      +fl33tbrand Thanks for your comment! I think for looks, I'm still on the wide-hip GT3 camp, but given that it's still a no-show as yet for the manual, my heart is currently with the GT4. :)

      driveopolis since you've had both, which would you take as the better car? 997 gt3 or cayman gt4?

      Me too.. like i get it that the gt3 is more powerfull... But gt4 is a different beauty that gt3 dsnt have

    I love the way you spec'd this gt4. I wouldn't change a thing. A co worker of mine is a PCA member, he was contemplating the GT4 but instead took his 2006 Cayman S and had a shop punch it out to a 3.8 and then added a TPC turbo kit. Its a monster Cayman of a different kind. Anyways, congrats on the car, I like seeing good people like yourself doing well.

    Good review! I am also lucky enough to be getting a GT4 in the next month here in Ontario. I was torn between Carmine Red and Sapphire Blue ( PTS was no longer available as I wanted Voodoo Blue.) I went with red stitching and carbon fiber trim and leather steering wheel with shifter and full buckets...great comment on seating position by the way. Curious as to the recommended break-in schedule. Just subscribed to your channel and looking forward to more videos.

    4500 miles into my Carmine Red GT4---love it. Felt the same way about guards red (I don't like orange reds). I was also worried about the seat belts and brakes (since they are technically guards) clashing with the carmine but they don't. After break-in you'll realize the engine gets a little manic around 5800 rpm; not GT3 manic but things start happening faster.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scott McCann Hi Scott! Great to talk to a fellow carmine GT4 owner. Good to hear the engine screams and picks up, I can't wait to explore its upper registers.

    Subscribed. Seriously you've owned (and tested) some of the most iconic and truly driver's cars from a such a diverse range in terms of pricing and brands, from the Miata to the 911.
    Fun factor sometimes gets overlooked by sheer performance numbers and styling. I would die to know your ranking on what car you thought was your most FUN TO DRIVE after ownership. With your experience, I think it would so valuable to hear your input.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian C Hi Brian, thank you for the subscription! That's a really tough and loaded question to answer. I would rather not be forced to give a ranking but how about I give you my top five? Best driver's cars in recent memory, in no particular order. ND Miata. M2. Cayman GT4. Shelby GT350 (review will be out next week). E46 M3. There are others but those just came to mind and in recent memory.

    I know you just received the car and are still in the break in period but how do you feel about the long gearing? Does it make it any less fun for you to drive around the mountains..etc? (Sorry if I may have missed it in the video). Thanks and I hope you'll be posting more content! I found you through your M2 review and you put out some quality stuff. Cheers.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The3Natural Thanks for your kind comment and great question. The gearing has not bothered me one bit in the city, on the highway, or on medium and high speed twisties. The only time I've noticed it was during some very tight twisties with no real straights. In those situations I was basically stuck in 2nd gear only. Upshifting to 3rd feels too tall and 2nd gear is all you use so you lose a bit of the rhythm of shifting up and down between turns. However, it's important to remember that the 997 GT3 I used to have was geared almost the exact same way and the old NSXs used to be geared very tall too. People didn't make such a big deal out of gearing until recently! Perhaps it's because with PDKs and lots of driving gears, manufacturers are now able to offer lower and tighter ratios with the expectation that the computer is doing all the shifting. I think the tall gearing complaints are valid but a little overblown.

    Hey man! Love the review.... Curious how tall you are? Not trying to hit on you, my wife is curious how well she will fit in the buckets! Are you comfortable?

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +UnknownTheProducer Haha! I'm around 5'6 and very comfortable in the buckets. Just did a full track day followed by a 5 hour drive home. No biggie. Every bit as comfortable as I would be in a normal sport seat if not even more so. They sit deep and are extremely supportive. The best and my most favorite option on any car I've owned. It's a must. Ingress and egress is more tricky if you want to preserve your side bolsters from wear. Maybe I should do a video showing people how to correctly get in and out.

