Hello, fellow yarners! Thanks so much for taking your precious time to leave a comment here I just wanted you to know that I am reading them ALL, but I'm running around like an emotional support chicken with its head cut off getting ready for some holiday travel this week, so I'm going to be sloooow in responding to questions. Thanks so much for your patience and your kind words! p.s. Oscar says Hi
I'm from Germany. And I'm 61 years old. And now I see your Video. Thank you so much for showing. That's absolutely great and no money for the Yarn to mark this rows. I love your Videos. My english is not so good, but this Video is easy to understand. Thank you so much❤
I knitted my first raglan sweater when I was 16, almost 40 years ago. My mother used this kind of marker thread to guide me in marking the raglan. Cheap, versatile and always available.
I first learned about running markers from another of your videos, but they've been really helpful so far. How they work isn't completely intuitive to me, so I still get a little confused sometimes, but it's so convenient to not need other tools for counting rows. For tracking pattern repeats, I find it easiest to turn the instructions into a checklist and check off each row as I finish it.
I have always done this with crochet!! Never in my tiny brain did I think to do this for knitting!!! I'm about to cast on another sweater this afternoon. This is brilliant!
Nicole, you have saved us so much frustration by sharing this helpful tip with us. I will definitely be using this and sharing it with other knitters. Thank you. I love your smile.❤smile 😊
This has absolutely saved my brain since I first saw it on your channel. Especially casting on. That used to be so much harder than it should have been. ❤
Nicole I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again … this method of counting rows has totally changed my knitting life. 😍 I tie a little knot in the end of my marker and secure it with a lockable stitch marker so it does fall out.
I used running markers for my new swatches…. I use bulb stitch markers to help me count stitches, and stitch markers with a clicker, sometimes two or more clickers, to keep track “at the same time” rows
❤ Thank you! I have been using bits of yarn as my markers because I forget to mark them off or click my counter. I never thought of using longer pieces and run them through the item. 🤦🏼♀️ I was having trouble with my short piece pulling out last night and thought I’d sleep on it and try to figure a solution only to turn on TH-cam and it shows me what I needed. That’s kind of scary! The loop and marker will be a nerve saver for me. You really are a great instructor.
I learned this, back in my childhood, and sometimes I use it, but I still love my row counters. I remember, knitting a hat with many increases, and all my “little strings” got all tangled up 😮. I was so frustrated. That’s when I started to use stitch markers. ❤
OMG this is so incredible. Finally it was invented for me. Thank you so much. I love the way you give the explanations. I will tell my knitters friends. Happy knitting
this is interesting- I already do something similar, but with closed stitch markers along my needles (I put markers every 10 stitches, and have a distinct marker or two that I just slip over another stitch every row). it works quite well for keeping track of rows and long cast-ons. I might give this version a try, though, since it won't run into problems for lifelines, and looks like it'd be easier for increases & decreases- I have to be careful to keep track of the number of stitches between my counting markers if I'm doing a lot of inc/dec....and scrap yarn is so much cheaper than needing a lot of stitch markers.
@Knicoleknits I've definitely found myself scrambling for enough stitch markers when I have multiple projects going with long cast-ons! I guess I'll be pulling out the scrap yarn bin to see what possibilities I have there
Can’t wait to try this! I have a local knitting community and we definitely have trouble keeping track of our rows! Casting on a large number of stitches and counting over and over? Been there! 😅
I learned running markers from one of your previous videos. I just loooooove your tutorials, and your sense of humor 🧶😆 Seasons Greetings to you and yours ❤️🎄 Special cuddles to the adorable Oscar 💗🐾
I've been using running markers for a few months now and they're great! It may have been you who introduced this to me, but today's vidoe gave me even more ideas about how to use them.
Coolio!! I've used the method for counting basic rows, but never for all those other things!! I have used stich markers, but even they can fall out sometimes ... especially in that project bag/bin/drawer!! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much, Nicole! I want to knit more, to keep knitting to a good 104. After about 70, I think most of us ask ourselves Am I losin' it? And they say I have Macular REgeneration!!! But I need those lovely knits such as Petite Knits designs! Thank you so much for sharing this! I subscribed.
I am going to try out running markers. Normally upon until now I have used both pen and paper and stick counters and strategically placed stitch markers. Thank you for the good explaination of running markers.
I am loving these master classes! After watching your watching your swatching class, I was such a good girl, I actually made a swatch for a sweater I had just started. This was a first for me. I used running markers and you are right, measuring the 4 inches was so much easier than trying to count stitches. Thank you, thank you thank you for doing these. Please keep them up!❤❤❤
This is excellent!! I have not done anything with running markers ..! Still straining my eyes and brain 🤪 but love your channel.. learning so much! Thank you! So smart!❤
Hi, nice video. I have been using yarn threads as markers for years, mainly for different purposes. Most of the time I use them as a running marker when I am knitting in the round to keep track of the end of the row. And I always use it (horizontally) when I reach the armholes which makes it a lot easier to sow everything together.
Nice idea. Will have to give it a try. I place stitch markers along my work to track rows. Mainly on sleeves to keep track of decreases. Also when I cast on a lot of stitches I place a stitch marker after every 50 stitches so I don’t have to keep recounting.
Thank you for your video. I am going to try this. I currently use stitch markers and a row counter, but I am always losing my stitch markers somewhere.
Salve, il tuo suggerimento è molto interessante, io lo uso da tanti anni e lascio il segno ogni 10 righe se è a maglia rasata, per le trecce faccio la stessa cosa che fai tu 😘😘😘
I tried running markers, but didn’t do the tie down loop. Good to know. I just almost gave myself a nervous breakdown trying to learn ladder back jacquard. Looks simple, but I made a hash of it!!
@ I would really like to become proficient at it. The sock I was trying it on had 8-10 stitches between the stars, but I got muddled trying to figure out where I was on the chart and which were ladder back stitches. Phew!
Really great tips - and I just wondered how long your stitch markers should be to avoid running out of marker yarn when you still have knitting to go or casting on to go. It also dawns on me that working a horizontal marker, to avoid pulling the yarn marker too tight (similar to how not to pull floats too tight) to avoid scrunching up the fabric.
That's a good point about not pulling too tight. The length of the marker doesn't really matter all that much. If you run out, just start a new one at the same spot. You can anchor the tail into the fabric where you are, if you're worried about it coming out 😊
Im a 5 bar gate knitter which is great for straightforward rows but becomes tricky with pattern changes/increases/decreases and so on where i then adopt a lollipop🍭 type of addition to my bars. Pausing and coming back to that is a nightmare so next stop running markers is on my list! I'm sure I have some spare waste yarn somewhere 😂. Thank you for sharing. ❤
I’ve never used running stitches but I’m going to. I used those clicky things to count rows & another for repeat but sometimes do forget to click then need to recount. I’ve been using knit companion on iPad and phone but need to “sync” manually when traveling so I don’t have to carry both.😅
Learned that the strands between the stitches is called courses. I don't know that I've ever heard that before. Thank you! (Apparently, I need a refresher on my stitch anatomy :
Hallo liebe Nicole du bist die beste ❤ so etwas geniales habe ich noch nicht gesehen vielen dank und küss mal Oskar ich habe eine Sanny liebe Grüße von Christa aus ❤

