What a beautiful thought! I bet your dad would like to hear the Berceuse de Jocelyn too. My voice is no good but hopefully, if I meet your dad, we can hear some music together.
My vocal instructor told me to look her up, since I'm a soprano and, like Ms. Norman, I don't have that tiny tinkling soprano voice, either. (As my teacher would say, my voice will never be a tiny bird fart of a sound.) =) I've never heard her before tonight, and I'm in awe. She's beautiful and her voice is divine. If I only end up with half that talent, I will be content. She's amazing.
The only one who gives the aria the delicacy of a young girl. Perfect rendition. Many singers can't make the simple melody sparkle and give a dull performance with too much force.
Both Jessye Norman's version and Enya's version are beautiful in different ways. Miss Norman's diction is so crystal clear that you can easily understand every word. A great artiste.
What a voice. I cry uncontrollably when I listen to this shining gem. RIP dear Jessey. Sing with the angels and charm heaven with your heavenly voice.❤❤❤❤❤❤
How 30 people (at the time of writing this) can dislike this performance beggars belief! Rant over.. Wow, Miss Norman's performance here is exceptional and as near to perfection, as you will hear. Power, combined with wonderful control, diction and the most amazing technique make this recording exceptional. Please Lord, make the angelic host sound as good as this!!!
Until I discovered this song by Jessye and Elina - Joan Sutherland is the only other person I had heard sing it. I loved the music and Joan's trills but I couldn't understand the words. Now that I have heard Jessye, Elina and Enya - it is now my second favorite aria. Naturally Jessye singing Delilah's aria from Samson and Delilah is my favorite.
Absolute perfection. This beautiful song from “The Bohemian Girl” is made even more lovely by Ms. Norman’s performance. She has left us now but her recordings and filmed performances remind us all of what an amazing talent she was. The incomparable Jessye Norman.
I am currently a music major who is struggling with the transition into classical music and Music Theory....but watching HEARTWARMING gorgeous performances by my hero Jessye Norman gives me so much motivation!!!!!
I saw Jesse Normans performance on television and it sent cold shivers up my spine- itstill does. Since then I have tried to obtain a recording of it, without success. imagine my delight when I saw the link on utube. Thank you for giving me that thrill again - whata wonderful voice! fred
Superb aria from a truly great singer a lovely melody by Irishman William Balfe a long forgotten composer who is now sadly overlooked so this aria is his legacy. Thank you for posting.
I've never ever heard any other rendition of this beautiful song than Joan Sutherland's as I grew up with it playing in my home. This one is also beautiful and very pure and her enunciation is easier to understand. I think it's ok to love more than one rendition of something so beautiful for different qualities.
I come from a long line of music teachers, singers, dancers, dance teachers and fine artists etc. My personal feeling when it comes to any kind of art, is there is such a wide range of personal taste and ability that really, as long as someone likes it, it's art. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Like wine. It could be vinegar, but if someone calls it wine, then to them ... it is. Personally, the cheaper and sweeter the wine, the more I like it. ;-) I like amateur art because not everyone gets to that high point in their lives and if we all had to wait until then, there would be no art. If I didn't enjoy amateur art, I would have to quit my job as a ballet teacher because I would be so hard on my students, they would completely lose the love of it. Enya isn't my cup of tea, but apparently many others love her. Joan Sutherland is mine
And Cecilia Bartoli is mine. And Jessye Norman. And Angela Brown etc etc etc but not, never, ever, Enya or people like Enya who attempt to sing operatic arias. It's an insult to the composer.
No problem. Each to his own. Maybe I just have a higher pain threshold especially since I have a son studying a Music degree and I have had to endure a lot more "pain" in this regard. He's also a fabulous tapper but while he was learning it was a nightmare to listen to. The composer is dead. He doesn't care who sings his stuff. I'm just happy when I hear people trying to sing instead of not singing because there are better voices than theirs.
Crumbs! I have four musical children and I've suffered, too! Nobody can like exactly the same music as another person, but I really do think that operatic arias should be left to trained singers. Enya, indeed! It's as ludicrous as Nina Simone singing 'My Man's Gone Now' from Porgy and Bess, which obviously you will know is one of the REALLY difficult arias. But, nothing loath, Ms. Simone did indeed record a frightful version of this. OOOOOOH you listen to it and then listen to Angela Brown or Audra McDonald singing. You know what I mean. LOL
I just LOVE this aria and Ms Norman is sublime in this rendition and encapsulates all that the composer was trying to create. Her diction is perfect and every word can be clearly heard. I love Dame Joanie in this too, but you really need to have a libretto to follow the words if you don't want to just listen to the glorious sound she makes. But BOTH these incredible divas move me to tears when they sing this beautiful music. Brava Ms Norman.
She brings such exquisite individuality to everything she does. Lovely to hear Miss Norman singing such a beautiful aria by a sadly neglected composer.
Jessye Norman is so brilliant!!!! I aspire to perform, if even an ounce, as magnificent as this inspirational woman!!!! I LOVE HER. I am not usually much of a fanatic but for Jessye Norman I am.
oh my gosh. i've never seen this before. thank you so much for put on this...i can't believe...its so beautyful. brava jessye. again, again and again...
Born in 1925, in my early years I mostly heard this song (& similar ones of the period) as a parody by comedians & such like. Not until later years did I appreciate the sheer beauty of it.
The most amazing singing of the 20th Century.
This is an example of how a comparatively plain and simple aria can become extremely artful through magnificient musicianship.
A perfect example.
The one and only Jessey Norman.
When you see my dad in heaven his name is lewis sing this to him it will make his day.
What a beautiful thought! I bet your dad would like to hear the Berceuse de Jocelyn too. My voice is no good but hopefully, if I meet your dad, we can hear some music together.

