The song title 'Akatsuki' combines the characters for red (aka) and moon (tsuki).
On the track listing they replaced the character for "aka" with "kurenai" (a deep red or crimson), as a tribute to the X-Japan song 'Kurenai'.
There are X-Japan references throughout BABYMETAL lyrics, choreography and staging.
They were a big influence.
'Akatsuki' was Su's first solo song.
It was originally released as a backing track on the 'Megitsune' single.
This is my favourite song of all time. Su's performance almost never fails to get me choked up. Her voice on top of the heavy music is just perfection.
Su-metal in the cape, big red moon and piano are too beautiful! I could watch this for 30 minutes. ❤️
You asked about Su holding up her finger. At that moment of the song she is singing about how she will hold tight to her love even when their link or tie to one another is broken. In Japanese culture, soul-mates are believed to be tied together by a (red) thread. In this case, the thread is tied to her pinky finger.
Oh the japanese concept of "kizuna" 🥺
Yes indeed, many got familiar with this concept through the well known movie "Your Name".
Akatsuki is just Crimsion Moon, but the original kanji for Akatsuki is the one you see in Naruto (暁). The original meaning is the time when night fall ends, or dawn. But there is a double meaning of "The time you waited after your dreams/wishes came true" . If you listen to the lyrics both crimson moon and akatsuki play a role in the song Akatsuki.
Su knows how to work a cape. :D She did attend Acting and Music School....
Love the peformance of Akatsuki from Wembley... Su looks so badass running down the walkway with pillars of flames blowing up on all sides.....Actually Akatsuki Unfinished is a full song... whenever you see Unfinished for a babymetal song, its a tone down ballad version.... YOU MUST react to it, it is so emotional and heart rending performance.🤘🦊🤘😁😁😁😁

Thank you for this reaction, it's great to compare the two performances, you can also already hear her progression in her voice between 2013 and 2016. The full version existed first in 2012 if I'm not mistaken. The unfinished version just fit better in the story of the Legend 1997
I've always found it interesting how just using a different arrangement, performance, a cape and changing the emphasis on certain parts almost makes it a completely different song ! You could put it in the same concert and nobody would mind. Babymetal has done this ones with 2 versions of Headbanger in Legend 1997. The regular with the Kami band and the one near the start of the show is the Night of 15 remix.
Great reaction. Su raising her pinky/little finger is something to do with the Oriental tradition or belief of two lovers being linked with a red thread tied around their little fingers.
From Du-metal's blog: ""The red string of fate" is a belief originating from a Chinese legend. The god in charge of marriages ties two persons as destined lovers with a red string (originally: a red string around the ankles / in Japan: a red thread around the little fingers). It is invisible and shall never break."
Also: ""The red thread" also has some relation with blood. If it refers to the blood flow in her artery/vein, "breaks" may mean her death. If it refers to the stream of bleeding on her hand, "breaks" may mean that her damage is gone."
This is the "full" version, so the last two lines Su sings in this were not in the "unfinished" version - "Akaku somare! Makka ni somare!" ("Dye crimson! Dye bloody crimson!")
@Venice Magic You talked about how a lore intro during a concert adds to the experience; you might consider reading the translation of a new song _in advance_ of your reaction, to give you that added layer of meaning to interpret what you see (including the choreography, which is lyric-inspired). If you want to try this out - you don't have to record it - look up "Du-metal translation" to find the blog which Grington quoted above, for the best translations of songs from the first two albums. He provides extensive notes to help non-Japanese understand the cultural and other references in Babymetal's work, they're well worth reading. Unfortunately no translations there for songs of the third studio album, Metal Galaxy.
You prepared for your first Babymetal reaction _extremely_ well, and that understanding of the dynamic between the kawaii and metal in the group informed your excellent observations from the very start. Having an idea of the meanings of lyrics up front might have a similar efffect.

From around this time, su-metal was called a metal queen.
One of the reasons is this "Akatsuki".
It's a homage to X Japan's "Kurenai", but it has a more dramatic composition.
At the time of the guitar solo, su-metal gives instructions to the two guitars on the stage. It's so cool.

"Akatsuki" is my favorite song ever. And this is one of my favorite versions, with that strings and piano piece as an extended intro.
Because this is totally my thing as a huge fan of power metal. And this one also has a nice symphonic touch. The guitar solos, first dueling and then harmonizing (and being here Mikio (RIP) and Takayoshi makes it even more special), BOH's bass line being so cool. The drums... Aoyama is a human metronome and that control over the double kick is really outstanding. To me, this is perfection.
I believe I'm missing someone... Oh yes... Su-metal's vocals and overall performance is so freaking awesome! I don't know a better way to express myself because I totally LOVE it.

This Version and Budokan Black Night version are my favourites of Akatsuki this one because of Su running through flames and Budokan version because she gives one hell of a Death stare at the end .

