  • EP 075: The mechanics of a dark pool, and a quest to make markets “fair” w/ Dan Aisen from IEX
For this episode, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Dan Aisen-one of the co-founders of IEX, and one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Finance (2015).
Dan got his start at RBC where he developed their flagship execution algorithm, THOR. This was also where he met and worked under Brad Katsuyama-one of the other co-founders and CEO of IEX, who was heavily profiled in Flash Boys.
As many of you may already know, IEX is an Alternative Trading System (ATS), or more commonly referred to as a dark pool. However, they’re currently in the midst of filing for exchange status.
During our talk, I asked Dan more about the projects he worked on at RBC, how IEX went from nothing more than an idea to an operating trading venue, and why they’re on a quest to make markets “fair”.
We also discuss the “speed bumps” which have been implemented at IEX, the mechanics of dark pools, and general chat about the broader market structure.

Thankyou for providing a very informative video. I didn't really know much about the concept of dark pools before so I have learnt a lot from listening to Dan Aisen from IEX who is a smart man.

What a joke - fairness? What about the poor retail investor that gets destroyed from dark pools - God help us all

Question... how long does it take for dark pool executed orders to hit the stock market?

Thats what they don’t tell you and that’s the only reason they use them depending how it’s crowded it can not be reported for a week this happens constantly. That’s the only reason to use them they can give you 1 million other reasons they use them to filter in and out of their treats without people knowing by the time they reported it’s already had it affect on the market.

I don't think any of this fast trading affects us small time buyers/sellers. I don't think it matters much. Especially if you have a set buy or sell price w a "good til" on it. I don't care if the fast trader sells or buys at an "old" price. if you're buying huge amounts it would matter, otherwise, don't care. It's not costing me money.

You obviously aren’t a Trader then! If you can report a trade five days later, after you’ve spent five days filtering in or out of a trade, how the hell does that not affect all traders come on man

great podcast, but responding with "no trouble at all" to your guest seems a bit offputting.
