I’ve met Steve twice. No rock star attitude with him. Such a talent. The first 2 times I saw him play 24 years ago I was in tears. I couldn’t stop crying (?) & couldn’t believe someone could play that well. I felt I was watching history…🎸
I respect all the guitar guys since Terry, but this really takes you back to early Chicago! They need a current, dominant sounding guitar lead like this!!
Finally, a guy worthy of playing Terry's CTA work, but they cut huge pieces out of both these songs, especially out of Poem. Also cut out the entire second verse of Purples.
I'm not even that big of a Steve Vai fan and havent listened to Chicago in quite a while, but this is very cool. Not quite Terry Kath cool, but still very good. Southern California Purples is in my opinion the most underrated Chicago song of All Time. The version from Live at Carnegie Hall is exceptional...😎 This version is waaaaay too short and ended prematurely. Oh well, nice try anyway...
I wish they would do this in concert more. Maybe they should hire this guy. I've heard a lot of good things about Steve Vai but haven't seen or heard him until now. I haven't seen this much energy since Dawayne Bailey was with Chicago.
Excelente ! Muchas Gracias por subir el vídeo, me traslado al primero disco de CTA y a los conciertos del at Carnegie Hall de New York, lo más cercano a como tocaba el Gran Terry Kath, saludos desde la Ciudad de México !!
I was hoping he would at least play the same "geography" on Poem 58, (2:20 in the studio version). Terry was so eclectic, and wish they had ventured into that territory more, since they did almost everything else.
@@Larrybabbin1957 I only went the first night I thought he absolutely killed it on ever song he was on did they do anything for the songs without him the second night?
Poem 58 is cool, but South California Purples needs to stretch out. I just listened to Terry at Carnegie Hall on Purples, and he stretches out a 10 minutes guitar solo, minimal effects, just some distortion, and wah pedal. Steve Vai needed to stretch out as well, he could have really cooked.
The worst audio of any show I have ever seen in my entire life. Sound guys were asleep half the time. Entire solos were muted or so quiet. Vocals were missed because channels were muted. Trombone was consistently too quiet. Overall mix was totally off. I've never been so angry. Way too expensive to be so half-ass, especially considering the amount of talented artists in that room. 🤬
Vai sounds like a tin radio speaker - with a rip in it. No reverence or respect or appreciation. And I think he needs a bath. Lose the attitude, Srevie. He should have stayed home.
Absolute goosebumps when Stevie Vai is playing Poem 58.
This is fantastic. Vai does justice to Terry''s old parts, and the crowd seems into it.
VaI is considered by many, as one of the top 10 guitarists all time. He can handle pretty much anything
@@jackarmstrong1838 Except Kath
WOW! Never would I have thought I'd see Steve Vai w/Chicago playing 2 songs from Chicago's debut Album 1969.
Same here, never ever, it was amazing!!
Same here, except it sucked.

Much respect to Steve Vai, Chicago
Wow that was great ! Great Chicago deep tracks , love the newer Carnegie hall release of poem 58.but this was great !
OMFG! I can't believe im actaully hearing two of the best songs Chicago ever did finally being played and none other than Steve Vai. Incredible!
Fantastic and at almost 80 Robert still bringing it.
Deep cuts from the epic debut, Chicago Transit Authority, so cool. Thanks for posting!

Ive had the privilege to tech and join with him. Amazing soul he's always excited and humbled

My thoughts exactly!
I saw them about five years ago and the guitar was so low in the mix that if I wasn't watching Keith I wouldn't have known he was on the stage.
Robert sounded so good on Purples that one should be in their setlist every night!
Oh yeah

Robert Lamm in my opinion will always be one of the most underrated songwriters ever the man has written so many classics
@@parkerthompson3447Agreed and most of his solo albums are excellent and criminally underrated.
You're right. Terry's solo in this track IS the best I've ever Heard. That's all.
I only went to this show just to see Steve Vai play Poem 58.

Many have him as one of the top 5 guitarists of all time. He is THAT FREAKING GOOD.
Steve wouldn’t do it.
He’s strictly a solo artist.
This was a one off he was just a special guest.
WOW the best thing Chicago has done since 1977
Maaaaaaaan, this is amazing. Took me way back
Right up there with best Of Chicago Transit Authority
It’s called South California Purples
One of my Chicago favorites.
Loved it
Thank you for posting! Vai was inaudable from the 3rd row, now I can hear what I missed!
Definitely sounds like they were too loud for the room and the drums were washing everything out.
Love the CTA Music.
I just wonder about vai. From polyphia to chicago. What a guy.

Vai shoulda done "Free Form Guitar" off their first album.
Thats the most Chicago had sounded like Chicago in 30 years
I was hoping he would at least play the same "geography" on Poem 58, (2:20 in the studio version). Terry was so eclectic, and wish they had ventured into that territory more, since they did almost everything else.
South California Purples
Steve was very good of course. They didn't think Tony could play this?? I'm sure a healthy KEITH HOWLAND COULD☝️💯
The song title is "South California Purples", (not "Southern California Purples").
wish they'd show the singer when he singing -incredible performance though from all
I should’ve gone. Dammit
Seeing Steve Vai cosplaying as Terry Kath was not on my bingo card.
Dam... To bad the Audio quality was so poor.
It’s. Cell phone what do you expect.
@@jaycareaga9929 Well DUH....
It was a great show. Too bad Steve was only on stage for three songs.
He would've stole the show if they had him out there for any longer honestly Judith Hill and Kingfish absolutely killed it
@@parkerthompson3447 The next night Kingfish wasn’t there. He’s great.

@@parkerthompson3447 Robert Randolph pretty much played on the songs. He was on stage a lot. I was hoping Vai would play more!

Love Lamm. Not really sure what they hope to achieve with Vai doing is "super-Strat" thing. Slap in the face of Kath.

Depends on where you were I was right near the sound booth and sounded just fine to my ears aside from some hiccups at the beginning
Dreadful and another poser. Leonid does it better now.

The Horns and that Guitar don't go well together. Sorry, not sorry.
