    Chuck said something very important early in the video. He said we are learning all our lives whether we want to or not. He added that some people learn the easy way (by educating themselves and reducing their own ignorance), some people learn the hard way. So true.

      @@StarTalk The ultimate mathematical unification (AND UNDERSTANDING) of physics/physical experience combines, BALANCES, AND includes opposites. The BALANCE of what is gravity WITH what is inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE requires and involves TIME AND time dilation ON/IN BALANCE, AS gravity AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy are linked AND BALANCED opposites (ON BALANCE); AS this CLEARLY explains the fourth dimension; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY proven to be gravity (ON/IN BALANCE); AS TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual ON/IN BALANCE. INSTANTaneity is fundamental to what are TIME AND time dilation ON/IN BALANCE. Accordingly, ON BALANCE, INSTANTaneity is fundamental to what is the FULL and proper understanding of physics/physical experience; AS the extension of what is SPACE is CLEARLY (AND NECESSARILY) electromagnetic/gravitational ON/IN BALANCE.
      What is GRAVITY IS, ON BALANCE, an INTERACTION that cannot be shielded or blocked. What is E=MC is taken directly from F=ma, AS the rotation of WHAT IS THE MOON matches the revolution; AS the stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. Great. INDEED, c squared CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY represents a dimension of SPACE ON BALANCE. ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY proven to be gravity (ON/IN BALANCE), AS TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual ON/IN BALANCE. “Mass"/ENERGY involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE consistent WITH/AS what is BALANCED electromagnetic/gravitational force/ENERGY, AS gravity/acceleration involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE (ON BALANCE). A given PLANET (including what is THE EARTH) sweeps out equal area in equal TIME. Great. What is E=MC is taken directly from F=ma. Consider TIME AND time dilation ON/IN BALANCE. INDEED, consider what is THE EYE ON BALANCE !!! Notice WHAT IS the fully illuminated AND setting/WHITE MOON ON BALANCE !!! NOW, consider what is the TRANSLUCENT AND BLUE sky ON BALANCE !!! So, consider what is the orange AND setting Sun ON BALANCE. ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY proven to be gravity (ON/IN BALANCE), AS TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual ON/IN BALANCE. Inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE is proportional to (or BALANCED with/as) what is GRAVITATIONAL force/ENERGY, AS the extension of what is SPACE is CLEARLY (AND NECESSARILY) electromagnetic/gravitational ON/IN BALANCE. Consider TIME AND time dilation ON/IN BALANCE, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY proven to be gravity (ON/IN BALANCE); AS TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual ON/IN BALANCE. Gravity AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy are linked AND BALANCED opposites (ON BALANCE). GREAT !!!!
      BALANCE AND completeness go hand in hand. Carefully consider, ON BALANCE, why and how it is that there is something instead of nothing !!!!

  • @CrashingThunder

    I appreciate the frank conversation about life/consciousness and touching upon how its temporary nature is what gives it so much value. I feel like it's always hard to speak candidly about this kind of stuff (and especially so publicly and with the reach this show has) because religious and cultural norms can create such a negative backlash to anything that undermines people's beliefs. So in short, I just really appreciate how matter of fact you are about it. It really *is* simple, and it feels like so many problems in society could have been avoided if our cultures weren't so socially acceptive (and in many cases welcoming) of belief without justification.

    • @DarkestVoid
      @DarkestVoid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not religious in the least bit I do think there HAS to be something after death we just have no way of proving it. We can’t see what happens when someone is dead from the person who died’s perspective. And that state of where there’s nothing we don’t know how long that happens. Like Neil said we don’t have a conscious awareness before we exist so who’s to say something doesn’t happen to where one day we suddenly become aware but in another person’s body. I feel out of all things the most likely scenario is rebirth. I see no possible way where we die and then there’s nothing at all. There has to be something else.

    • @edbass2769
      @edbass2769 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was disappointed that you guys didn't at least speak of the common and relatively consistent experiences of near death patients.

    • @njones420
      @njones420 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edbass2769 These experiences are happening when there is still electrical-activity in the brain, and demostrate what happens when different areas of the brain begin to shut-down...It's easily reproduced by g-force testing or psychoactive-drugs. The experience tells us about how the brain fuctions, but nothing about an _afterlife_

    • @njones420
      @njones420 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DarkestVoid There really doesn't "have to be something else" , it's just chemicals and biology at work. Do you think trees go to a better place? What about bacteria? what about things that are so close to just being simple chemistry we don't even call it "life", like viruses?
      Make the most of it, the time after you die will be _exactly_ like it was before you were born ...

