Man - I remember what a big adventure it was back in the 1970’s to pile into the folk’s car and head down to Waseca for a trip to Herter’s……!!!! This was before places like Bass Pro (or the internet) put the entire world of sporting goods at your finger tips……😂
I had a 1973 Husky 340 that my grandfather bought new. I remember picking it up in New Richland MN. He was from nearby Waterville. I still have the sales receipt and it cost $793.00
That brings back memories, two Husky's and one of the fore runner models on our Michigan farm. Dad had us "pack down the (snow) path to the barns, snaked trees out of the woods to cut up for firewood, pulled on old wooden cross country skis and sleds. Remember seeing my brother jump that Husky darn near vertical across the driveway......
I had a '70 that looked mostly like that except the gas tank was red plastic, slightly larger with a chrome band holding it to the chassis. That one had a 440 (actually 436cc) Kohler with a Tillotson carburetor. With the Kohler, the carburetor sat straight upright so the intake sat directly under the first bend in the steering tube. Any sort of water that found its way to the steering tube would find its way directly into the engine, which wasn't exactly ideal if the sled sat out at all. Looks like the arrangement was a bit better with the angle of the carb on the JLO.
Yep you are right. The gas tank was cracked and a friend of mine had a 71 that the tank was good in so i used it.. Thanks so much for looking. Cant't get away with anything!!!There was no yellow paint either!
@@travistml my dad mail ordered a lot of his fly tying supplies from thier catalog..it was all small enough to be shipped through the post office. The world was much different back then and I do wonder how the bigger items were shipped. The sold all kinds of products. I remember thier boats were made of " Chrome Fiberglass" whatever that is.

That snowmobile was actually built in New Richland, Minnesota. Thirteen miles south of Waseca, Minnesota.
Ok, wonder if that is the only brand of snowmobile built there or if this sled was only for Herter's. Thanks for the info!
I have 3 1970 Herters sleds, 32hp CCW, 28hp Rockwell-Jlo and a 22hp Lloyd
i have also seen herters snowmobiles with 440 sachs engines , (might have been a 71 with the sachs) thanks for looking!!
like a boa!
I got a 59 and a 60
I wonder how Herters shipped thier sleds when people ordered them from the catalog ?
That is an interesting question.. They were quite the retailers in the day. I bought reloading supplies traps and reloading equipment from them..