I have been to one of their concerts and it is great knowing the songs and being able to interact with them. The energy they put out makes the crowd really get involved, lots of jumping shouting and slapping.

Nice you got a different live version, the long intro isn't part of the original song, is just to give a little bit of break time for the girls and get ready for the next.
This version is from 2016 with a little more mature voice, that's why I like to recommend Budokan 2014 version and later 2021 or this one to compare her mature voice and technique.
Now the tribute to X-Japan is even more clear in here, the SuMetal "Akatsuki daaaa" was borrowed to "Kurenai daaa!" from live concert, and of course the similitude on the title. There's another song with heavy influence and tribute to X-Japan and that's "No Rain No Rainbow" live at Legend S 2017 highly recommended and heavily blocked too x_x

yeah I especially like this version, legend S and Budokan 21 (with Budokan 21 is my number 1), more matured Su's voice do those darker songs so much better
Great reaction! As it's always with yours :) I think that despite Yui and Moa are not here, I can call _Akatsuki_ my favourite BM song. Well, along with _Ijime, Dame, Zettai_ and _Tales of the Destinies._ Its Wembley performance is one of the best for sure but actually almost each one of them have something special about it. And if I had to choose a single one I'd go with Budokan Black Night 2014 version. Not a big fan of 360° stages but I think that Suzuka's solo performances in that show made really great usage of it. She did three at Black Night: _No Rain, No Rainbow_ (its version from Legend S at Hiroshima is the best I think; it's the one on BM official YT channel but is usually blocked so some postprocessing is needed to avoid it), _Akatsuki_ and _Rondo of Nightmare_ (the version from Black Night [preceeded by the great _Mischiefs of Metal Gods_ instrumental] is available on YT and is _usually_ safe to react).
There was an earlier live performance of this song, where (when the "dueling" guitar-solos played) Suzuka fought a masked, evil version of herself. Epic!
Su fought her double at the 'Legend Z' concert back in 2013.
At 'Legend S' in 2017, her nemesis was wearing the 'Legend D' costume from 2012.
Clearly this song has the ability to tear the fabric of space and time.

have you viewed "No Rain No Rainbow"? very beautiful Su solo. Legend S is probabaly the best version, but I hear it's blocked quite often. maybe there's a version with a watermark available. this version was done in Su's home town of Hiroshima.
I agree this version is my favorite as well, although I also love the version where she rescues Moa and Yui. That one is also magical for me, just not emotional.
There is a belief that a red string connects people destined to be lovers, and holding out the pinky symbolizes that as the string is tied to the pinky. The unfinished version is wonderful, but this is Su triumphant, and I prefer that. I got goosebumps when I watched Su perform this live, and still do.

You should really treat yourself to watching Akatsuki from Budokan black night. It's a very beloved version of the fans. And you will get to see the famous death glare from Su-Metal.
And she gets cooked alive by all the flames around her, look how red her face gets after the 2nd blast in the performance. Poor girl was a BBQ by the end of the song.

Yes, the "unfinished" one is a little bit different 😅! This is among the best versions of this song, with the earlier 2014 Budokan BLACK NIGHT, the 2018 Dark Night Carnival and the 2021 BUDOKAN X, which IMHO at the moment holds the 👑.

The "unfinished version" is a full version.
When you are at a Babymetal concert and they go into this song, it's a special night. I was fortunate to see/hear Su perform this song three times on the 2018 tour. I believe it's only been included in one setlist since then. I specifically prefer the later versions of this song, starting with this one, as perhaps the single strongest growth in Su's vocals are in the lower register. If you go back and listen to the 2014 Budokan performance of this song, compare it with this version, you will instantly see what I mean. Fast forward to 2018 and later performances and you can see even more growth in Su's voice. This is the single best song to track that growth. Now that you've seen a Su solo, you'll have to check out a Black Babymetal (Yui and Moa) solo. I recommend Onedari Daisakusen which roughly translated means "Operation Con Dad". It's a song about them trying to butter up Papa to buy them stuff. The ultimate in Cute meets Heavy.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but 'Akatsuki' literally means 'red moon' (or 'crimson moon' perhaps). That's why you keep seeing that imagery associated with this song.

Otherwise, the Black Babymetal songs are very underrated! Black Babymetal is (was) the duo of Yui and Moa on songs without Su, just like Su has her solo songs.
By the way, Black Babymetal is arguably way more metal than Babymetal... "Sis Anger" is a perfect example
Akatsuki is a great from Babymetal. Suzuka Nakamoto is really a great star. But , it's not sure if Babymetal back with a new album. Anyway i was there in Wembley Arena.
Your video of Babymetal in the upper left part of the screen, there's nothing there. It's just a black screen.
You can't see the video with that stupid overlay. If you knew how TH-cam works you would know that you don't need to do that to prevent copyright strikes. As long as you pause/rewind the video it's considered transformative work, which means you can't get a copyright strike. Get rid of the overlay, it's costing you viewers.
