Why Does One Of The World's Poorest Countries Sponsor Arsenal?

  • Rwanda, whilst having one of the fastest growing economies in the world, remains a widely impoverished nation in which 39% of citizens live below the poverty line, as the country looks to rebuild under the controversial leadership of President Paul Kagame.
There is outrage then, in some quarters, at the Rwandan government for paying £70 million to sponsor Arsenal for seven seasons, who Kagame's supports, and a further £7.25 million a season to sponsor Paris Saint-Germaine (PSG).
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at this controversial move, the reasons behind it, and the situation in Rwanda more broadly.

The fact that we are discussing about Rwanda is exactly the point of the sponsorship, I bet many of your subscribers didn’t know about Rwanda . You need to spend money to make money, the sponsorship is not charity. It’s an investment like any other. I think it’s a deliberate decision from Rwanda to invest in local tourism. Tourism is now the main forex earner for Rwanda. In fact the airport has become small due to large increase in tourists that Rwanda is now building a new airport bigger than Heathrow.

It was poor until very recently, and is still considered a developing country. The only reason for the size of the economy is the sheer amount of people. In 20 years time when the one child policy comes home to roost, it is game over. Rwanda will be poor still for decades. But it is on the right path economically. I was lucky enough to visit Rwanda a few years ago. It’s an absolutely spectacular country.
Visiting the Genocide Museum was one of the most emotional and thought provoking things I’ve ever done.
It’s clear when you are in the country how essential tourism is to the economy and you can see first hand the benefits to the population from the tourism. Around Volcanoes National Park there are numerous schools and other infrastructure projects that are almost entirely funded by tourism.
I’m not saying that the sleeve sponsorship is a good or bad thing and I’m certainly not supporting the governments decisions but I haven’t been anywhere else where the benefit of tourism was so obvious to the local people.

The Maldives is the most obvious example of tourism benefiting people. I went and stayed in the capital rather than on one of the tiny expensive islands. Deliberately to see how it benefits the people. Given it is literally the only way to earn foreign currency for the nation. Gambia is similar, but at least has wildlife and mangrove swamps. Rwanda just hasn't got the wildlife, otherwise it would have the tourists of Botswana, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

We all know coca cola or Heinken, but think about why they always spend billions on marketing with literally no new products.
That's what Rwanda is looking for, keeping a brand in our eyes eventually stamps it in our minds which may become a default consideration whenever you have various options.
Young kids, fans of Arsenal and football in general will grow with a positive image of Rwanda, unlike the old who have the genocide as the first thing to come to their minds when they hear or see Rwanda.
with only $40m per season, millions of people are constantly exposed to Rwanda even without knowing.
All fans of other English clubs also get exposed to Rwanda and Rwanda ads whenever their teams play Arsenal home now add France's PSG.
Today Rwanda is exposed to millions of people worldwide, those who watch football news, shows, those who buy or sell kits, and more, all major TV advertise Rwanda unknowingly.
Had Rwanda used the old approach of dealing with TV ads, they would have paid just the same or bigger amount for a few minutes of airtime on one station.
Today stations from around the world that covers Arseanal or EPL activities advertise Rwanda with no choice.
The success of this deal is not calculated just on how many visitors visit Rwanda in one season, it is about changing the global negative perspective on Rwanda which its benefits will keep coming even when the deal is over.
Rwanda is known of thinking outside the box, as we speak, they're filing for the world's largest broadband system in space made by over 300,000 satellites, yes Rwanda has no capacity to build such infrastructure, but once the UN approves it, it means Rwanda will be the first country with well regulated space in space which means private companies like Elon Musk's space x and Starlink would feel it is easier to buy a spot in space from Rwanda than starting from scratch, 300,000 spots would leave Rwanda with enormous money yet they invested literally nothing.
It is really disgusting how people run to call out the African leaders as whatever negativity they feel they put on them even when they just talking about something which benefits all their population.
Rwanda has a thriving Airline, the world's first nationalwide delivering drones started in Rwanda and the company is now worth $ billions.
Yes Rwanda receives aid but it had made sure that aid is used separately to pre designed projects outside national budget hence aid does not collide with their daily lives and decision including their foreign policy.
Rwanda slapped Germany, UK and France many times when they try to meddle in their politics expelling their ambassadors on many occasions until the later would change their minds.
In 2018, Rwanda and the U.S. fell out in a trade war making Rwanda joining other countries like China, Canada and Europe in Trump trade war.
Rwanda is a country coming from far, but it is moving at a fast speed, UN's HDI report reported that Rwanda was the world's fastest developing country in Human Development since 1990s followed by China.
All the above and more don't just fall from heaven, especially to a small landlocked Poor african nation with limited resources and population of 12 million people coming from the world's worst genocide.

