In Kilkenny we knew well the damage Offaly could do when they were in the groove. Who knew at the time this was their last big day? It was also the last time we saw a team relying on skill alone triumph over a team who were very fit. The year before they played each other and Offaly had the superior hurlers but Cork ran the legs off them and won.

There were 3 players on that team not of county standard for the time.. The team of the 80s was better

@@sir243_simr I think u have a point and if picking position vs position I'd say there would be way more from the 80s team. But Whelahan, Johnny Dooley, Johnny Pilkington, John Troy and other people would add other players to that.. Joe Errity was extremely effective when things weren't going well. Kevin Martin, Martin Hanamy, Kevin Kinahan. But them 4 above they I think put 90s team above the 80s, just my opinion. Even the sort of hybrid years of 89-92 were extremely unlucky not to have won an Ireland.

@@tadhgoconnor434 the well of talent had kinda dried up by the year 2000 tadhg, thats why the team was kinda threadbare, as i say three positions that were filled on that team v cork were very ordinary and i dont want to be insulting any player when i say that

Keep me honest here but for an Offaly hurler Joe Dooley has some serious medals 3 all Irelands 85,94,98 7 Leinsters, and One national league title that is some haul

Offaly beat the All Ireland champions in both codes that year. Meath in the football and Cork in the hurling

There is one thing about Offaly, when they come and show up, they show up with a great team, not like Galway, who show up with the Junior B lads, most of the time...

My father basically kidnapped me that day. I didn't want to go to Croke Park to watch Offaly be humiliated after THAT quarter-final but he insisted.
Was crying at the final whistle, every hair standing on end.
Pity we got battered in the final :-/
