    Really nice,sounds great. I bought an XS650SF new in 1979. By 1989 I'd put 100,000 miles on it. Not sure I'd prefer a rephased engine. The original 360 crank is excellent and runs so nice. Marvelous torque. The rubber mounted handlebars gave me all day comfort.

      Hi and thanks, after having the engine fully rebuilt and Rephased I found it too much for the hardtail frame the thing revved so quick with Mikuni flatslides on the thing was mad as hell. What I should have done was as you say kept it stock crank but having said that it was a project and I sold it shortly after it was finished.

    I also have a 78 rephrased xs650 mine done by Huges. My bike sounds like an older v8 mustang. I buy and sell all kinds of bikes, Harleys, custom rides, GSXR or whatever, I always hold on to my xs and people ask me more about that bike than most others, They're easy to work on, lots of parts, fun to ride. I'll never sell mine. Your bike is also Very Awesome. and cool color.

      I'm looking at buying a 81 xs650 next week. It's already a bobber but I eventually want to put an old school 60s chopper seat on it with the high back padding and get the bare fenders and tank painted with scalloping. Any ideas on where I can find a seat support or can I weld myself a sissy bar for the back support?

      Not much you can't find out there to build similar other than the engine being stripped and rebuilt by Smedspeed tuning using all new bearings, Rods, pistons. Everything thing else is either harley sportster ie wheels front and rear obviously chain drive Conversion springers are sportster fit 1 inch under stock if I recall fame is custom fenland chopper frame oil tank is also a fenland chopper dummy oil tank housing a custom wiring harness and ignition. Brakes were ductati rear brembos fitted front and rear plenty powerful enough to stop this bike fitted on custom mounts Everything is easily available just takes time Everything purchased used was rebuilt before fitted wheels were stripped dechromed shot blasted powder coated and rebuilt with polished stainless spoke new bearing custom rear sprocket light are off the shelf items tge forward controls were custom made by a guy here in the UK ductati rear brake master cylinder as is the front

    Can you please explain what a 're-phased' bike is?

    • @caspian40
      @caspian40  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes this is changing the crank set up so the pistons dont travel together...the advantage is that you dont lose energy when both pistons are at TDC as 1 piston is always mid stroke when the other is TDC..ie rephase-when one piston is not moving (TDC) the other is at max velocity (mid stroke)...removes the search for energy to overcome inertia when both pistons are stopped together (non-rephased TDC)
      - so there is a power saving
      - this leads also to less vibration as the motor runs smoother
      - better responsiveness
      - slightly torquier
      - if you do this weld the pins to the flywheels...balancing helps too
      - there are 2 ways of doing this
      - split the crank in the middle-rotate the right hand side 3 splines and press back together...277 rephase
      - split the crank, replace the 2nd flywheel from the right with a slightly modified 3rd flywheel (remove 21mm from the pin boss where the cam sprocket seats), use a 270° pin and press together 90° out of phase...270 rephase
      - both of these processes require a suitably modified camshaft and a cam-driven ignition system...a good time to consider installing a permanant magnet alternator and dual lobe points cam
