- The Los Angeles Lakers fell short to the Denver Nuggets again, thanks to another Jamal Murray game-winner. The Nuggets move on after a 108-106 Game 5 win. The series loss raises questions about LeBron James' future in the purple and gold as he declined to speak about it in his postgame press conference. However, Colin Cowherd does not see LeBron leaving L.A. Watch as he explains why the King will remain a Laker next season and beyond. With LeBron, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant all out before the second round, the basketball world looks ahead to the next face of the league, taking the torch from LeBron. Colin dives into why there is no clear face and his reasons/guesses for Anthony Edwards or Victor Wembanyama taking the torch.

i'll educate you as to why: Colin talks about what people consume. ratings and views matter more than talking about your favorite team in media. once you understand this, all media makes sense.
Colin saying Ant Edwards can’t be the face of the league because Minnesota is a football state is absolute insanity. A small market is going to root for their teams, especially if they have an amazing star quality player who becomes the face of the league. look at Peyton in Indy, He’s like an icon now and before it was a basketball state or racing state.

Wemby got a much better shot at becoming the face of the league. Meaning he’ll transcend the game better and bring more eyes to the game.

Talent wise yes wemby can be and probably should be if he is anywhere near his potential but what colin is saying that usually the face of the league is from a big market city which SA is not as evidenced by Tim Duncan who had all the greatness and success but since he wasnt flashy and played in SA he never became the face of the league.
@@ECI5858that’s definitely going to be changing. if you’re living in SA (which i am) Wemby has brought a lot of eyes and changes to the city. We’re getting a new arena & the city just keeps on growing. We’re the 6th largest city in the country.

"Faces of the League" have to be involved in the marketing of the NBA and its associated products. Magic and Bird came along just as cable and satellite TV were developing. And both of them had shoes; but Air Jordans "promised" that you would fly like Mike; and we all saw how he flew. Shaq and Kobe were a power couple, one brutish and the other finesse-yin and yang-, plus the #2 market and 3 straight bulldozing championships (they lost 3 Finals games in total in those 3 years) Lebron was "marketed" as the Chosen One since high school, and he went on to set NBA records. Curry revolutionized the 3 point shot and by turn the NBA because teams now had to play spread offense and defense, taking away the set half court and big man to revolve around.
Jokic and Wemby come from less media and celebrity driven cultures. They don't understand and care about all the hoopla; they're Joe Punchclocks, ordinary guys with extraordinary abilities. Ant Edwards is up in Minnesota, small market. Tatum is a Celtic. But these Celtics are not your dad's and Grandpa's Celtics which is what we long for (plus they seem to fade out in the playoffs).
I say have "faces". We'll keep an eye on all of them.

The NBA is investing heavily in Cooper Flagg. Only high schooler I've seen featured prominently on the NBA's social media pages. Plus, he's a clean cut white boy from the sleepy state of Maine, right here in the good old US of A, while most rising stars in the league are foreign. Cooper is a great player, but the league definitely has their fingers crossed that he blows up as their modern Larry Bird, as that would be their most marketable option for a mainstream demographic. I'm not throwing shade, I'm just being realistic.

Colin hit the nail on the head . The Lakers problem is not scoring points . It's when they score those points which is usually early . You can right a book over and over and the story and ending will be the same . Lakers loose in 4th quarter because they run out of gas . Why is LeBron playing in the first half ? He should be saved for the second and mostly for the 4th . It's simple math . It's time played for older players . The points scored by LeBron has little meaning if he is worn out in the forth . The first half means nothing in a NBA game and you could say the 4th quarter is all that matters .
LeBron is only good at putting up big numbers when the pressure is low... saving him for the end of the game is taking away his entire skill set lol ;-)

The NBA does not need a face of the league to try and get ratings, it needs to be a better product. The WNBA has a face now, but also the level of basketball has increased tremendously whereas the NBA seems to continuously get worse. I do think more of the European style will bring some ratings back, but currently the league is just awful to watch.

Anyone defending Ham has not thoroughly watched watched the LAL these past 2 years. I’m talking full 70+ games a year from start to finish. He is terrible. Wait far too long to call timeouts, rotations are all over the place, loves 3/4 guard lineups, very questionable. That 3rd Q stretch last night where DEN took the lead was the most Ham thing. Any other coach would be called a timeout once the lead was cut to a possession and it was when A as was hurt. Get guys a quick rest, come out in a set play, stop the bleeding. Nope, DEN takes lead then he calls a timeout smh.

“LeBron is the only small-market face of the league.” Yes, because the national media actually went to Cleveland and covered him because he was a must-see product. The size of a market has nothing to do with a player’s talent, nor their ability to draw eyes; Magic, Bird, Shaq, Kobe, etc. would have been great anywhere they played and would have drawn eyes.
Also, it’s funny that Cowherd mentioned Magic and Bird because those two were already nationally known for their rivalry in college; they played against each other when they were a part of two smaller market schools of Michigan State and Indiana State. Its almost as if when reporters and media outlets decide to cover a topic, that topic gains attention regardless of if it comes from small markets like Michigan and Indiana.
TL;DR The world doesn’t revolve around NYC and LA, so coastal elitist jackals like Cowherd can get stuffed.
