There are many reasons why Seo Taiji is considered the foundation of today's K-pop. It's impossible to explain them all, but here are a few of them.
    1. When he debuted in 1992 with the group Seotaiji & Boys, he adopted the rap and hip-hop styles that were emerging as a global trend as the group's characters. It was very rare in 1992 for the Korean major music scene to see trendy elements from foreign music industries almost simultaneously, because of the emotional differences between Asia and the U.S./Europe, and because telenetworks were not popularized in the 1990s, foreign music trends were only for a few early adopters or enthusiasts. However, after "Seotaiji & Boys," the Korean major music industry became focused on quickly adopting global trends, which contributed to the growth of subsequent K-pop rookies into stars that met the standards of global music fans.
    2. Although it wasn't Seo Taiji's intention, his music was very popular among teenagers at the time. Before Seotaiji & Boys debuted, there was a stereotype in Korea that pop music should be for almost everyone, regardless of age or gender. In particular, before their debut, the biggest audience for the Korean pop music scene was adults. However, after Seotaiji & Boys, the biggest audience for the Korean pop music scene has been teenagers.
    3. 'Seotaiji & Boys' were influenced by MTV at the time and actively utilized music videos in their activities. Prior to that time, music videos were only a supplementary tool for musicians' music and were of low quality. However, since 'Seotaiji & Boys', music videos have emerged as a very important content in the music industry.
    4. One of the issues that Seo Taiji is considered to have revolutionized the Korean music industry the most is that he contributed significantly to the abolition of the pre-censorship system. South Korea went through a painful history in the mid-20th century called the Korean War. In the name of maintaining social security, the post-war South Korean government placed significant controls on human rights and freedoms. The art industry was no different. When Seotaiji & Boys released their fourth studio album, some of their music was pre-censored and they were advised to change the lyrics, so in defiance, they added noise to the lyrics or even removed the lyrics altogether. This rallied many of their fans, who organized protests and made the news. Ultimately, this helped secure the abolition of the pre-censorship system, which was under discussion in the National Assembly at the time.
    5. After Seotaiji & Boys ended, Seo Taiji returned to the Korean music industry as a solo artist in 2000. At the time, the station's music broadcasting system was of very poor quality and was unable to properly support artists' live performances. Seo proposed pre-recordings as an alternative, and worked with MBC, which was the most friendly station to him, to make most of his broadcasts pre-recorded. Other stations other than MBC reacted against this, and they tried to use the power of the media to undermine Seo Taiji's influence and socially bury him, and the keyword "kill Seo Taiji" was all over the news at the time. However, pre-recorded broadcasts, which Seo Taiji pioneered, have become an essential format for K-pop singers today to deliver high-quality broadcast performances to their fans.
