Composer: John R. Sweney
Eliza E. Hewitt (1851-1920) and John R. Sweney (1837-1899) both lived in Philadelphia and nearby towns in Pennsylvania. Hewitt was a trained teacher who spent most of her life working with church Sunday Schools and writing poems and songs. In the 1880s, her work caught the attention of Sweney, a well-known musician and composer. Together, they published the hymn in a songbook called Glad Hallelujahs in 1887.
