On it's own it would've been mildly detrimental to the band's reception by the mainstream masses... BUT, adding fuel to the fire were opening track of "Black Sabbath," which talks about a figure in black pointing at the protagonist and telling him he's the chosen one, before revealing itself to be Satan; and the track "N.I.B. (supposedly an acronym for 'Nativity in Black'; in reality, the band was poking fun at drummer Bill Ward's facial hair at the time, which the band thought was ugly, so they decided to immortalize it with a rocking track)," where Lucifer is trying to get a woman to love him back as he loves her. These three things enraged the reactionary moral guardians of the day, that if they caught their kid listening to Black Sabbath (or any other rock band of the day that talked about sex, drugs, and immoral behavior) they accused the band of trying to recruit their kids into satanism. In summation, the reason why people _think_ the St. Peters Cross is satanic is because dumb satanists, dumb occultists, and dumb moral guardian parents who grew up in the repressive '40's and '50's and didn't like the changes happening in the '60's! Dumb people in general!
