This song is about a man who could have enjoyed a life of love, fulfillment and purpose but instead chose to chase every dollar he could. This song was written in 1976 and he predicted the rise of the yuppie. It is one of Jackson's best. Sadly, in his own life, his wife committed suicide a couple of months before this album was released. He became a single dad quick. This album also propelled him to the spotlight as he became a big star with this one. Glad you like it. Jackson has written some very powerful, thoughtful and observant lyrics in throughout his career.

The counter culture kids of the 60s and 70s and the yuppies of the 80s were the same people, I think they call that growing up, the aging process. Do you prefer middle aged adolescents, they had a few of them too...I think those are the ones now over 70 with $0 in their savings account and even less in their IRAs...

"Chasing the dollar" as you say, is only one aspect of the larger meaning of the song. Which is about an idealistic young man having to adopt the ways of the mundane, seemingly meaningless, work-a-day world, setting aside, even denying, the deeper longings of his soul. He has to pretend. (And the person he becomes, living in the shadow of the freeway, is hardly a yuppie.)

@@iamhudsdent2759 That's always the way I took it. The protagonist never INTENDED to be so mundane, but that's just how it went, while all his hopes and dreams were sort of suppressed and lie dormant while he does "what he has to." Dreams deferred, Longings unsatisfied, mostly. I see it as a West-coast-style Bruce Springsteen song.

The record is a concept album (as I see it) with the character in The Fuse going through his first big experience at love and finding it lacking. In his own life his relationship with Joni had not gone well and this song, Pretender, was finished after his first wife died. I think he was in a temp store for rent while finding a place to live so the last verse turns very dark and bitter. He is a Pretender because this is how he is feeling but knows, deeper down, that he can not be happy in such a life so could yet be pulled away from it. That's why he asks us to pray for him.

“In a 1997 interview with Mojo magazine, Browne said of this song: "I'm a big fan of ambiguity and its bountiful rewards, and 'The Pretender' is two things at once. It's that person in all of us that has a higher ideal, and the part that has settled for compromise - like Truffaut says, there's the movie you set out to make, and there's the one you settle for. But in a more serious way, 'The Pretender' is about '60s idealism, the idea of life being about love and brotherhood, justice, social change and enlightenment, those concepts we were flooded with as our generation hit its stride; and how, later, we settled for something quite different. So when I say 'Say a prayer for The Pretender,' I'm talking about those people who are trying to convince themselves that there really was nothing to that idealism."

Agreed, I always assumed it was not meant to be from the point of view of someone planning their life that way, to become a pretender struggling for the legal tender... it's more a commentary on how things turn out for so many of us, the emptiness of the letdown after riding the merry go round of chasing the dollar and material pursuit and suburban utopia... and the lyrics are phrased this way, tongue in cheek, to show how silly it would have sounded to be aspiring to this if we had known beforehand

This song saved my life. It came out when I was a teenager, and I went to see Jackson Browne in concert during his "Running on Empty" tour. In my late 30s and early 40s, I started climbing the corporate ladder... I was surrendering to the search for the legal tender. My daughter told me that her early memories of me are of me bent over a computer doing work from home. I remembered this song, and went back to a blue collar life. I'm still at it, age 61. In great shape and LIVING! Married the girl I took to the prom... because she's always been the one. She doesn't care about money... only having fun. It's more than OK to "have enough" to live, so you can be healthy and live. I've always admired a great poet, and Jackson Browne is one. Prosit! from Texas.