In the vast majority of situations, authoritarianism is bad. And there will come a day, likely soon, when Kagame will need to step aside.
But in a situation like Rwanda was in following the Civil War/Genocide, etc, and given what his leadership was able to accomplish for the country from that point forward, an authoritarian streak can and probably should be overlooked.

As the adage goes: "if you don't want to be criticized, sit and do nothing". The fact that Rwanda and Kagame has received much criticism from all corners of the world, at the same time, the country has been one of the fastest developing, shows that the president and the people of Rwanda are up for something. Hope they won't be distracted by the criticism, because it's better to do something and be criticised than doing nothing not to be criticized. The good thing is, in all the criticism, there's nowhere Kagame is said to be using the money to benefit himself. Also, when people talk about Kagame's critics being targeted, their use of violence and divisive politics to destabilize the country should also be talked about. They should not be treated as saints that are being harassed. In 2018 and 2019 some Western governments warned their citizens against travelling to Rwanda due to attacks by the so-called critics.

Rwandans are running from their own country and crossing to Ug and Tz bro...
      Reason?
Imagine being a child or a member of a family where if the father or the head says a word.....no one objects even when they are obviously being oppressed...
A home where if anyone tries to object is either jailed and charged with terrorism or mysteriously dies by assassination..
A home where by you can only exist if you are 100% in support of everything done by the head..
A home where those that object to the ways of the head and decide to run away for fear of their lives are hunted down and shot or strangled..
A home where the head brags publicly for killing those opposing him.
This home has nice flowers, well paved walkways and a good looking house that makes outsiders admire and praise the head..
The family members live in fear and anxiety..
The news from this family are well doctored and only the head’s chosen media is allowed to report about any events occurring and the private media companies are controlled with a whip to continuously paint only the positive picture for the outsiders...
      The family members understand that the keys to survival are;
      1. Don’t ever say anything negative about anything or the ways of the head whatsoever.
      2. Don’t even think about objecting to the ways of the head unless you want a ticket to your grave
      3. If you decide to do the contrary, run to your neighbor and live a highly sophisticated lifestyle so that you confuse and make it hard for your hunters since they are obviously tracking you.
      3. Don’t ever open your mouth to say anything negative about the head’s ways on social media or to a journalist..
Have you ever heard of a story of a girl born in a royal family, the father or mother stage manage a relationship with a boy born from an equally rich or royal family..
The two meet and Mary only to find out that the girl isn’t happy but tries to hang on because she doesn’t want to disappoint the parents, she’s living a lonely and miserable life inside a mansion..
She tries and tries to carry on until she can’t carry it anymore and finally she escapes from the home...
Falls in love with another guy with a total opposite social status but takes care of her, gives her respect, freedom and showers her with jaw dropping moments that make her feel like she’s in paradise.....
They are crossing to Ug and Tz because they know that staying in Rwanda is too risky for them....
Two years ago the head devoted to lock the gates so that he can try and out to an end the unending silent immigration of members seeking freedom since they diner have a platform to raise their voices without being clinically eliminated by the head.
That’s exactly what’s happening to the majority people of this country...forget about what you see in the media....

Comparing how much people earn in Rwanda with someone in Paris or New York is totally irrelevant. People in Africa, which is mostly rural can live for several months without having to buy anything. Also questioning Arsenal's ethics in doing business with Rwanda as if the West is the standard model of good governance is just down right superiority complex. The world bank index of places to do business is just one way of saying "the most compliant African country for the west to rip off". Just being obsequious is not the same as good for your people yet any country that fails to comply with western demands will suffer the wrath of negative advertising dressed up as intelligent observations. More like laundering money, the easiest way to launder loads of dirty money is to move the money trough the London's financial services that's the reason u get so many dodgy people investing in EPL.
I think that it was over 300 billion pounds of dirty money that got laundered in London in 2019

The economy is growing rapidly and citizens are having a better standard of living than ever before, but Rwanda still isn't considered a "rich country", even by African standards. There is still a large proportion of people living in poverty, the GDP per capita is around the African average (though that isn't really a reliable stat as I came to realize) and the size of its economy is still very small, but I'm sure it won't stay that way for long.