      +Mark Simonetti Hi mark! It was done right after delivery at +ProtexvancouverCanada
      I went for mostly pre-cut pieces with some custom pieces like the hood and front fender. They did a really good job and makes driving such a high maintenace color easier to take care of!

  • @steaksaretasty
    @steaksaretasty 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What are your thoughts about long gearing on the GT4? Also, how would you compare the engines in GT4 and 997 GT3? The sound, the responsiveness?

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +steaksaretasty Great questions. The long gearing 'problem' is there but I think it is blown a bit out of proportion considering that the 997.1 GT3 (non-RS), my old car, had the exact same gearing. Also, older sportscars all had tall gearing like the original NSX. Nobody really complained about that stuff back then! The only time the gearing has bothered me is on very tight, very low speed windy roads like you would find in the Napa Valley. In those situations you wouldn't gear down to 1st out of mechanical sympathy, and gearing up to 3rd does not feel revvy enough. So you drive these tight twisty roads entirely in 2nd gear and you can't even rev out 2nd because it's so tall and the roads are so tight. A lower final drive would be nice, but really it seems to be the only complaint anyone has with this car. I had to admit that the GT4 is actually louder and angrier sounding stock, which is great, but does lack some of the specialness of the old 997 GT3's mezger engine. That engine had more character, more change in pitch as you wound it to redline and had more of a busy motorsports feel. So that is one thing that I still miss about my 997, in addition to the hydraulic steering which is still a shade better.

    I too, prefer Carmine red. Gaurds is great looking too but almost looks like a red car that sat in the sun for a decade. Anyways, great informative reviews as always. 2 years later haha.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know right! But recently I think the composition of Guards Red has changed. The more recent Guards Reds appear more red and less faded orange. I think I am taking more of a liking to guards now, especially when Carmine has become such a needlessly expensive option.

  • @sundva48

    When did u order your car? Are they doing orders again? I know there wasn't a set limit on the production. Is it a kinda thing like if your dealer can get you one or not?

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Aaron Sundve Ordering one of these is tricky. The build is only through 2016 and the production numbers are indeed limited. I think the best way really is to keep calling around. Some dealers still have cars out there.

    Nice video, congratulations.
    It is kinda sad to see even "pro drivers" brands throwing automatic gearboxes into each car, even for enthusiasts who are mainly looking for manual these days and i am pretty sure it will become even bigger trend in near future. In these kind of cars manual should be ALWAYS the option (if not cheaper base variant).

    • @driveopolis

      The engines are supposedly bench broken in. I don't know whether they still drive them on a track before they leave the factory. The manual does state a break in procedure. I don't think it's as big of a deal as it once might have been.

      I took it off! I didn't like how cluttered the rear lettering + model designation was. When I did the rear bumper wrap I had my installer remove the factory lettering and print out the old school model-designation-only decal.

    Love the shots of Vancouver etc. Lions Bay is "home" where I grew up and the folks still reside. I think you might be familiar with it??? ;) I did a lot of learning on the old two lane 99 back in the day..... I can honestly say, I never met anyone who could keep up with me. Particularly when it came to sport bikes. Have fun out there. Awesome car. Maybe when I'm out there later this summer with my 2013 Viper GTS we can see how they match up ;)

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lee Douglas Hi Lee, yes, Lions Bay is a very scenic place. Although the highway is a little different now compared to the two laner it used to be. A drive together would be fun... could I interest you in our next track day? :) I do it with The Speed Syndicate / Revscene. You'll definitely put the Viper through a good workout there. It's a mean ride!

