We Caught a Critically Endangered Fish.. | Surfcasting at Bedok Jetty | Shovelnose Ray

- Welcome back to yet another episode of Jives Fishing! Today we headed back to our favourite fishing spot in Singapore - Bedok Jetty at East Coast Park. The night was relatively quiet and the Marine Catfishes (Jahan) from a few days back were not around to "disturb us". However, just as we approached midnight, one of our surf rod's drag went screeching. We picked up the rod quickly and set the hook - it was a good fish! Turned out to be a Shovelnose Ray/Guitarfish/Wedgefish that weighed an estimated 20 + kg. This fish is critically endangered due to overharvesting and is on the brink of extinction (www.iucnredlist.org/species/4...) - as such, we delivered minimal harm to the fish and released it as soon as we got it up. Through this video, we hope to encourage others to do the same so that our future generations will be able to enjoy the presence of such a fish as well. Big stingrays like these also play important roles in the ecosystem by acting as apex predators. We truly hope that we can all play a role in preserving this species - let us prevent it from becoming a "legend of the past".

(By the way, just curious whether there is a technique to use a loop knot to bring up the fish at the tail rather than gaffing it? I never had the opportunity to try it, just wonder how difficult it is to use in real situation?)
Thank you very much for your support. Our friend did try the technique where he used a loop knot to try to bring up the fish by the tail but it took too much time to aim accurately which could tire the fish out so we decided to gaff it instead.

@@muhammadirfanmohamednoor1057 usually for smaller fish we use size 1 hooks. For big game we use 4/0-6/0 hooks

Population of this species are really getting lesser , just like in the early 90s in Jurong southern shore oil rig area guitar sharks and sawfishes of above 150kg are so normal on a day or night fishing trip using live arrow head squid of 12 to 15 inches , nightmare soon catching up of land reclaim in tuas out of sudden all are disappeared in local water , what left are photos of memory are kept with us
