  • Album: Word...Life
    Sello:
    Wild Pitch Records 1994
Omar Credle (born May 13, 1971 in Brooklyn, New York), known by his stage name, O.C., is an American rapper and former D.I.T.C. member who has been involved with several renowned Underground Hip-Hop groups and also released many solo albums
By 1994, finished the album Word...Life which includes everything on the demo was on except for his most notable single "Time's Up". "Time's up" was initially a record for Pharoahe Monch from Organized Konfusion. Beyond a quick outro from Prince Po, Word...Life does not have any guest appearances. This was not by design however as Nas was supposed to be on the album but never showed up to the studio for the recording session. The album was critically acclaimed and remains beloved in hip-hop circles.

For me this is one of the greatest rap songs of all time. The lyricism is so witty that most people can't even comprehend it. There's a reason why many consider this song so influential and everything OC said is just so true. How rappers these days just don't possess the energy that's needed, say the same shit over and over again, how they fool people with things they've not even been through, most of the time it doesn't even have a concept or is just a vanilla ice, same sex and glock shit. Man, this song hits differently now as I'm someone who loves the rap songs from 1990-2013 and basically after that rap fell off hard times. Only a few like Kendrick, Eminem, Jay Cole, Lil wayne, Nas have kept it alive.
My favourite verse will forever be: "Instead of puttin' brain cells to work, they abuse it
    Non-conceptual, non-exceptional
Everybody's either crime-related or sexual." This song will never get old dawgs.

"Everybody is either crime-related or sexual!" O.C. was calling out goofies in the 90s and this statement is even more true in 2020! This whole song is very, prophetic. Back in the 90s you saw the downward trend taking place in rap. The lyrics in this song would even slay all these fake tough guy's on the whole URL/ Smack battle rap leagues. This might be the best and yet the most important hip hop track ever to be created. It is so satisfying to watch him drop those beast lyrics with his homies around him, feelin those words and bobbing heads to that devastating beat.... for real, this to me represents the essence of real hip hop and how it stirred my soul growing up as a white suburban kid who felt an affinity toward the black culture around me. I'm 50 next month, but it's joints like this that will *never* let me grow old-minded. l continue to snap my neck to this beat for as long as I live.

In 2020, still one of the greatest hip hop songs in existence. "You lack the minerals and vitamins, iron and the niacin. . .
Of course we gotta pay rent so money connects,
but uh I rather be broke and have a whole lotta respect.
It's the principle of it. I get a rush when I bust some dope lines I wrote that maybe somebody'll quote.
That's what I consider real in this field of music.
Instead of puttin' brain cells to work, they abuse it."

    Fun fact:
    O.C. hated this song.
I really didn’t like the record. I [only] did two verses because I couldn’t finish a third verse for it. I hated that record! It took so long to write and I love the beat so much I had to prove I was worthy to rock to it-it was defeating me, man, so it was a crazy process for that record. Everything else flowed except for that record, [MC] Serch had to really, really convince me-the record almost didn’t happen. I’m glad it did, at this stage of the game, because I guess it’s one of those records that’s in hip-hop history books, but [Serch] had to practically go, “Oh, this is it, this is it. You said you wanted something to the left-this is it.” And I just felt like everything is off-I didn’t think people was gonna like it. The subject matter in the song is what caught people-it’s relevant today-so that’s why I’m proud of the song now, now that I’m a little wiser and a little older and I look back on it.
