The black knife shapes is where the actual knifes would hang. That made it easy for the guards to see if one was missing. The same thing was done in the various workshops to make sure none of the tools went missing.
Where I worked we did much the same thing so people would know where the tools were supposed to go and to make it obvious when one wasn't where it belonged.
The Alcatraz tour is easily one of the coolest things you can ever visit in your life. You can literally feel the history as you walk around it. It should be on everyone's bucket list. I loved that tour when I went to San Fran and I hope to do the nighttime tour some day.
I used to be the night watchman on Alcatraz. I would be out there by myself all night. Yes it’s definitely haunted. It’s a whole different experience being the only one on the island all night.
I came home from work early one day, only to hear strange pounding and moaning noises coming from my wife's bedroom... Still to this day can't explain it... Weird man

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Adam for not putting music over your videos. I love hearing you, and the ambience of the location!! You are THE BEST on the WWW!!!!!!!!!!!
I went there about four years ago and it was an incredible sight to see. It was a great tour if you ask me. Everybody should go see it. Thank you for your great vlogs Adam. Keep up the great work.
I lived in San Francisco 23 years, went to alcatraz only once with friends for an evening tour. Once was more than enough. There are unseen and mysterious happenings there. I'm surprised, Adam, you didn't mention that long before the White man came and carnaged the area, the local Native Americans used the island for ceremonial purposes. The bay around that area is relatively shallow in places, and has rocky out croppings(your noting the small continuous wave). The currents there are extremely quick and can change without a moment's notice. On a beautifully clear day, those who can, take their pleasure sailboats out and cruise the bay around there. It can get crowded, but what a wonderful sight to behold. Jacob's "power" comment is right on point. Both of you are the best "Road Trip Companions"!!
Great video , we visited the island a few years ago , the self guided tour gets eerie when you find yourself just wandering around & end up on the yard alone lol , great video again , Adam
Very awesome bucket list for sure!!! Hi seagull 🤣. Every time I see San Francisco I think of full house and the Opening song from one they’re going over the Golden Gate bridge
Another nice "old Adam the Woo" video wich i loved so much. It`s good to see your back toy your old self. Much better than all those Disney vlogs.....thumbs up
Hard to believe that was your first trip to the Rock... You mentioned Al.Capone, they promote his cell at Eastern State Penitentiary bigtime during Haunt Season.
This was a fantastic vlog, Adam. I like seeing things that they don't show often in specials and such. Always wanted to go there, but never got the chance. Thank you for the wonderful video!!!
Have fun in SF. I was born and raised in Fremont, CA. There is so much stuff to do and see in the city. Thank you for giving me a chance to see my city again. I can never go back because I have ALS. It's keeping me pretty much at home seeing all the wonderful things through the lens of great folks like you. Peace be with you. See if you can find Grace Slick. I hear she's awesome and friendly. Thanks again Adam the Woo.
*The Rock* Starring Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery!!! Great film! Some people believe that the convict (played by Connery) who successfully escaped Alcatraz, is actually suppose to be James Bond 007! Being that he was an ex-MI6 agent being held as a political spy prisoner.
By far this has been one of my favorite things I have done in my traveling life. My wife and I so enjoyed this tour and the history on the island. It is amazing.
Awesome. The DailyWoo. I am glad that you enjoyed my City and my Home of S.F. I had visited Alcatraz myself and it is an amazing place! I am also happy that you enjoyed Alcatraz!
Adam, they paint the sizes and shapes of the knives and kitchen ware so that after being used by the inmate staff, when returned, the guard knows every piece was put back. If a spot remains open at the end of each shift, the guards know exactly which piece is missing, including the shape and size by its painted on silhouette. Prisons also do that with the tools inmates use when working.
Although I have been to San Francisco and rode down Lombard Street and went across the Golden Gate Bridge, I have not been to Alcatraz. They were not giving tours during that time period. I’ve been suggesting for you to go to Alcatraz since you first moved to LA. Thank you for finally finding the time to get there! It’s much appreciated!

I went there on an awards trip. I was in the military. It was San Francisco and I only saw Alcatraz at a distance. I saw the Golden Gate Bridge. I went on a Navy 🚢 ship. I fell down the stairs. I last went to Alcatraz when I was 10 or 11 with my Girl Scout Troop. Still remember the terrifying feeling of being locked into a solitary cell for 2 minutes. I want to go back, I’ve lived in SF since 1984, it looks like the National Park Service has totally improved things since c. 1974!

There was a gunwalk outside of the chow hall. Guards with Thompson submachine guns could open fire at any minute anything got out of hand.
