My mom used to love Mortal Kombat when she was younger. Actually, she told me that it was one of the three games she’d play before i was born. The other two being one of the Ogre Battle (or Tactics Ogre, still not sure which one is more of a fitting name), and the amazing SNES JRPG Chrono Trigger
Shujinko didn't fail his quest. He actually completed it, which was exactly what Onaga wanted. He was a spirit at the time, since he was previously killed by Shao Khan, and wanted Shujinko to collect the Kamidogu so he could merge the realms. This would bring back the One Being, a deity that existed before everything else, who was eventually split into the realms that exist. Once Reptile got turned into Onaga's new body in his Deadly Alliance ending, Onaga took the Kamidogu from Shujinko, who thought he was on a quest from the Elder Gods to save the realms. That's why the game talks about Deception. Deception, and to an extent Armageddon, are driven by the One Being trying to reform, which would end all of reality. As for MK10 being less colorful, I believe it reflects the serious nature of the story. In the original timeline, Shao Khan is still alive, and most of Earthrealm's heroes are still alive. This means Shinnok has to settle for a tournament in order to conquer Earthrealm and absorb it into the Netherrealm. This would bring the One Being closer to resurrection, of course, showing its influence over even a fallen Elder God. But, Liu Kang kicks Shinnok's ass and sends the Netherrealm packing. In the new timeline, most of Earthrealm's fighters are dead and serving as Revenants under Shinnok, while Outworld is in the middle of a civil war because of Shao Khan being killed at the end of MK9. This lets Shinnok launch a full-scale invasion of Earthrealm, complete with an army of demons. It's just about as bleak a situation as possible for Earthrealm in this game. Shinnok's Arcade ending even has him conquer all the realms and merge them, intentionally bringing back the One Being. That ending basically tells us he was being mentally influenced by this dead entity. So, MK10 has a lot at stake, which, again, I believe is the reason for the darker color tones. Sorry for the long post, but the lore and background machinations in MK are very interesting to me.
Johnny Cage in the 1st and 2nd MK games was actually modelled after Jean Claude Van Damme from bloodsport. And not sure why exactly; but watching Kitana turn into a ravenous rabbit then attacking made me immediately think of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. And Tiger electronics had made a card barcode scanner MK3 handheld game. When I played that it confused the crap out of me due to having to use certain cards for certain moves for certain characters. Street Fighter also had one which I also have. Fun fact; Carey-Hiroyuki Tagawa also portrayed Shang Tsung in live action in MK Legacy for 3 episodes. He also portrayed Heihachi in both live action Tekken movies.
To me the peak was Ultimate MK3 it had all the characters from the previous games up to that point and added 3 new ninjas Noob Saibot, Rain, and Ermac its also the first time you can play as Shao Khan, Goro, Kintaro, and Motaro, Motaro in MK Armageddon kind of blows I still have that game but my ps2 is broken
Fun fact, quan chi’s first ACTUAL appearance was not the games, but the cartoon spelt with a K: defenders of the realm where all he does is make this goofy freeze frame worthy face, then peaces out until 4 came out…our villain everyone
A flawless retrospective. To think I've been playing MK in its inception, I can see why it's still going strong 30 years later. I really appreciatetaking us into your journey with your experience with MK. A crown jewel of both fighting games and pop culture. All there's left to say is excellent!
Jesas Khrist Deception, I was casually listening to this retrospective when I heard the name of the main character. Shujinkou (主人公) in Japanese LITERALLY translate to "protagonist". I'm simultaneously proud I caught that and pissed I now know this trivia.
Here's the kicker: Shujinko, aka Protagonist, is approached by a spirit who gives him his mission supposedly on behalf of the Elder Gods. The spirit is actually an avatar summoned by Onaga, the dead Dragon King, to set up events so he could be resurrected. The spirit's name? Damashi. aka "Deceive"...in a game called Mortal Kombat: Deception.
I like mk3 the most, but deception was really damn good. Chess kombat was addictive af to me as I love chess. Playing story mode was so relaxing to me, it is a great game to stream even to this day, can't go wrong with it. Mk3 gave me bursts of action and fun, but I could definitely sit there and stream deception for hours.
Great video! I remember when the first Mortal Kombat came out in arcades and just blew everyone's mind. I always thought it was kind of weird how the graphics style would change a little from game to game, but overall I was always impressed by the visuals... until they went 3D. MK4 turned my off of the series as a whole, to the point where I just never got back into it. Shout out to Kyle!