    From the beginning of this video, talking about some people appreciating being in school, because their only job is being a student, that was precisely my experience when I went back to college in my mid 30s. It was such a liberating feeling to be in school. Every day of class was a thrill, and that never waned over the length of my 3 years of study. What a privilege and a joy it was to have learning be my job.

    It is a wonder of the 21st century that I have access to Dr. Tyson exploring these topics!

    • @robbin.bankss
      @robbin.bankss ปีที่แล้ว

      you sit still in school because that's the only way you can truly and accurately retain information. your brain can't cement your learning into long term memory if you're busying it with other tasks. watching these videos while going about your day may be fuel for curiosity, but it's a far cry from learning and retaining information.

    • @robbin.bankss
      @robbin.bankss ปีที่แล้ว

      to prove my point, can you summarize what this video taught you about time dilation? WITHOUT going and watching it again? no, you can't. because you didn't learn it, you just used it as bubblegum for your curiosity. nothing wrong with it.

    • @firebird2
      @firebird2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Samantha Loughborough Ummmm, Howard Gardner's work in this area is over forty years old. You may have trouble learning while doing other tasks, but don't assume this is true for everyone.

    • @robbin.bankss
      @robbin.bankss ปีที่แล้ว

      @@firebird2 regardless of your preferential methods for learning, if I read you a list and ask you to recite it, you're going to repeat it more accurate if you focus solely on my words, rather than if you were folding laundry or some other rudimentary task. and that's only an example of your working(short term) memory, not your long term memory retention. your brain has a limit to how many electrical impulses can be sent effectively.

    • @firebird2
      @firebird2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Samantha Loughborough I don't know what your background in neurology or education is, clearly it is limited.

    la primer parte del episodio fue muy importante para mi, mi padre, hoy cumple 20 años de muerto, pero sus dos últimos años los pasó postrado en una cama luego de un derrame y muchos subsecuentes derrames lo fueron reduciendo, fue duro ver como su vida y lo qué él había sido toda su vida se iba desvaneciendo hasta que su cuerpo se dió por vencido. escuchar estas palabras de Neil me removieron un poco pero también me hicieron recordar con cariño el hombre que mi padre fue. un fuerte saludo desde Colombia.

    I was lucky enough to have good teachers when I was in school who made classes fun and now that I’m older I still enjoy learning new things. I know people who hated school so much that they refuse to take in any type of media if it’s educational.

    Neil said something that reminded me of a quote from a book called Brother West: Living And Loving Out Loud." Don't remember the name of the gentleman who said it but it was, "life after death is no more problematical than life before life" and I think that's a really beautiful outlook.

    About us being a simulation. I believe he was thinking we are living in a simulation, not in a quantum simulations that our reality is just one of the many infinite options being run. The rules would not dictate specific results, but run all possibilities. We would have infinite versions and our version awareness is stuck in our has worked out this far. We got Dr. Tyson in this reality. Thats good.

    I have learnt a lot from this Edition and only look forward to learn more. However, I have my reservations on the question of whether we live in or on earth.
    First, I think we should appreciate that the word "earth" simply means "ground." For me, it is safe to say that we live on Earth because the primary meaning of earth was the ground we live in. This word, however, changed in the scienific world to mean the whole mass of land, sea, and all that encompass the planet (Considering all other planets were being named from Greek gods except earth). So going back to its use in language, I still think it's imperative to say that we live ON earth.

    @20:46 Time dilation: Here's my important question. Why do the S-type stars, specifically S-02 not show any signs of time dilation occurring as they near the supermassive black hole Sgr A* in the core of our galaxy? S-02 reaches about 4,000 mi/s as it ventures extremely close to the supermassive black hole. That is about 2.15% the speed of light. Shouldn't it appear to slow down from our perspective, not accelerate?

    26:03 brings up the continuity of Earth systems, which is commonly underrepresented. More than 70% of the Earth is oceanic, with the oceans and lands far deeper than their surfaces. So measuring surface conditions shows our limited perceptions. Most photosynthesis happens in the ocean, for example, as it has since before the existence of plants.

    I am troubled by Neil's explanation of mirror flipping. The reason that (flat) mirrors 'flip' us horizontally and not vertically is that they don't flip us at all, or rather, they flip us in the plane of the mirror. In physical space, in order to turn something front to back, we must either rotate it vertically, flipping it top to bottom AND front to back, or rotate it horizontally, flipping it left to right and front to back. Since we don't ordinarily see people flipped top to bottom and since we can very quickly confirm the vertical orientation of the self in the mirror, we intuitively expect the left-to-right flip, and it is the absence of that flip that we notice. Am I misunderstanding this? Or have I misunderstood the explanation given here?
