    My Daddy is the young firefighter (23yrs old) in this film performing the hose test. I have the news paper clipping that goes with it. Very cool. I found this on TH-cam as I was preparing to write his memorial speech. Thank you for putting this on youtube!♥️

    The siren shown at 0:46 is the Fyr-Fyter Penetrator...one of the first electronic sirens in the early 1960s. Mack installed a lot of them. I own several and have one in use.

    I served from 1970 to 2000. Started as a firefighter retired as division chief. Of all the jobs I had, I enjoyed being a driver/pump operator the most. My department also ran predominately Mack fire apparatus and I drove many of the models shown in the video.
    The street alarm boxes were mostly a pain in the ass. I recall very few fires that were not called in by telephone, either simultaneously or prior to a the alarm box being pulled. Seems like most of the box alarms were malicious false alarms. Another notable thing about the 1970's is SCBA's were carried on apparatus but not used as often, or as long as they should have been. We ate a lot of smoke unneccessarily. Smoke or not, it was a great career, I would do it all over again.

      Today we realize that smoke can cause lung cancer and COPD,

    • @ritirons2726
      @ritirons2726 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The connection between inhaling smoke and lung cancer was known prior to the 1950’s. It’s not a new revelation to firefighters.
      The problem wasn’t not knowing that it caused lung cancer, it was that SCBA for firefighting was still being perfected and many firefighters were very reluctant to use the models available for various reasons.
      The firefighter of the 40’s,50’s,60’s and into the 70’s were fully aware of the consequences of breathing large quantities of smoke, they just chose to ignore it.

    Allentown is the 3rd largest city in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia & Pittsburgh. Mack fire apparatus was manufactured in Allentown & there is a museum at the current Mack plant.

      Robert Walton news to me, thank you. I reckon that then since Renault exited the market, Volvo had no incentive to return, with minor exception of chassis for tankers.

    All Mack Trucks, Allentown, Pennsylvania. The bulldog wouldn't have it any other way... The Tower Ladder is one of the first models, on a "C" Chassis. Then came the "CF" chassis. "Mack-Baker Tower Ladder." ...six outriggers, no tipping.
