I believe there is one manual in service on Lantau Island. There is also one previous-generation diesel-powered Comfort still in service, license plate GL2649, driven by a man who distrusts the new LPG Comforts so much that he keeps a spare diesel engine in his apartment.
the manuals are things of the past. all you see is drivers with the column going into park for no reason at stop lights. it looks cool though. and they get you where you need to be
@@passengerpigeon20 The manual blue taxi on Lantau Island is still running up to now (Nov 2020), with the license plate beginning with DC. Other than that, there are also less than 10 manual red taxis running in the urban area, often with license plates starting with letter J, indicating that the first registration date of these cars are on or before 2001. However, these remaining manual taxis are likely to retire in the coming year (2021) as there are rumours that insurance companies refuse to issue insurance for taxis aged more than 20. For the last diesel taxi GL2649, it is retired and it was heard that the owner have preserved the car in a private car park.

You've also forgot to mention Nissan Cedric as well, Hong Kong still uses the Nissan Cedric Y31 as Taxis as of now, although the older ones are much rarer to find on the road, they had the newer versions of the Nissan Cedric Y31 Taxi introduced back from 2013 with different bumpers and a different taxi top.
I had considered mentioning the Cedrics, thanks for the comment and info. Whilst I was in HK a few months ago I did see a few still running around. Might try to do a video on the Nissan next time I'm there. :)
Excellent observation. very comprehensive video. Just one point to add: No more 5 seater version after the 2007 facelift. This is one of the reasons why there are still so many pre-facelift version around: Owners would rather replace engines of them to keep the flexibility --- sometimes customers do call to request for a 5 seater so that they don't have to pay for two taxis. When this happens usually 4 people will squeeze into the back row, and the bigger person in to group take the front. Usually the middle front seat is occupied by the driver's stuffs.
Interesting vid. You mentioned in Japan a column-shift automatic is available on these. What you didn't mention , at least until 2015 to my knowledge , they were also available in Japan with a column-shift 5-speed manual . (I am currently looking at buying one of those to import to UK - which is how I know about them) .
Yes, and having grown up in HK, I used to be so fascinated with how the drivers executed shifts on a column mounted manual. Seemed like it would be much more prone to getting the wrong gear with such a small gear selection plate and a super long and skinny stick jutting out the column!
(8:44-9:05) This is why I prefer cars with a standard gasoline, or diesel fuel tank. While I like the idea of propane gas, the propane tank takes up a crazy amount of trunk space that would otherwise be used for luggage.
recently tokyo metropolitan government is trying to change old taxi for new toyota taxi for 2020 olympic game. Many old toyota taxi is sold in the market. So it is best time to buy one
Hi -great news but where can I buy one? Next week I will be in Hongkong - will try to speak to taxi drivers..if you have any contacts please let me know! :-)
They crash so much that they even import comfort from Japan just for parts. So finding comfort for sale is very hard in HK. Better to look at Japan second hand market.
The diesel taxis before LPG were all manual, I asked a driver why and he told me it better for going up hills and so they could cut in and out of traffic better. Thought it was strange to have manual vehicles in such a busy place but they all changed to automatic once they bought in LPG.
I've heard of the Toyota Crown Comfort, but for some reason, very few, if any were ever sold in the USA, so therefore, I've never seen one in person. I'd prefer this any day over a Toyota Prius, a Nissan VN200, and the Ford Connect.
We had them until the late 1970s however people still import them after the 25 year rule. I live in Illinois and I have a 92 Toyota Crown Royal Saloon wagon with a 1JZ
Love this car - so iconic. Brings back great memories from HK
This is like the quickest car in Hong Kong, with all the crazy taxi drivers
Sad news, this taxi is now being replaced by a new taxi, search "hong kong crown cab hybrid". I don't think they have the same charm as these!
@@racecardriverrr4201 the taxi is still used along with the jpn taxi
@@TIANIC121 Yes it's still more common but there is more and more of the new hybrid
I have been living in HK since 20 years ago and till now I have yet to see one with a manual.
Reduxzion Alot of the manual ones are in Fiji

Shawn Red that is true I go there every year and it isn’t common to see an auto

great video you've got there. Also, the taxi driver's so helpful compared to the others
I encountered when I was there. Hope you gave him a tip ;)

Nissan CEDRIC Y31 taxi has been Discontinued, and it is currently substituted by NV200 Taxi.
Cedric taxi still use in 2021
Love that a fellow Aussie is reviewing these.
Wow, thanks for this thorough look on the Crown Comfort. Learnt alot of new info. Glad to see this kind of content being published on TH-cam!
One of the most informative videos on the Crown Comfort! Although I believe the diesels were a 2.4 litre 2L engine, not a 2.2 as stated.
Love to buy an original one and import to Australia, love the way the driver can open the back left door
the japan version has auto passenger close door
Tb to when these were everywhere in Singapore, :(.
This is one of my favourite cars now after visiting Hong Kong :)
Someone imported one of these to Washington state the US. I haven’t been able to see it in person yet but it still has its original livery intact

Now they got a hybrid version for Hong Kong taxi
I love the design of these. I want to import one into the US when they're old enough (25 years) to import legally.
Next year onwards u can import the 1995 version
Don't you want to import some of the newer JDM cars or do you limit your desire to arbitrary governmental standards?

The mild hybrid Japanese company car version of these cars can now be imported to Australia! Yessss
Lots of legroom! You can really feel the AC in the front seat on a hot summer day.
Can anyone help me please? I want to buy one of this taxis and let them be shipped to Europe - but where to get a good one ?
Thomas Punzo me too, when I was in HK I was thinking how cool it would be driving around the UK in one, right hand drive too, big bonus 👏

@7:24 BTW. this thing is called LPG for a reason. It features LPG support which is way cheaper than Diesel and fuel.