Kenny ---- from one Kenny to another... You, my friend did the right thing. What you wrote was a story of how to live the best way in your situation. You've found the key and used it to unlock the door to contentment.
I have a similar story only I haven't found my love or had kids. But, I was caught up in becoming famous in the entertainment business and was in the tabloids, hanging out at the Playboy mansion dating playmates and daughters and ex wives of rock stars, and I turned 30 (1995) and realized that I needed to change the course of my life and two days after a huge star filled 30th birthday party I packed my things and left my home and birthplace, L.A. and moved to a smaller city in CA. and went back to work as an electrician in the Union and was anonymous, except that I ran into a couple people I knew from LA. But, I didn't tell anyone I met about who I was and who I knew etc... eventually a couple people who became close friends found out by seeing photos in my house with celebrities and lived that way for 17 years and then moved back to LA to start my own electrical contracting business, and as life works, I'm doing electrical work as a subcontractor for film and tv production on locations for about half of my business and the other half is service electrical for residential and small commercial work. I love what I do, I make morenthan enough money for a single man. I could make a lot more but I choose to not work every day, pick and choose which jobs I want to do and I'm relatively stress free. I don't have the love of a woman but I also don't have the hassle and stress of a woman in my life other than dating. I consider my business my child since I started from nothing, no business plan or any clients and built it up to being the #1 electrical subcontractor for all the major film and tv studios and production companies working on films for Terantino and Spielberg and many other big films, award winning, Oscars and Emmys and every other award, #1 shows multiple times. But my business is still just me and a helper once in a while and it's been 10 years. Like I said before, I make plenty to pay my bills and buy my toys and have fun without stress. Sometimes I'll work everyday for two or three months and make $40k and then I'll only work a couple days a week for six months make another $40k and then work hard or semi hard or take a couple months off and do some traveling or enjoy my hobbies.
Hug your wife and kids every day. You all stay safe and happy.

I'm still hoping to see reactions to songs from his Emmy winning album "The Missing Years". "Picture Show" and "All The Best" would be great choices. Guys you have to understand one thing about Jackson Browne. He was the calm voice after the chaos of the '60s. His music his songs slowed everything down and brought us back to reality. When he works on a song. It takes a long time. Listen to Bruce Springsteen's introduction of Jackson into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And he will describe to you Jackson Browne. In his most earnest and honest way. He has been a great American songwriter for over 50 years. And it's time to get him to the Kennedy Center Honors. It's his time. First concert I ever went to 13 years old with my late sister who is 16 at the time and four of her girlfriends. Puberty heaven. But it's always been the music with me. Please do yourself a favor and delve more into Jackson Browne. Before the deluge should be next. It explains the lives of the innocent men, we went to Vietnam's as boys, and when they came home all their lives changed. Thank you

I've always loved this song. Jackson Browne is an amazing songwriter. His voice fits his music perfectly, and the backing musicians, studio and road members, are as good as it gets.
Trying to figure out exactly what the song is about, I think is up to each listeners perspective.
I feel like it's about looking at life realistically from the average person's point of view, and realizing that even though your younger self's hopes and dreams didn't come true, you can still find happiness in the simple things in life.
Rock Me On the Water is a great song by him also

The thing is...the truly sad, sometimes melancholy thing is...we are all pretenders, doing what we have to do to survive, and often putting our dreams on the sidelines in exchange...and that's okay. It's life. On a lighter note, Jackson Browne, like Dylan, possesses that rare talent, a natural knack for writing songs that we can all relate to...on a gut level. My favorite singer/songwriter. Peace. ✌😊

Say a prayer to the pretender.

Mr Jackson Browne is one of the most gifted , talented , honest , decent and truely genuine people out there ! Considering what he has achieved in his long career , he may be expected to be rather hubristic on an occasion ? But i have never ,ever witnessed such behaviour. He is always a gentleman of the highest order ...always !

The singer is the "pretender". Moving through this life, fulfilling expectations and obligations, while pursuing the almighty dollar. Meaningless without love, purpose and family.
I believe I saw Brad's eyes well with tears, and I believe he understands that this is every man's dilemma in our current culture and society.
We spend so much time in pursuit of material things, then life, and age catch up.

I always felt this song was like, Harrison's , While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and New. Rider's, Last Lonely Eagle. He's asking his generation, "where did the love we propagated go". "True love could have been a contender". My generation sold out where it didn't to. You can still be in the system without giving up your core values. Up until the last few years we basically pretended that the movement never happened.

To me Jackson Browne portrays a perfect representation of the laid back Californian, circa the 1970's. He is a truly gifted story teller in song form and this is him at his best. Really great stuff. He has been or is very successful and as is common among celebrities, his personal life has had a fair amount of controversy.

No. Women are never satisfied and always want more. Males make the mistake of trying to provide it and get caught up in the need to buy such a life. Many become unhappy and fall prey to a "Perfect stranger" and love's illusion ends (only to restart in a new exploit). This is an observation made in the movie Boyhood, which I highly recommend.