Honestly, mk 9 was one of my favorites, I loved how your character kept their injuries as they fought to where at the end they're standing there with chunks of their body missing and whatnot, lol. Seems like after that game they'd mostly spray blood but most look like sweaty angry ppl.
Batman doesn’t kill…but he brutally lays the smackdown on anyone in his path to the point where the unfortunate j-bronne is in a hospital, hanging on for dear life.
I still remember when I first played Mortal Kombat on Genesis. I hadn't ever played it at the arcade, partly because I've always hated playing fighting games at the arcade because of having to use a crappy joystick that doesn't register anything properly. So when I did get the chance to play Mortal Kombat, which involved some exploitation of an incident to convince my mom to let me rent it, I was highly disappointed by the low level of violence. Yes, it was still more violent than most other games I'd played, but compared to all the rumors I had heard of the game at the time, and without having experienced the arcade original, I came to the conclusion that all the hype over the game's violence was heavily over exaggerated.
I played in the arcade because I was poor, we were always behind on the game consoles as well when we were barely getting an snes people already had n64 and playstation, then we got the N64 and the ps2 came out, then we finally caught up with the ps2 and the ps3 came out so we gave up after getting a ps3 and xbox360
@@rockk9753 On the plus side, staying a generation behind means most games will be cheaper to buy, and you can research the console's entire library in advance, instead of buying a console early then hoping for the best in the years to come.
The first Mortal Kombat game I’ve played was Mortal Kombat (2011) on the Xbox 360 and it was fantastic. And I was also too young to play that game at the time, I was about 7 or so. But I still love Mortal Kombat in all of its Gory Glory.
As an 3D era lover and advocate, I never understood why 3D era haters or people who haven't played the 3D games would call the new characters "generic" when characters from the klassic era like Johnny, Sonya, kano, Jax (to a lesser extent) and especially Liu Kang are as generic as they come in their debut games, Johnny is every white Hollywood actor ever, Sonya is basically just "Girl" kano was basically "ever bad guy grunt ever," Jax is bodybuilder/pro wrestler, and Liu Kang is 1 of a million Bruce lee ripoff/copycats. Now if you were to say, read their bios or see their arcade endings they might become more interesting, but guess what I'm about to say. Go on, guess. The same think would happen if people did the same thing for the 3D era characters!! Lets use Ashrah as an example. Some people have called Ashrah a "Raiden Clone" which outside of the color theme and ONE move, is not true. and if people read Ashrah's bio and story, they'd learn that Ashrah is a Demon from the netherrealm who wants to cleanse her soul and and escape damnation. there is a lot more to her story but everyone else can look that up. but this is just one example of many 3d era characters that are very interesting if you look past the surface of "Character select" (RANT OVER) Also to talk about the "Bad voice acting" I understand it can be annoying to some but remember, unlike NRS, Midway wasn't a major game developer, they had to work a much smaller budget, most videogames of this era had bad, Cheesy voice acting, there are some exceptions but those are exceptions.
I never played X for pretty much the exact same reason you did: I didn't have an Xbox or Playstation from that generation. Hell, the only reason I was able to play MK9 was cuz I bought a 360 super cheap during a black Friday sale towards the end of that console's life. What can I say, I've mostly been a Nintendo fanboy most of my life. Though when the next game, MK11, did actually come out on a console I owned, I went and watched a supercut of all of X's story cutscenes on youtube to prepare myself. Because, yes, I actually am that kind of dork who actually plays these games for the story.
Honestly I don’t know why they don’t do another mk vs dc universe. I think they’ve gotten pretty good at making the modern mk gameplay as well as injustice’s take in it with dc characters. Both series are do well so it almost seems like a no-brainer to try again. I feel like this time they could actually give marvel vs capcom the run for their money that they were originally intending with mk 8
MK Armageddon was the first mortal kombat I saw. My brothers wouldn’t let me play with them so I would sit and watch. When I did play the game my main was Liu Kang.
Mortal Kombat really brings such nostalgia to my childhood, and I’ve played all of these games (most of them). Now that they are recently releasing a brand new rebooted game, and calling it Mortal Kombat 1.
This video is amazing. Your content is top notch. I'm actually low key crying a little, so much memories and your experience seems so familiar to mine... Thanks for your work...
