My theory is that his whole family thought that the puppet version of him was better and treated the puppet better than the actual person based off of it (Matthias). He was being replaced and his sanity dropped. he started to get paranoid and thought the puppet version of him was actually alive and therefore he tried to burn it along with his father and the theater his father was working at. But then the puppet returned.
Said this in another comment, but the "never ending nightmare" could be referencing that he's trying to escape from the puppet, but fails to do so. It's like the puppet haunts him. "I want to wake up from this nightmare" could be foreshadowing his guilt about burning the theater. His injuries on his face could be from the fire too🙇♀️

When you turn into Louis in game you get points called perfect “self” meaning that Mattius pretends to be Louis because he doesn’t think hes good enough 😢

THEORY -
Matthias is already dead.
At the dead, his entire body is... basically dead, and hes like a ragdoll. The amount of times he had snapped his neck is also... concerning. And of course, at the end, he's inside some sort of coffin. Maybe he died on his birthday?

My theory is that Matthias' father was a puppeteer who made a puppet that can be controlled without strings. The puppet was modeled after Matthias and was named Louis and it brought so much wealth and fame to the family that Matthias' parents started to treat it like their son while Matthias was being neglected and replaced. Consumed with jealousy, Matthias burned the puppet and the theater his father works at. But after some time, Matthias started to see the puppet time after time, making him paranoid and a little crazy. Could this be all a dream, a fragment of Matthias' imagination? Or is there something more sinister afoot? And just how can that puppet move all by itself?
HELP I NEED THE THEORISTS TO DO SOMETHING WITH THIS I FOUND:
So in the minute 0:58 we can see in the news paper written:
“The puppeter artist and his (here’s a word thats not readable but I think it says WIFE) died as the theater collapsed”
And the theater collapsing (probably after the fire started by Matthias) is repeated several times so it confirms they/his father died from that.
Do with that info whatever you need ❤️

I wonder who’s the actual real puppet master… cause it feels like someone is controlling him and the puppet when that accident happens, and kept reminding him about what happen on his birthday.

Why do I feel like this survivor is going to have the most depressing backstory of the game so far?
EDIT: So it seems like some people took my comment the other way around, and now it's become a whole argument. First off, this is Matthias video it's not any other survivor on here, so of course it's all about him on here. Secondly, the people who actually did read my comment I appreciate because they noticed I said "I feel like" instead of believing I said "It's going to be" to show it was just an opinion I had. While it may be true that there are other characters who's back stories could be more sad than others, I only felt like Matthias was going to be sadder considering we all had a glimpse into his back story in this video. Remember to carefully read what I said instead of twisting it into argument material.
Still not as depressing as Norton's. Literally every aspect of his life was bad, and this dude had a full family in already quite adult years, they also don't look poor. And, of course, I doubt this character had to work on one of the most hard and dangerous jobs since childhood just to being able to buy food.

It's a stretch, to call this story "most depressing". Sad, yes, like most of the backstories in the game, but not "depressing", and of course not the "most depressing" of the game.
Lore upd: it's funny how people assumed that his lore will be depressing, but now we have a full story: a boy from wealthy family was not pressured to do anything, was jealous of a puppet and burned it down because he didn't get his birthday present (boohoo), killing his parents and hurting himself.
He has one of the most soft stories of IDV and easiest lives, he wasn't abused or pressured to do anything, just to be less gloomy with his parents. I guess, a lot of gen z can relate to that "tragedy". Matt, with all lore about him, is one of the most privileged characters in the game, not the most depressed.
With all that it's still a sad story, kind of, he had it all and ruined it all by himself, so imo it's kind of a gross character, but people will love him because he's cute so that's that.
Also there was no paranormal stuff, no experiments, no abuse, no hypnosis, it's already better quality of life than 90% of IDV characters.
I need IDV to continue creating ACTUAL scary designs and enough with twink hunters. We had enough of those Norton simps saying the most absurd thing in English chat
I love how he finally brings nack the horror element of IDV. Honestly, I don't care what his abilities are or how meta he ends up, I'm alreadu an aspiring puppeteer main:D

I have. A theory that he’s not even an actual puppteer as we only saw the puppet on strings a single time, he is treated as a puppet his whole entire life and there for he is forced to be a puppeter as it represents his life
I feel like that puppet Louis at the end said “Happy Birthday Matthias” Literally send chills at me.
Whatever happens to Matthias, it seems like he is not being cared by his parents and only focused on Louis. His parents only saying Louis name being their proudest but only Matthias saying along with his name too meaning that he wants to become their proudest too. In the end, only being haunted by that puppet Louis no matter how many times Matthias discarded/burns that puppet.
However, it’s feels like someone controlling him and the puppet knowing about what happens from the accident from that newspaper article at Matthias’s home as he receives the puppet Louis every birthday he had which is why that birthday theme played. Whoever knows Matthias, kept reminding him every birthday of that puppet and accident.
Edit: Scrap the part where I said he received that puppet every birthday. He actually received that puppet, every 1-2 weeks.

I feel like this should have been Leo’s surv form
so it seems that matthias changes (physically) AFTER the fire, conveniently when the puppet (called Louis? or is that the dad??) seems to 'take over' and starts controlling the strings. Assuming that the puppet is the one controlling him, (bcus Matthias mouth is stitched shut after the fire as well), perhaps it' the puppet that ruined/removed his eye somehow. wonder how he did it tho :]
an addition: i've watched this several times, and it seems to me that Louis (the puppet) has tricked matthias into thinking that HE's the puppet and not the other way around.
When the puppet keeps repeating its name? ("Louis" over and over as the dates change) it seems that he's CALLING Matthias that name. Then when Matthias finally answers by saying "Happy Birthday Matthias", it seems like he's referring to someone else like he believes that name is no longer his own.
Maybe that's how Matthias lost his eye in the accident of the puppet theater.

"My proudest" The puppet and him said their name at the same times and the photo switching from the puppet to Matthias hinting he want to be his father proud of him instead of the puppet and feel replaced by the doll, he was overshadow by the puppet to the point he kill his own parents on his attemp to get rid of the puppet.
Idk about the ending but it seems like he develop a schizophrenia that he keep seeing the puppet?

Yo I found out that Louis the Puppet is actually Matthias' dead twin brother & Matthias' clothes were actually made by Orpheus, so that means Matthias is actually in a neverending haunting nightmare realm & he was born in a family of puppeteers so Matthias' nightmare is from when Louis died😢

It would be great if his ability would be where he can put puppets around the map and can teleport through them to get away from the hunter but he could only teleport to one that’s the closest range or the hunter can see where he teleports too like embalmers coffin
thats literally what hell ember skill is , i dont think he will be like that cuz his not hell ember survivor . but we shall see
