These machines never fail to strike a sense of fear and respect into me as I see them moving down the track, especially so swiftly. The amount of mass & momentum behind them is staggering

I agree. Like you said, it is amazing of all of the momentum that is behind it, especially when it is going faster speeds.

@@railfan509 I always think of the accuracy of the wheels on each car that keep the damn things on the track and the factories that cast them. The pounding the tracks take. The engineering that keeps the tracks in place without drilling to bedrock. I believe railroads are one of the most important inventions of Man. I love them.

They come up on you fast ,and if your walking in front of them on the tracks but facing away from them approaching , you cant hear them , I think because the sound is beside them and behind them .We almost got nailed one night ,Like drunken fools we were walking home from the bar on the tracks. Train came around the corner about an 1/8 th of a mile behind us ,we seen the headlight ,heard him lay on his horn and we jumped into the ditch,We couldnt hear him approaching because the waves on Lake Superior were splashing against the shore rocks. After we jumped it seemed like it was on us in about 30 seconds, he had to be going at least 50 m.p.h. Scary night.

Fortunately Japan is a smaller country geographically. These trains have multi-day runs of 1000 miles and more - gotta get that stuff where it’s going FAST. Easier to run multiple locomotives than it is to separate into separate trains or give it all to the truckers who have plenty to do as it is.