I sometimes check off the instructions in my printed pattern too! With some projects, it takes more than one method to keep track 😀😋
This is amazing- I will be sitting again through it- until I retain all the information- I am so thankful that I saw you on TH-cam!
I'm dying!! 😂😂 You had me pee laughing at the washed/blocked gauge swatch!! Right?!?
Who wouldn’t use this tip once they know about it! Thank you!
I have always done this with crochet!! Never in my tiny brain did I think to do this for knitting!!! I'm about to cast on another sweater this afternoon. This is brilliant!
Amazing. I've been knitting for 65 yrs, but this is going to be a game changer! Thank you.😮❤

Vielen Dank aus Deutschland für die tolle Erklärung. Endlich sind die Zeiten von stãndigem Reihenzählen vorbei. So einfach und doch genial.
Thank you Nicole, what a fantastic tutorial. You always give such helpful information
What a brilliant way of tracking and I shall be using ❤
Thank you for this lesson which is going to improve my life ❣️
This is an absolute game changer!!
I've used this while weaving... Great idea for knitting

Brilliant!
Thank you for such a brilliant video. Can't wait to start using running markers. 🎉🎉🎉
I haven’t used running markers before but I certainly will from now on. Thank you!!
This is such a great idea! I use a combo of different gadgets to keep track of rows and repeats. Going to try this with my next project.
This is such a game changer for me. Thank you Thank you ❤
Such a simple concept!! Can’t wait to try it!