Mortal Kombat 2011 where you play in the story mode as Liu kang and have to fight shao kahn is still to this day the hardest level of any game i have ever played in my life, i wasn’t much of a controller thrower but if i was i definitely would’ve went through a few and maybe a tv or 2
I wish they would release the Mortal Kombat games into Collections. Kombat Collection 1 would have Mk 1,2,3,4 (The Gold Version), Mythologies, and Special Forces. Kombat Kollection 2 would have Shaolin Monks, Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon, Vs DC Universe, and Mortal Kombat (2011)
Your perspective of the MK 11 story is opinion of course but I think honestly if you think about it, the multiverse reset aspect of it is the best way to reintroduce the 3D characters again which does appear to be a thing Ed Boon has said recently. Story wise I imagine it’s not a trilogy and MK12 will continue the story. If we see characters like Havok for example reappear and some others that would need a bigger redesign return I think that’s a strong move as well as in a way reopening the door for future games to bring back Onaga in a new way since timeline wise from MK9 it could make sense. However when you mentioned the MK movie and everything to do with it Hell yes. No one can replace Cage or Shang from that movie. They were perfect and it’s an easy guilty pleasure movie I’ve watched countless times. Great video though. Loved the content
mkx being so low makes me so sad bc it was basically my first hands on experience with the 2D style of mortal Kombat and I loved it so much and I learned so many combos and got really good at it. But overall Mkx is an amazing game but it sucks how bad the color palette was.
MK armagedon was packed with effing content! If it was released now, some characters will be locked by paywall, kreate a fighter is non existent or if it was it's heavily reliant on micro transactions, and motor kombat would be released as a stand alone game priced at $60
I know I am the only person who feels this way, but MK 4 is my favorite MK game of all time. I loved the chessy endings, and I was also really good at it. Beat the game with every character on Ultimate II and took the time to actually memorize the move sets for each character.
Great, now I can try one of those fa-alities! 😂 My brother was my rival in video games. With Shao Lin Monks I was always Kung Lao or Scorpion while he was always Liu Kang or Sub-Zero though I was always player 1. Would've been nice if they would've followed up with Shao Lin Monks 2, that first game was awesome.
Seeing someone rank MKX so low is actually so surprising to me, I guess it’s because from a gameplay stand point MKX is so much more fun than mk11 for me personally with running, meter management and having simpler variations. While MK11 has one of the worst comeback mechanics I have ever seen in a fighting game, worse story imo and quantity over quality cosmetics with micro transactions slapped on that you have to grind in towers for hours to even get for free. I could go on but honestly through all it’s faults I love both games and they both have something that keeps me coming back, hoping MK12 which is “soon” becomes the best it can possibly be
I kinda need to correct ya on MK4 MK4 was actually highly praised for its graphics. Specifically, the arcade version. It was running on powerful custom hardware called Zeus, ten times stronger than the N64, running what was at the time, extremely detailed graphics and running at a fairly consistent 60 FPS. And it came out in 1997, making it pretty revolutionary. To put it simply, it was _too_ good to the point where all other ports of the game had to be massively scaled down just to run it at 60 FPS. To use the N64 version, while the best looking of the home ports, is unfair and just shows the difference of power between the original and the ports. Combos are still in MK4, they're just no longer character specific dial-a-combos. Everyone shares the same High Punch to High Kick combo and a few others, but how you implement those is largely up to you and offers a bit more freedom compared to previous games. It also introduced a solution to infinites in the form of Maximum Damage, which would instantly interrupt combos that hit a certain threshold of damage. MK4 also stood out for introducing Weapon Kombat, as each character had their own weapon to compliment their movesets, ranging from melee to ranged arms. Also, something else to note: MK4 was part of Midway's big push to advertise Mortal Kombat as more than a fighting game within the main series. This was meant to be the conclusion of a bigger plot that was started in the tie-in prequel, Mythologies Sub-Zero and in fact, three of the newcomers in MK4 were featured in that game as well as a couple backgrounds
I liked Stryker in 3. I also liked MK4 and Reiko. When they gave some Shao Kahn mystery to him, I was excited. I understand why they undid it cause people didn't care for him. I definitely hated him in the 2020 movie.
I remember hearing back when deadly alliance came out that Liu Kang was killed off because Ed Boon really didn't like the character to begin with. Could have been just a baseless rumor though.
