  • We've had a lot of people, mostly non-boaters ask us "what's the difference between anchoring, docking & mooring your sailboat?" So much so that we thought we'd make an explainer video to briefly explain some of the differences and why we like each of them.
As a boater, especially cruiser's like us, you have to do one of these three things either on a daily or weekly basis. It's good to know the ins and outs of each and the reasons to do one over the other and similar important details. We hope this helps clear things up!

We’re Vanessa and Sara and we’re taking a journey up the east coast of the United States on our Pearson 385 sailboat, Good Stories.
Join us as we sail to various ports of call, show you our DIY boat projects and teach you a little bit about sailing. You’ll enjoy the cruising life with us as we drop the hook in anchorages and tie up at marinas. Best of all, you’ll get to come aboard with Whip the Adventure Cat, our cuddly and charming Russian blue.

Great video, Sara! This is so comprehensive that I would show it to beginner students to explain this. Great job!

Kaz - that's awesome! Feel free to use it anytime. It's funny but that's the number one question our non-boater family and friends have asked us on this trip. Thought we should finally settle it through video! Thank you for watching it.

Very interesting. Thank you! Have you encountered any places (like the Keys) where anchoring in certain areas is forbidden due to the possible damage or for whatever reason?

We didn't encounter any areas along our journey. But we do know such areas exist. We definitely think the reason there were moorings at Indian Key was to prevent people from anchoring.

As you traveled up the coastline, did the seafloor change to rockier rather than mud/sand (esp. near New England)? As you get into more rocky areas, would a captain change out the anchor for a different type? My wife and I have LOVED watching your adventures on this channel after reading about you in the Tampa Bay Times (we're local in Manatee County) - keep up the great work and the great video editing!

Hi Steve, thank you both so much for reaching out and for watching our channel! We did not change out our anchor. Even though the terrain gets a bit rockier, turns out there's plenty of sand and mud up north as well. We had excellent holding in most of the anchorages we stayed in and did not run into any issues. Do you have a boat? Thanks for the question. -Sara

@@2WomenSailing Hi Sara - thanks for the quick response! That's interesting - I always assumed the NE coastline was so rocky that the seabed must be rocky too. I wondered what would happen if you dropped a plow anchor and it stuck on a rock 30' down! Sadly, I do not have a boat now, but I grew up on the Great Lakes, so I spent a lot of time on many of my friend's families' boats, and later on: one my wife and I bought. We've been thinking for a couple of years about getting a boat again, since the water here is SO BEAUTIFUL. Your story in the TBT caught my eye because of that, and we've just loved your channel. :)

Honestly, we were worried about it being rockier as well. In the event we ever got caught on something, we would have had to just cut the chain to free ourselves. We did bring a spare anchor and extra chain just in case anything weird happened. I have never been to the Great Lakes but would like to get up there one day. You’re right about the water here, it is SO beautiful. It’s easy to have boat day dreams! So glad you like the channel. It’s my labor of love…and it’s been such a fun way to document our journey while sharing it with others! -Sara
