Perthro is like the seed in the ground. A time of pause is required for it to germinate. We can't see what it is doing, or what it will provide above ground, but we can expect it to be good, or perhaps better than we had hoped for, or maybe able to immagine. That's my perception. this rune then can stand in the place of the blank piece that people call 'the blank rune' which i may add I have never held with . I love the runes they are not the answer but they are the question , they have led me most of my life to study them to find out their beginnings and why they have so many variations and all the time that I do they throw up questions and from that I learn so much. They are the best teaching aid that I have ever known . ' from a word to a word I was led to a word ' how very true this is .... yes we will never truly know their meaning but then maybe we were never meant to , maybe the mystery is just to learn knowledge from them , is this not what Odin sort from Mimir. I love the runes , I love their shape and form and their ability to push me forward .
wyrd...the blank rune...i use it,it means (to me) the future is unrevealed because if i knew i would not be where and when i needed to be to serve some greater purpose beyond my own existance...or that the true purpose is at right angle to the personalgoal...
Mr. Härger, I don't think you know how much this particular video meant to me. Just minutes before I checked this video I did 2 readings. First, for a single rune of the day. I picked perthro in its upright position. After that, I picked 4 runes, one for each season and its "trend". All appeared reversed and it was hard to not have a bad mindset considering life is pretty stressful at this moment and full of change and the unknown. Right after I checked TH-cam, and this was first suggested video literally minutes after I completed the readings and it calmed my mind down so much I cannot even have words to explain. It may not mean much to most other people, but this experience I don't think I will ever forget. You have done a lot more for someone with this one video than you may think. Thank you brother.

In my journey here, Perthro has been the most elusive. Seems fitting in that it seems to be the rune of runes, and like you say, "divination itself."

I also conceived Perhtro with a Bag of Holding/Book of Many things; some kind of Pandoras Box/ I-Ching medium, between Nat.1 and Nat.20 where you are idle and undecided, and in need to make a decision. For instance, then the Spartans consulted the Oracle, then that event and the answer of kill your King or loose the war -- Perthro. It also corresponds with the Aquarian starsign and both ways of Magic, The Awakening and the Darkening. Beware, if you are too greedy, and put the knifes edge at your throat. Pro 23;1-8
I've heard of the rune representing a dice cup but having listened to this I think it may respresent an open rune bag/pouch, which would support the idea that it symbolises divination.

Sorry, couldn't resist. No offence intended. Though I am dubious whether much of what you said corresponds with history. You did give a disclaimer, though, and I know this a fairly old video, so I won't criticise too much.
I think that Perthro actually deals with decisions. Imagine your head was that lot cup Perthro represents and the dices in it are your thoughts. You can shake them on and on but it won't matter anything if you actually don't smash your lot cup on the table to see which dices you get. Same with thoughts and ideas. You can "shake and twist and turn" them in your head but if you don't manifest them in action then they won't matter anything. I think the problem is that many of us are so afraid to take decision that they endlessly shake their "thought dices" around in their heads but never make an actual decision.
My approach on Perthro is the following: ᛈ = A decision must be taken. Perthro does never mean to not decide (a.k.a. give in to "fate") in my opinion

I interpret Pertho much the same as the Odin rune, an invitation to ponder the unknowable, to meditate and to come to realizations and reflect on what we see when we peer into the nothing, but also not being vindictive in our observations to the point we don't listen to the studies of others. It's also interesting to mention epigenetics: if parents are doing sports before they've conceived, this will be reflected in their genome (a switch will be put in an on mode and the "activity level" part of the genome activated), the state of the genome will carry over to the offspring (the switche's position: 1 or 0), and the chance of getting active kids increases. In this sense the genome is changing all the time depending on how we're living (if we change the way we live the switches position may change too and activate or deactivate parts of the genome) - which may influence futures's generations luck.

Just because we don't know a lot about Perthro, doesn't mean that it symbolizes the 'unknown'. Certainly it wasn't unknown to our ancestors.
What we do know about it is this:
"Peorth is a source of recreation and amusement to the great,
where warriors sit blithely together in the banqueting-hall."
There's nothing about fate, unknown, or anything at all. It depicts a joyful moment of drinking and camaraderie in the safety of indoors. That's it, saying much else about it is unfounded.
Old English:
