    Part of your problem is the polarization of the vibration. Your vibratory motor is vibrating things up and down and back and forth in a vertical plane otherwise known as a sagittal plane. What you want though is to rotate your motor 90° so that it's axis of rotation is vertical. This means that your vibration is back and forth and left and right instead of up and down. I believe this will address some of your problems

    I have been brainstorming building my own sorting machine, but for cat litter. My first thought was also several drawers with an attachment for my reciprocating saw, then a cement mixer motor, since I just used one when pouring my front steps. This is the exact one I found in my first search, and you've already done a lot of my work for me! Not sure if this thing would be too aggressive for me or not yet, but thanks for sharing!

    You do realize that you can adjust the vibration with more than just the speed. That model of vibrator is designed with removable ends once opened there are the offset discs. There are multiple of them on each side and depending on their orientation you can change the poundage or rather the intensity of the vibration. Out-of-the-box they come set at 180°which is around 60 lbs for that motor. But if you offset the discs you can lower that intensity so things aren't flying off on high-power while maintaining the Hi power or speed of the oscillation to keep things sorting

    That shovel is a deadly weapon against those poor worms, cutting them in half. Metal used around live worms in that way is a no-no. Thanks for the video.

      For the most part I do agree as most of the tools I use in my bins are plastic. But the edge on the shovel is dull and the compost is very loose so they should be okay.

    You have a lot of large material making it out the end. To remedy this take a page from gold prospecting. Add a classifier screen (3/4" expanded metal) to the top of the box where you feed material. The vibration will shake and break up material and spread it out more before entering the box. Just bolt it directly to the frame. No need to angle it since you shouldn't have anything larger than the classifier holes in the material.

    You might want to consider adding in a bar that runs across at an angle to slow how fast the compost slides down the chute, a second one running opposites that if their is spaces would almost double the time it spends on the chute.
    Also consider adding a plate at the bottom to limit spray and maybe a hopper on the top for adding soil without the shovel.

    Capt Matt uses a small board and pushes castings back up so they spend more time sifting. Les large chunks in end.

    I think that the inclination is to much, try to give the panel less incination this give the casting more time to pass trough the panel's holes

    I think what you have there is a potentiometer giving you a variable amplitude 60 hz power. You should try a VFD (variable frequency drive) which will give you variable frequency power at full amplitude. This should allow you to turn down your speed more effectively. a vfd is gonna be way more expensive. but its a one time cost. IF you try this do not go below 50 % speed (30 hz) to avoid heat probs with your motor.

    Instead of mounting the vibration motor horizontally (giving you up and down vibration), you might want to mount it vertically (giving you side to side vibration)

      Mounting the motor at a 180 degree position to what it is currently at could also help. The vibrations could then cause stuck particles to be propelled out of the holes more than they do currently.

    Have the bottom on hinges and the top resting on magnets repelling each other . It will vibrate more freely

    The vibratory is still an eccentric cam. So it can throw backwards or forwards and also up or down. You can try rotating 180 degrees same bolt holes or underneath. This is how mining screens are set up

    Cool. Im working on building one. I have the sifter frame built but not the stand. I was thinking the sawsaw would be enough. But maybe bought would be better? Both shaking and back and forth? They might not get stuck then. Im learning alot when im gonna get mine operational. Thanks so much.

      I'm not sure which is better, the back and forth seems to be better at moving things down the screen where as the vibration can cause things to move in a circle at times. I think starting cheap and moving up works unless this is for a professional business.

    for these motors, you will want to start them on maximum, and turn them down as you like so long as they don't stall, as if they are on and just sit there, they are burning themselves out.
    Better longevity to keep them on high to start to get them in motion.
    They are set up kind of like old fans, High is always the on setting, then medium, then low.

    Dear Sir,
    I respect your work and video. Great job !!
    If you do not mind i would love to give you some tip how to get a better screening and oscilation in order to have better and long life times on that screen / vibro feeder.
    First of all the vibration motor you are using is not 100Wat. We are manufacturing that motor in Turkey. That motors has 3 different cengrifugal force options. If it has 22-25 ish kilogram-force than that motor is probably 25wat.
    But if that motor has 40-45 ish kgf or 60-65 ish kgf than that motor is probably 50wat. Same housing, same feet mounting sizes..etc.
    To select correct motor, you need to sum weight of screen, base frame weight and the total material which will pass over the screen per minute. This will give you a expamle that how much kilogram-force your motor will need minimum per minute.
    Lets say your screen + base frame + material per minutes = 25kg
    In this case your motor is correct.
    For oscialtion the machine I suggest you add there our oscilation units to have more life time for the machine.