    • @polarbear111000
      @polarbear111000 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, the new hwy is not as good as the old one in some ways, but better in others. Twisty turns are gone, but the surface is more consistent now, and you won't get stuck behind anyone, which is great given the increased volume of traffic. I honestly can't believe how much traffic there is compared to the "good 'ol days." Now we have people going through the Bay 24/7. You definitely could interest me in a track day!!! The only problem is, I'm a lawyer who resides in Saskatchewan now, so I'm not in the Lower Mainland nearly as much as I'd like. I had to leave Vancouver to afford a home and toys :(New Formula Red S2000 + WRB WRX STi '08 Hatch + Gen V Viper GTS). I'm flying out to Vancouver/Lions Bay for the Victoria Day long weekend to visit the folks, but I might plan a road trip with the Viper for July. My e-mail is flyboy999.ld@gmail.com Shoot me an e-mail and perhaps we can coordinate a meet later this summer?? You might even want to take it for a spin and do a review? I've subscribed to your channel, so I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Cheers. Lee.

Absolutely touch base with me. Feel free to check out my Facebook page, which has all three cars in my driveway here in SK, and shoot me a friend request if you're so inclined. Cheers.

    Did you change out the rear badging for a sticker? How come?

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bard Man Hi Bard! You have a sharp eye. I did remove the lettering for a sticker. For one, I had the entire car wrapped in Xpel film including the rear bumper. I wanted a seamless film install without a lettering cutout on the film. Secondly, I think the lettering looks way too busy on the Cayman GT4 tail. I opted to go old school and have only the model designation on it, just like all previous Porsche GT cars, 997 and earlier 911s, and even the current GT3RS!

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +cabfoot No, not adjustable. On the US/Canadian vehicles there is an additional piece of triangular padding that can be removed. This should free up a little bit of space for the helmets. On Euro seats, this piece of padding is absent.

    I'm glad you shared the experience with us. However, instead of waxing poetic (precise, sharp, dynamic, heavy, firm, hard, etc etc) can you actually use technical terms so we know how to compare them to the other pcars? Springs are XXX rate and adjustable with helper spring at XXX rate which allows XXX compared to the 997.1 GT3/991 GT3 etc. Adjustable XXX compared to the 997.1 GT3. And features it has that the others dont' You call it advanced but don't say why besides using superlatives. It's, for lack of a better word, shallow. So, thanks for sharing but let's beef up the content with information.

    • @nwgts437

      +kingsmeadow ha. Touché. No I don't want that, but telling us it's 'great' and 'dynamic' is pointless. A Jeep is 'great' too. Why is the GT4 great? I.e Steering on center allows for better mid corner adjustments. That sort of thing. This comes to more basic presentation skills. More active voice. Less passive voice. Just constructive criticism. I'm glad the content is there. Just offering advice to make it even better!

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Elie Nehme Hi Elie! A bit early at this stage, but I think we can expect more of the same. Still Naturally Aspirated, still manual, minor updates. I think the big changes (like going turbocharged) will happen for the next generation of GT4/3/3RS. Just my guess.

    • @nwgts437
      @nwgts437 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are staying NA for the GTx cars. Head of Porsche’s GT cars, Andreas Preuninger, said on March 6th, 2016, "Based on the huge success we had on the GT4, you can imagine we won’t ditch that project. The next generation (718) might get a GT4 as well. On the GT models we want the six cylinders, the atmospheric engines.”

    I also had a 997 GT3 before owning my GT4, and I have to say I much prefer the GT4. A mid engine configuration is so hard to beat, and some day I hope Porsche just says to hell with it and makes the 911 mid engine. The pro race teams would dance in the streets! You can say what you want about keeping the tradition of a car's original layout, but even Chevrolet with the upcoming C8 Corvette plans on going mid engine after decades of front engine. My only disagreement with you - Guards Red looks better!

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +993mike Haha! I was expecting the Guards Red guys to chime in. Loved your comment though! ;) There was talk about a decade ago about the 911 finally going mid-engined, and I do appreciate the airier cabin in the 911 but I agree with you on the more natural driving experience of the GT4. I suppose if the GT3 came back in a manual, would you go back?

      The GT3 was aging and needed some maintenance and prep for better reliability. I was happy with it, but the GT4 was very tempting. Happy I made the switch though I do sometimes miss the gorgeous metzger engine from the GT3 and the even more feelsome hydraulic steering. Still, the GT4 is making me very happy right now!
