re-reading nostalgic books is so real! after only reading a handful of books over the course of maybe 5 years, i reread the percy jackson series and, oh boy did it remind me how much fun reading is. i’ve now read about 120 books in the span of nearly 2 years after going through such a major slump for a long time.

It's definitely that connection that is my main reason for slumps. I almost go through a reading speed dating to try and find one that grabs me, and sometimes that takes a LONG time, which can be frustrating. I also know immediately if it's a connection too lol. My remedy is usually switching to my other reading love, graphic novels. If that doesn't work, I take a break until I miss having a book next to me all the time, lol.
Adrienne Young was one of my best finds last year, I ate up her entire catalog 😍. Definitely added some from your recs here, especially the short section. Those help a lot, too, less pressure in a way because even if you hate it, you really didn't waste any time.

I've set my reading goal to a lower number this year because I want to tacle the bigger books in my tbr! Usually a goofy, dumb, easy to read romance gets me out of a slump! I find I get in a slump if I read to much of the same genre back to back, so I like to vary.

i experience reading slumps pretty similarly, but i’ve found that being a college student also contributes to a slump. like i’m currently reading amazing books for my literature courses (like the bell jar and handmaids tale) but after doing those assigned readings i just. don’t want to read for pleasure anymore

I loved the lighting, it was a vibe honestly! And I’m jealous of the snow, hope to see it some day, especially after experiencing the lovely summer in Seoul last year haha.
As for slumps, these were absolutely amazing recommendations, thank you so much! Often I fall into slumps either because, like you said, mental fatigue. Forcing myself to read a book that I know I should like but it’s not the right time. Or (and this is most often my case) reading several mediocre books back to back. It’s good to read mid books sometimes, I enjoy 3 stars but if they’re all back to back for several books, I find I lose steam/the motivation to keep reading. And it’s kind of funny (see: not) because I do this to myself subconsciously. Like I’m saving books I think I’ll adore (for when, who knows?) and pick up meh books instead.
Working on that this year and so far so good!
    Thanks again!!

These are such good tips. I’m pretty sure I’ve done the “read a book you’ve seen the adaptation of” before and it totally works. Also I read the Throne in the Dark series last year, possibly on your rec, and it had me giggling and kicking my feet the whole time. Then later that year after being in a total slump for about six months I saw there were two spinoff books I’d missed and it was so easy to pick them up and get right back into reading.
Also I knew you were talking about Little Thieves before you said it because I too have been waiting for this year to read it!
For what puts me in a slump: ADHD just deciding we don’t read books anymore, or mental health things; I read almost nothing for half of last year because I lost my fur baby and couldn’t do much more than grieve.

i like to read books written by people i already like for other reasons, in fact up until recently that was the only thing that could get me to buy a book. this ends up mostly being memoirs, or novels by youtubers (the Green brothers/Lindsay Ellis) so idk if it also has to do with the fact that i can clearly hear their voice in my head? but recently i decided i really wanted to start reading again, and i ended up picking acotar because of your videos! like you mentioned about retellings/books-turned-movies, it was so much easier to get through because i could just be like “yep this is what Cari said would happen!”

I had a slump recently - I had a magnetic attraction to mid books and read like five in a row, with the expected result.
How I got out was similar to a couple of the things you suggested. Rereads for sure - including one from adulthood - and shorter reads. Additional suggestions for shorties are Singing Hills Cycle by Nghi Vo, and Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers.
Another thing that's helped (and was suggested by an online friend) is "coffee table" books, books with minimal text and lots of pictures. Head to the library, and grab one with a topic that interests you. Ta-da! An easy completion.
Manga and graphic novels are also fun, quick reads, though i understand not everyone enjoys those.

I owe you my life for recommending T. Kingfisher. I read What Moves the Dead when you first talked abou it and have since read almost all of her other (non children) books since. They will always suck me in and she is so good at making all of her characters feel like real people. She also lives in my hometown and usually has a few things that are referencing so that’s just added fun for me.
Also! I just finished The Wild Huntress because of how yo talked about it in your November wrap up and finally got it from the library. I loved the ending because I love an unexpected ending but I did cry like a baby! 😅
Also, also, read Don’t Let the Forest in and I loved that ending so much, I understand why some people didn’t or were iffy about it. But oh my god something about that book sank into my soul and I have thought about it everyday since.
I needed to share these thoughts where someone has read these books and knows what I’m talking about, so thank you, for always giving reliable book recs 💙

Oh I loved those Magic Eye books when I was teen (I was teen in 90, I'm that old 🙈) But then they started kinda..hurt my brains, because I could seen those pictures even without trying, and then my eyes and mind went to arguing if there was picture or just pattern lol. And it switched rapidly between of those too, until it became very uncomfortable and I stopped with those books. It is same when there are those picture riddles like do you see a vase or kissing faces, and I see them both in same time and I started to feel nausea.
Anyway, back to topic what was reading slump, for me it just trying to finish book without actually understanding to words. I just read words but don't combine them with their meaning so books became just word practice for me without meaning. I had that after Christmas when I read a lot of books, but then I just today finished Psalm for the Wild-Builds and it gave me back my excitement for reading. I think reason, why I was having a minislump was me reading 500 page books and they felt so long, so when Psalm had only 173 pages it was bless, and it wasn't part of massive trigger warning series. I think I need to start doing that more often, every 400+ page books I read one shorter book.🤔

I'm on a no buy book ban this year in attempt to force me to read through my bookshelf, but that doesn't stop me from adding half these recs to my save-for-later-pile. Library books are still allowed! 😁 Six Crimson Cranes helped me out of a slump last year and T.Kingfisher is a new favorite author of mine.

I loved magic eye books when I was a kid. I am trying to get over a reading slump too.

Thank goodness I’m not the only one. I felt bad for putting down books I enjoyed at some point. I’m like a mix of reading and dnf’ing and not read for a long time, usually during the winter months cuz seasonal depression