Absolutely, Im forsure adding it to my knittin habit. So easy peasy

I've used stitch markers for long cast ons, too. But I always found myself scrambling to find more as went. Yarn markers solved that for good! 😋
@Knicoleknits I've definitely found myself scrambling for enough stitch markers when I have multiple projects going with long cast-ons! I guess I'll be pulling out the scrap yarn bin to see what possibilities I have there
Nicole, You are the BEST teacher. I appreciate your videos very much. And I think you are Wonderful.
Aw, that means a lot to me! 😄

What a game changer. I’ve heard Of lifelines for lace knitting but never this. Thank you so much. So simple and effective! My kind of method.
I am absolutely going to use running markers 😍
Your sweaters are sooooo beautiful! Merry Christmas

Thank you so much! I appreciate this so much 🙏❤️
So great. Thank you!
I bet this will work for crochet rows/ decreases too.
I am excited to do it
It totally will! 😄
You sold me the first time I heard about markers and I agree - they are great! Thanks.
Coolio!! I've used the method for counting basic rows, but never for all those other things!! I have used stich markers, but even they can fall out sometimes ... especially in that project bag/bin/drawer!! Thank you so much!
I haven’t seen these before but what a great way of not having to count stitches multiple times 😊
You've convinced me... thanks again for this tutorial. I was not placing the yarn correctly and I need to tie that little knit at the bottom. 😊
Brilliant ❤
That is so, so clever! I will definitely be using running markers in future!
I am going to try out running markers. Normally upon until now I have used both pen and paper and stick counters and strategically placed stitch markers. Thank you for the good explaination of running markers.

O my god this is genius! See it first time! Thank you!
Love ❤️ running markers!
This was so very helpful. Are we able to count the stitches in a garter stitch project also ? Thanks . 🙏🏼

Great! Thanks❤

I have never used running markers, however I will be trying them out.
Vertical Running Markers are also great/ essential for measuring the lengths of twosomes--sleeves, socks, mitts...
I am going to try it to!
Salve, il tuo suggerimento è molto interessante, io lo uso da tanti anni e lascio il segno ogni 10 righe se è a maglia rasata, per le trecce faccio la stessa cosa che fai tu 😘😘😘
My mother always used bits of wool for all marking of this and other types.
I tried running markers, but didn’t do the tie down loop. Good to know.
I just almost gave myself a nervous breakdown trying to learn ladder back jacquard.
Looks simple, but I made a hash of it!!
Ladder back takes some practice for sure, but once you get the hang of it, it's amazing. I'm adding it to my list of masterclasses 😄
@ I would really like to become proficient at it.
The sock I was trying it on had 8-10 stitches between the stars, but I got muddled trying to figure out where I was on the chart and which were ladder back stitches. Phew!
On my next sweater I will try this. It really would be great to use on the armhole/neck edge knitting.
You bet! I can't knit without them 😄
I always put stitch markers every 10 rows or every increase, decrease. Works great, except for large cast ons.
Thank you so much!!!
You're welcome!

It's amazing how there's always something new to learn about knitting, right? 😋💖
Mit Fäden arbeite ich schon seit 50 Jahren, früher gab es die heutigen Hilfsmittel nicht 😅❤❤
If you’re casting on for a circular project, this could make it easier to eliminate twisted stitches.
Absolutely! It can be a lifesaver!
grandios ❤ danke
Good episode, very informative! But hellooooo, Oscar needed that row counter to count the laps he'd run. 😉🤣
P.S. - LOVE your sweater! 😍
Ha! You're right - Oscar is just a super dedicated athlete! 😂
