I like John, not only because he is an absolutely phenomenal player, but because he strikes me as a very nice and genuine person. He could quite possibly be the nicest and most normal rock star/famous person I have ever seen or met. He seems very, very grounded. Is always polite and attentive with the person interviewing him. So often, we see interviews with musicians who make it very clear and obvious that they don't give 2 craps about the fact that they are being interviewed.
You are so right on all that Michael. I got to meet John after his show at the Tacoma Guitar Festival on April 21, 2018. He met with every fan afterwards....I heard he stayed until there were no fans left waiting. I also paid attention to how he interacted with all the fans prior to me. He really is attentive. He is in the moment with you. It was not just a hi/bye type of thing. He was interested in people. My daughter went before me...and he asked what she had in her bag (merch stuff/guitar festival free items etc), and she pulled some things out to show him...he truly was interested in what people gathered while there, and you could see it wasn't just a passing question. He was great with so many. With me (did not expect this from John 5..lol)...he started the convo, and commented that he really liked my hair (I still pretty much look like a product of the 80's)..and kept talking about it for a bit. You could tell he was just a super honest guy...that enjoys convo. He met us fans as ''people'' first.....not just as only fans. I then of course discussed his great show, and his gift of playing. There was not one bit of ''I am a star'' ego in that man. I told him he inspired me more to want to learn to play guitar...and probably many others after that show. He was so humble. In interviews, and even this video, you can tell he is just a nice human being.
right? super talented and is very down to earth and humble too! I'd love to meet him in person at a guitar clinic and get a John 5 tele hand autographed by him.
I have played for over 50 years. This guy is the real deal. Has a great understanding of scales, and how to get the most out of his licks. His versatility impresses me more than anything. I love pickers who love just playing, regardless of style. So damn versatile. Love it!
It's no wonder, after perusing the comments, that this man has so many responses as to his humble ness. No matter what video you see him in, he is a complete gentleman towards whomever he's with. He's one of the world's best at what he does no doubt!! And a Michigander to boot.
I just started to tune into his videos.. his appreciation for the guitar and just his humble personality makes him very appealing.. One of his videos he stated the different types of music he had an appreciation for and finally just said you know I just like music.. That's what I've been saying for years to people that always are thumbs down to different genres other than Rock.. And tips and advice I will be tuning in for.. Thanks John 5!!
I am an old school classic rock fan... I saw Rob Zombie in Corpus Christi Texas... I thought John 5 was gonna be just another heavy metal shredder... He did about a 15 minute solo that comprised of every sound you could imagine, and then some... I was amazed.... I would swear his background is Bluegrass, or for a minute, Southern Rock... When he broke up his custom Tele, I just about died.... Just an amazing player...
ya i say that 15 minute solo too it was AWESOME!! and when Zombie gets back on stage he is standing up on a huge podium and John 5 busts into "School's Out" and confetti goes everywhere……one of the coolest things i've seen at a show!!!
Yeh Brian... When I saw them, Alice Cooper was the opener... There was about a 3 story metal dragon in the backdrop. When that thing lit up, the rodeo was on. When J5 was doing the solo, I thought a riot was happening, but it was Rob walking through the crowd... It really opened my eyes to a different genre of music... Cheers...
You aren't far off actually, john talks alot about how one of his big influences growing up was country music and the tv show hee haw and he would watch them play a banjo on the show and that really influence his love of the guitar.
2:40 Paul Gilbert does something similar with a short scale guitar with just three strings tuned to three octaves of E so he can do some stretches that would be impossible on a regular guitar
1:02 Things like this stand out to people who know theory, but it's nothing serious. The E chord does not have an A flat, unless you think a D chord has a G flat, and spell the E major scale accordingly: F flat, G flat, G sharp, B double flat, C flat, C sharp, and a C sharp double sharp. There's some usable knowledge in John's world. You can thank me later.
Geez that string skipping lick few days i saw him doing it posted question if anyone can explain and here he is explaining it in detail and it turned out to be so simple!btw did not he borrow it feom Paul Gilbert the album Get out of my Yard?sounds familiar!
G Yea that happens to my Les Paul if I stand near the amp a certain way. I watched video of Cannibal Corpse recording an album(I think "Kill" but I'm not sure) but they had a square taped off because if the guitar player played the guitar anywhere else but that taped off square,it would hiss like mad.

I always compare him to Dimebag. Both are badasses and sincerely appreciattive of their fans.
and drug free

There is playing abs then there is picking
5:30 This guy plays a left handed guitar upside down better than I will ever play a normal one! What a legend!

Everything I see with John 5 is a hoot! He is a man I would love to meet, a true master of the instrument and zero attitude. Hat's off Sir.
I just had a lesson
from John 5.
It's raining and I'm gonna play all day
🤘
yeah he motivated me to play more as well.
John 5 is just AWESOME! What a great guy! Love watching his interviews and I hope I get to see him next month in Anaheim, California!
John 5 is the best Guitar player on the planet 💯
0:01 God-damn gorgeous.

Man I love this guy. He is a natural. His picking and timing are impeccable.

He was a session guitarist for a long time as well. So he was doing a lot of playing of other styles of music to make money.
I love this peace. Sitting on the porch on a beautiful evening watching the sunset 🌅
John always looks like he's wearing a wookie. But the man can play.
Love the lesson, love John and love that Dressed to Kill shirt!
Everybody gangster until the left handed guitar comes out
2:40 Paul Gilbert does something similar with a short scale guitar with just three strings tuned to three octaves of E so he can do some stretches that would be impossible on a regular guitar
He also has a double neck and uses one neck for only only three strings which is pretty funny
Thank you, Nick for throwing in that last bit with the lefty Tele! Cheers!
He's so kind
Maybe one of the most creative guitar players in the world now, a great guitar player and great musician.
My new discovery and hero. He produces a completely unique sound brand!
His style of playing is top notch.
thanks SweetwaterSound!
Do a slide John. Strum the opposite direction bottom to top.
That was bad ass dude. Well done.
I think you guys should get John for gearfest 2018!!

I was half-expecting John to play See You in Hell since he is like a living Jukebox. Maybe next time.
John 5 is a master.
John 5 does behind the nut stuff?
You know you're a serious rocker when your humbuckers hum like single coils.

Metalhead Lazz if only cannibal corpse was a talented band
@@Tomekkplk You've accomplished more, I'm sure...
That was sick
Tabs do not work, error 405 not allowed
Damn, I'm left handed, and he still plays left handed better than me! John 5 you are a legend. A guitar god.
He's the real deal...
Looking forward to seeing John 5 at Tacoma guitar festival

Can someone explain the headstock trick not the bend but the pinch harmonic I can’t tell if that’s all he’s doing or what
John 5's first words as a baby was 'A flat' 😂
“ I sometimes like to think John 5 was the long lost ‘rocket fueled’ son of Buck Owens.”
