the Air Force does not conduct CAS because they certainly do). SEAD is an infantry centric tactic based off of CAS (close air support) SEAD is conducted to give troops on the ground needed air support while protecting assets (the aircraft) in order for the guys on the ground to continue their mission with a higher survivability rate. SEAD missions have a couple different ways of deconfliction as well TOT or altitude. This is the primary purpose of at least the Marine Corps air wing.

    Dan Hampton would have never took off with 6 Mavs on his Viper because he also loves staying alive when flying home XD. The innermost mavs would blow off your stabilators, the possibility of carrying 3 on each stations was only intended in case the Soviets invade Europe with thousands of tanks and you needed to take out as many of them as possible, regardless the aircrafts would go down after attacking. Great video guys, always a delight to watch ;)

    This is interesting. I heard of SEAD before, but I never heard of DEAD before.

    • @FusionAero
      @FusionAero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The acronym pretty much writes itself. Deader is better.

    • @Cailean556
      @Cailean556 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DEAD is SEAD's slightly older (DEAD came before SEAD, before DEAD/SEAD were really given a name) twin that has a complex. As soon as you mention SEAD, everyone starts jumping up and down trying to correct you by saying "You mean DEAD". Well it depends on the mission. If the intent is to simply get the site to not fire/stop firing before a strike package flies over - that's more a SEAD function. If the intent is to kinetically effect the site and it's equipment, that's DEAD. In DCS, due to a lack of true EW/EA capabilities, the missions almost always rely on you destroying either part or all of the site.
      The two concepts really go hand in hand, to be fair. You can suppress an AA threat by firing large volumes of HARMs, or by having actual aircraft push the target (aka Wild Weasel), or by firing guided munitions intended to destroy part or all of a AA site. In SEAD the main objective is to overwhelm the site to the point it either shuts down so it can't fire (typically done via Electronic Warfare/Attack means, but lobbing HARMs its way also works) and is no longer effective or is damaged/destroyed to the point it can no longer function (such as taking out a search and/or tracking radar for sites such as SA-2/3/6). The risk, in reality, with SEAD is that if a critical piece of the fire control system is only damaged, it could be repaired and later cause issues. In DEAD the objective is, obviously, the site's complete destruction - because a site can't work if the materiel is on fire and in several pieces.
      Destroying the launchers is arguably better, but (in reality) the morale hit when a SAM battery runs out of missiles (because Wild Weasel has made them waste all their munitions) or their search and track (target acquisition technically, but I always refer to it as a 'tracking radar')/search radar is taken out, enabling strike packages to simply bypass or ignore them is an arguably equal effect. Plus it means they need to be resupplied, which opens up interdiction options and can lead to the discovery of strategic ammunition storage depots.
      Both have their place and merits but one is not essentially more "correct" than the other.

    • @FusionAero
      @FusionAero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Firing for suppression is usually less risky than firing for effect if it allows you to achieve some sort of greater objective.
      You'd have to be one steely-eyed missile man to stay at your station as those F-16's come around for another pass, or more afraid of taking one in the back from your CO for cowardice as you dove for the nearest ditch or foxhole. (Still a more inviting exit strategy than punching out over hostile territory) The DCS player has the advantage of a near-God-like omniscience of the threats he faces. If those SAMs had their usual IRL company of ZSUses and Strellas, spamming them with HARMs at range would have been safer than the low, slow, multi-pass.

    Glad someone else used the fighter pilot podcast for inspiration for a mission. Have some criticisms that I wanted to put out there. Hopefully at least one of these can help you make better videos. I don’t know how close to the podcast you were going for, but it was such a cool episode, I wanted to get as close as possible to what those guys were doing.
    SAM system choice: SA-11 wasn’t used by Iraq. Thankfully for the US. SA3 would be way more fitting.
    Also putting AAA nearby the SAM system or possible IR sites like SA-9 would have been a nice touch.
    Load out choice: thought it would have been more fitting not to use HARMs, since they were considered a waste of a wing station. Triple Mavericks wouldn’t be used. Realism aside for DEAD you want to be fast. Guess you kinda needed all 6 for that 11, but that brings me back to point 1.

  • @sharizabel2582
    @sharizabel2582 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Two Dogs is referring to using a HARM as a way to destroy a target radar. He knows very little about Electronic Warfare. That doesn’t take anything away from his skill as a fighter pilot. He thinks from the viewpoint of blowing shit up. Electronic Warfare is about keeping his alive so that he can blow shit up. The HARM is just one of the tools EW uses and it does it very well.

    I may be wrong, but I remember to have read in F-16.net, that the F-16 is cleared to carry two AGM-65 missiles on each triple racks on stations 3 and 7. Missiles on innermost racks may inflict damage on horizontal stabilizers when fired.

    Not to disparage your wild weasel pilot but the harm has two settings "home on radar" and "homes on last known gps" unless the radar is mobile and gets out of the area its toast or disabled. The Navy on your SA 11 mission would use a A6E to jam or in my time a Spark-Vark version of the F111. Suppression of Air Defense or SEAD covers anything from electronic jamming to destruction of units posing threats to Naval or Combined Arms units whether US or Allies. Great examples are the First Gulf War DS/DS.

    Great VID!!!!!, I find dcs a bit cheat in comparison to what they had to do, here we can easily enter gps of waypoint and tpod to it, im sure they did not have that. It is much worse to identify location of threat target it while being defending, hats off. Also in dcs we dont have jhmcs in its full glory to make this easy. I like how you used mav instead of tpod slave which fails me always handoff never works :D again awesome video, will defo use this tactics against not only 11's but will try against 300's, probably need a two flight two ship.

    Only thing I would have done differently is using gun on that radar, saving the Maverick for the launcher. As long as that long range radar is out of the picture, the SA-11s operating/area denial range is significantly reduced.
    But I'd also argue that 9 times out of 10, an SA-11 site is likely going to have either a short range SAM system (such as SA-8/SA-15) or a AAA system (such as a ZSU or SA-19, perhaps even MANPADs) defending it from what you were able to do (i.e. get within its minimum range and operate with impunity).