      I'm not familiar with motors and I can only go with the description given on amazon which says 100w amzn.to/3d2tsVI
      I had to dial down the motor as it had well more power than I needed really. The only issue I have is that the material I put on the screen would spin around back toward the top. I'm actually in the process of redesigning this but haven't got around to making the changes yet. I still think using the recip saw worked a bit better as it moved the entire tray and everything seemed to move as expected. The problem is control which is limited due to the trigger being almost an on/off switch.

      No everything is good, if you check my channel I have some time lapse videos and that is the flash of the camera in that box. It is a bright flash so it is really hard to keep all the light in the box.

    I wonder if you can get a vibration motor that only vibrates in one plane to better simulate the reciprocation movement that your system seems to be optimized for....

      I think with this upgrade I might have gained a tool to help with using a recip saw. The controller attached to a plug in saw might do the trick so I have more control on the speed. Testing it again and I think the vibration might be too rough.

    I say use 1/8" the whole way through and if worms get into the sifted castings, put them in your garden. Your bin will recover in a few days.

    The wieghts can be adjusted in the motor ends to set vibration intensity. May or may not help.

      I think the vibration was fine except the material would move in a circle going back up the sides instead of down the ramp.

    What sort of setup does the brockwood sifter use? I cant find any pics of the control box online. From the website, it uses a 1/3hp motor, belt driven crank shaft, tie rod ends, and hime joints.

      I'm not sure what they are using to move the shaker. It is why I keep trying different things to mimic it.

      I wasn't sure but if you watch my next video on Bin 2 I think the vibration is too much and too many worms are sticking to the aluminum screen which didn't happen before. But I think this gave me an idea to use the same speed controller with a plug in recip saw so I can control the speed. Just need to pick one up.

    I know this will make more work to get the Worms out, but how about leveling out the grate instead of having the slant, and go with 1/8th inch all the way? I think with your vibration motor that might work.

      I can change the angle but I don't have a spare section of 1/8 inch and I would probably want to order just a longer section as well so it doesn't rattle.

      They are two different size holes but both are the same size (2ft x2ft). I ordered them off Ebay years ago and they only track the last year of orders so I'm not sure which company I ordered from. I do have more videos on the compost sorter.     Are you familiar with the YT channel Captain Matt's Worms? He's got a very similar sifter that he uses. He separates the 'just castings' that go thru the smaller screen and the 'castings + cocoons' that go thru the larger screen. He scoops a bunch of material in, then uses a thin piece of wood that's about as wide as the sifter is so he can slow down the material and help the sift happen

      The machine he has is what I based this on mine was a couple hundred mainly for the perforated sheet compared to thousands.

      My comment was mostly aimed at pointing out the thin piece of wood he uses to help sift.
      Your big pieces shake off and move down to the "large piece bucket" very fast. I think you'd get better results with less rounds of running your material over the machine if you actually slow down the falling of the pieces. I do think my suggestion might make your worms-falling-thru problem worse tho...

      Purchased via Amazon. Here are some referral links to the parts I used. I have to admit the motor works really well but the rotation of the castings didn't work very well as they would reach the side them go back up the ramp.

    What about mounting the motor on the side, would that change the shaking motion?

      If I had more clearance it might work but I'm afraid the shaking in that direction will start hitting the wood side supports. I also think the screen needs to move forward to get the material to slide if unless it is very dry.

      The screen was purchased on eBay as I couldn't find anything local that was reasonably priced. Most wanted 500+ to make one screen.

      I purchased these off ebay but I'm not sure which company as eBay doesn't have information going that far back on my account. The purchase was of perforated aluminum in a 24x24 inch square. I have two sizes 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch. I'm sure there are others selling on ebay today.

    That is not faster than a simple non motorized table top version. Not your fault, i don't think these designs work at all. A large trommel or a table top sliding version are the two options

    Your tilt I think is too much. Maybe if you lower the tilt a bit, the castsing will have more time over the screens

      It is but the idea is to make it as quick as possible. I'm sure having them dig down via the light method over an hour is not fun for them either.