After replaying it 5 times in my laptop, my only question is: "How can a mortal sing like this?".............Thanks for such a treat!
Both Jessye Norman's version and Enya's version are beautiful in different ways. Miss Norman's diction is so crystal clear that you can easily understand every word. A great artiste.
Jessye lifts this simple air to the realm of the divine!
What a voice. I cry uncontrollably when I listen to this shining gem. RIP dear Jessey. Sing with the angels and charm heaven with your heavenly voice.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yes
The most gracious and wonderful rendition of The Bohemian Girl by the fabulous, the greatest Jessye Norman
Why is Jesse Norman not seen as the greatest opera singer of this era? She surley has earned it
She truly earned it....
Maravillosa canción y voz.!!

The beauty of this little gem just becomes more and more improbable over the years.
Brava!!!! What a voice she had. Such a sad loss to the world of music.
With that voice and diction Miss Norman could sing almost anything and make it beautiful and touching.
AustrianAdrian i realy like this song the words are so meaningful lf you just listen
Great ...!
AustrianAdrian well, not Lucia! Lol. Jk. So beautiful. I always enjoy her!
Perfection Tone Diction all superb Beautifully sung Such power in that voice

This woman's voice just bowls me over. It's like liquid gold.
More than 100 years after this music was written, it still moves us. Bravo!

My God! she looks like some kind of Goddess - and when she sings!!!
She manages to combine a majestic presence with delicacy and humility
She was…..

Henry Webb
Stunningly beautiful!!! What a feast for the senses!!!!

Beautiful. What a voice!

When our love of perfection imbues the art we flourish in.

+Stellamarie Kruize But Enya's? How has she got the cheek to attempt an operatic aria? She can't sing!!!

Most beautiful interpretation of marble hall I've ever seen.
I had the great good fortune in the 80s to attend one of her recitals. Her voice and precision are incomparable.
Somewhat more than magnificent! Exquise, merveilleux, celestieux et plus.

How she can pull back such a huge voice to do the most exquisite appoggiaturi and trill is simply amazing! 😍
QUE EMOCION, UN TEATRO LLENO QUE "SE VIENE ABAJO" POR LA BELLEZA DE ESTA GRAN SOPRANO, SU VOZ ES COMO UN HURACAN DE ARMONICOS.
No words for this She's so wonderful

This has brought wonderful memories of my late father it was his favourite song.
She brings such exquisite individuality to everything she does. Lovely to hear Miss Norman singing such a beautiful aria by a sadly neglected composer.
I fell in love with this song in 1960 in London. It was not until a few years ago did I listen again with TH-cam/Internet. Thanks