As a kid I loved to play as Goro agents my sisters on the first ever playstation. The only reason why I chose him was because he has 4 arms so I would do the input to hold them and beat them with the extra arms. I was a dirty cheater with him but I lost most of the time. But I had fun.(Especially when me or one of my sisters pulled off a fatality.
The story will continue in this month’s Mortal Kombat 1. This game will usher in a new era for the franchise, taking place in Liu Kang’s new timeline. A lot of the characters; past, present and future, are all here (well, not all of them).
45:55 It sounds like such a good idea on paper. Marvel vs. Capcom did well, so why wouldn't Mortal Kombat vs DC? It's too bad it didn't do well and the fatalities weren't as good.

I know I am the only person who feels this way, but MK 4 is my favorite MK game of all time. I loved the chessy endings, and I was also really good at it. Beat the game with every character on Ultimate II and took the time to actually memorize the move sets for each character.
On point I'm older but u are right the first 2 just push buttons till someone loses the third tho it was time to learn, Shaolin monks best one ever.
Great, now I can try one of those fa-alities! 😂
My brother was my rival in video games. With Shao Lin Monks I was always Kung Lao or Scorpion while he was always Liu Kang or Sub-Zero though I was always player 1. Would've been nice if they would've followed up with Shao Lin Monks 2, that first game was awesome.
MK2 & MK9 are my all time favorites in the franchise.
Cool mortal Kombat love the complete trilogy
Thank you, Kyle
TOASTY
Seeing someone rank MKX so low is actually so surprising to me, I guess it’s because from a gameplay stand point MKX is so much more fun than mk11 for me personally with running, meter management and having simpler variations. While MK11 has one of the worst comeback mechanics I have ever seen in a fighting game, worse story imo and quantity over quality cosmetics with micro transactions slapped on that you have to grind in towers for hours to even get for free. I could go on but honestly through all it’s faults I love both games and they both have something that keeps me coming back, hoping MK12 which is “soon” becomes the best it can possibly be
I kinda need to correct ya on MK4
MK4 was actually highly praised for its graphics.
Wow someone else who appreciates Deception as much as me
I liked Stryker in 3. I also liked MK4 and Reiko. When they gave some Shao Kahn mystery to him, I was excited. I understand why they undid it cause people didn't care for him. I definitely hated him in the 2020 movie.
Mavado was actually a pre damn good character, other than Quan Chi he was my go to for that game.
My first mk was 9 and know I'm in love with the franchise.
mk is one of the first fighting games and i became a die-hard fan ever sense
Anyone else feel bad that Jade basically dies in every MK story mode?
Thank you for nostalgia
Thanks, Kyle.
I remember hearing back when deadly alliance came out that Liu Kang was killed off because Ed Boon really didn't like the character to begin with. Could have been just a baseless rumor though.
Man no one could remember fatalities back then we had them written down on a piece of paper after seeing them in magazines
As a kid I loved to play as Goro agents my sisters on the first ever playstation. The only reason why I chose him was because he has 4 arms so I would do the input to hold them and beat them with the extra arms. I was a dirty cheater with him but I lost most of the time. But I had fun.(Especially when me or one of my sisters pulled off a fatality.
i wasnt born around this time. but when i got a genesis classic and played mortal kombat it was fun
Mkm sub zero is my favorite mk game most ppl just don't understand how to play it because it's a great game
big fan of the three original mortal kombat games
MKX is actually my all time favorite fighting game
All you gotta do to cheese Shao Kahn in 3 was crouch freeze, run up and uppercut, back off. Repeat.
7 year old me was obsessed.
The story will continue in this month’s Mortal Kombat 1.
This game will usher in a new era for the franchise, taking place in Liu Kang’s new timeline. A lot of the characters; past, present and future, are all here (well, not all of them).
Waffle, waffle, waffle, waffle, waffle, waffle, waffle, waffle, it’s so cool❤
45:55 It sounds like such a good idea on paper. Marvel vs. Capcom did well, so why wouldn't Mortal Kombat vs DC? It's too bad it didn't do well and the fatalities weren't as good.
Subscribed. Love and Algorithm from Detroit
thanks Kyle
Wow also thanks kyle
Ranking X below MKvsDC is wild
THANK YOU for this!!!! :)
You forgotvmortal kombat 1 which came out in 2023
The PS3 version of MK9 has Kratos as a playable character. You should also look at the alternate ending for MK11's dlc.
