Well, MotorWeek, you did it again. You brought back some great memories.
I was 21 back in 2003. I wanted both of these cars so bad. I remember going to the Mitsubishi and Subaru dealers drooling over these. I landed on the Evo only because it came with a radio lol. One issue was that every dealer in my area had $10k markups (Sounds familiar) on both, and no dealer would let you test drive these. I waited a few months, and I was able to make a deal at sticker for a black one coming right off of the truck. This was the most exciting time of my life. I immediately started modifying the Evo and hit 75-80 for some 1/4-mile runs. Many years, and 30+ cars later, the Evo is still one of my favorite cars! Back when you actually had to drive a car, a true experience. I still have my owner's manual and window sticker 🙂
    Thanks again MotorWeek!!

These were good times. Cars today just don't have the outside the box quirkiness and passion that made cars like this so much fun.
I remember seeing an STI for the first time in 2003 at an autocross. It was early, still dark out. When those HID lights came on and slowly started to brighten... well I finally got an 06 STI in 2011 then proceeded to improve it (mostly suspension and reliability mods). I love the car! It has such a unique driving experience. Powering out of a corner is where this car really shines.
I do have an affinity for the EVO too especially the 6.5 TME.

The STI's could clobber the mustangs in pretty much every performance metric from 2004 all the way to 2011 until the coyote 5.0 came with over 400 horsepower stock. It took ford to build a mustang GT with 100+ more horsepower than the 2.5 boxer 4 banger to out accelerate it the STI. That was a loooong 7 years for mustang GT owners sharing the streets and tracks with STI's. STI's changed the game back then and now are instant collectibles. AMAZING machines.

Funny how my 1999 Camaro Z28/LS1/Automatic did a best of 13.5@106mph. All I did was a muffler delete, cut holes in the bottom of the air intake box, then replaced the top intake lid of the airbox for $30 which had no sort of restrictions or sound silencers like the stock intake box lid. Those two mods literally gave you 10-15 rear wheel horsepower over stock.
I have no doubt that the Evo or STI would smoke my Camaro off the line if they were willing to do 6000rpm clutch dumps and risk grenading their whole driveline. In a straight line those rally cars would not win(stock vs stock), but man did they handle and were a lot more fun to drive in the twisties than my Camaro. Also it was way too easy to turn the power up with the STI or EVO, just increase the boost until it blows up in your face.
