Your channel was recommended to me by Molly of Bell Farms in Maine so I wandered over here to take a look. Very nice video sir and I've never seen potatoes that large.
If I lived closer I'd buy a sack of thos big ones! I love potatoes, ( in fact having scalloped potatoes for noon lunch!). Blessings for a safe & profitable harvest!
yes the air is heaver at night when there is dew in the air, its the same as wood stoves in the winter when u c on a nice day and the smoke goes up but when the air is heavy the smoke goes low around the house
Man, I love the field equipment you use. First, you've got the giant earth 🌎 digester to dig up any enemies underground. Second, the field chopper with forward rock throwing built-in anti personnel capabilities. I didn't see any sights or a red dot on the chopper, so it must rely on the cluster bombing effect. Probably does a pretty good job of snake eradication, too.😊
Now, those are Idaho Potatoes! That ground out there has always been good spud ground. It would be really interesting to know if the manure helps. I'll bet all the phosphorous in it does a spud good.
Yeah, the ground here is really good for potatoes and the manure definitely helps. I think the fields that have manure on them are at least 50 sacks to the acre more than the ones that didn’t.
That dust hovers as the temperatures drop and warm air gets trapped lower to the ground. That is called an inversion and is very typical in Idaho. Don’t spray any herbicides when you see that lol
Hello from western NC. I hope the harvest is going well. I haven't seen any videos since Helene hit, but at least I can catch up on them later. Still no power after nine + days, and it's going to be a while longer it appears. Spotty cell service too. We're making it for now. There are many others worse off than we are. I look forward to seeing the previous videos once we get some power and internet back.
I’m sorry you guys got caught in that hurricane hopefully you guys are doing well over there I wish there was a way we could get potatoes over there to help out. Hopefully you can get the help you need
@RockyMountainFarmer wish there was a way too. 😂 Potatoes happen to be my favorite food. My whole life, no matter how good or bad things were, I could and can always count on Potatoes. Even during this storm and outage I am still eating them. Luckily bought a big bag before the storm. Love watching the harvest and I look forward to catching up on the videos once we get power and internet back. Thanks again.
Yeah, you will never see these in the store because they’re not pretty enough. It’s too bad though because I’m sure they would sell out quick but convincing the grocery stores. That is another problem.
Just found your channel this morning. I saw that post you ran over and had a thought. Why not paint the valve markers with a bright, .even fliurescent color so they stand out in the tall growth. Pink, blue or orange would stand out across the field!
You mentioned that some potatoes are sticking out of the ground before harvest. Wouldn't the exposed potatoes go green which can be dangerous to eat? Thanks again for your daily videos during harvest.
Well, they were only exposed to the sun after I chopped, so it won’t turn them green very fast. We actually haven’t found very many green ends this harvest last year we had more because there was so many more potatoes in the ground.
Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧 Wow those taters are massive! It would be great if you followed your taters to the production facility and see what happens to them? Seen other YT farming channels do this and it works well.
I did ask our processor if we could video what happens to the potatoes at the plant but they told me no apparently they don’t want their secrets getting out. Glad you enjoyed the video.
@@RockyMountainFarmer I have a cousin that managed a couple of Lamb Weston potato processing plants one in Washington and 1 in Oregon and I toured them and had the opportunity to see some of them huge taders impressive going in and coming out as long fries 😀
@@RockyMountainFarmer I ask because you asked for possible questions you could cover in a video. Just trying to help. Also my 91 yr old farmer grandma told me that really large potatoes tend to be hollow or rotten in the center, but you've never mentioned that and have shown some truly amazingly large tatoes.
Yes, Lockwood mfg another potato implement company makes vacuum systems (Air harvesters, Vacs Mobile, Vacs 8) that basically lift the less dense potatoes with a vacuum and let the denser rocks and dirt fall away. Obviously they have a high upfront cost compared to temp employees but they allow for more volume and speed if that’s needed.
No, it’s just if you see it you pick it out when they get hauled into the plant they get sorted out in a water tank but we try to get as many as we can
If I knew your name I'd address ya by name lol but anyway, the dust layer is caught in a layer of moisture just above the ground. Hence why it seems like a blanket of sorts.
Whenever I get a really huge potato like that, it usually has a hollow in the centre because it has grown too fast. Then it gets woody and won't keep. Are none of your huge ones hollow in the centre? Or doesn't matter if they are going for flakes?
I’ve cut up lots of these big ones that I’ve never seen one with a hollow heart it’s not because it’s big. hollow hearts usually come because of how they’re watered so if they’re not watered properly you’ll get hollow hearts
It digs up six rows, and then places it on the ground for the harvester to pick up along with four more rows that the harvester digs that way the harvester is taking up 10 rows
From what I see in the videos, you have a remarkably low percentage of broken or misshaped potatoes. I'm wondering if perhaps, local pig farmers, if there are any, would come and clear out the rejects for pig tucker. On a household scale, the chickens love cooked potato peelings etc, mixed with their feed - egg production is good! 😊 Col, NZ
We plan on giving away an entire truckload of potatoes after harvest is over. Or you’re more than welcome to come glean the fields we just can’t have people coming to the farm to get potatoes while we’re working just because it’s a safety hazard. If you email me, I can tell you where we’re digging if you want to glean.
We had one frost so far and I think our average yield is going to be around 450 the last field we did went 500 but we’ve had some that were around 400 so the average is probably 450

Nice video I like to watch the process of what you go though being a potato farmer it's a little different than sugar beets
Yeah, it is a little different than sugar beets. I’ve never actually seen sugar beets, harvested before. Just from a distance.

Where the people are picking the belt move slower, but you get pretty used to spotting the bad ones

5 THOUSAND YEARS of potatoes at the rate of 1 bag per month... That shed feeds 5000 people...
It will feed way more than that.
Hash browns, sausage, eggs over, wheat toast. Taters cooked with olive oil and seasoned bread crumbs. Then milk the cows. Carry on!
That sounds good to me
I know you have big hands and I think those big taters might be a foot or longer could you put a ruler on em
