I was a single mom and money was tight. I had many beautiful things in my house from church sales, garage sales, you name it. My house has always had friends ask ( where did you get that). Now that I am older and retired I do not do it so much anymore. But I never really followed the trends that much, but had, and still do have a lovely, warm, and clean home. God Bless.

I'm slowly replacing Home Goods type items with things I've made, friends have given me, or items that remind me of places I've been. That way the items in my home tell a story of my life, not the story of that time I went to the store. It's a work in progress and though it requires patience, it's very satisfying.

Real sound advice here, Andrea. It took me at least 30 years to get the home I can “smile at” first thing in the morning. It’s so good when the piece waited on us, and we found it! Love you, and your channel. ❤️🤗❤️

I love these tips! I have waited to make our house a home until we buy our own home....its been 7 1/2 yrs of waiting so far...we still haven't found our home. But I am praying I can decorate my home on a budget in the style I want.
Thank you for your inspiring videos!
You have such a sweet spirit!

These are very wise tips, Andrea! I agree 100% with everything you've said! I am 54 and have started applying this philosophy these last 4-5 years! It has totally changed my life! I never buy anything unless I absolutely love or need it and only if I know exactly where it's going to go. And of course I always remind myself that when in doubt...do nothing! It's also nice to remember the William Morris (1834-1886) advice:"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."😘

Andrea - you hit the nail on the head with this one. If we play with what we have, or wait awhile and really think about a space, we often either have the item already, change our mind from what we originally think we wanted, or really figure out what we want. You have encouraged me to look at my items differently. Blessings to you and your family.

I really agree with all of this. I enjoy decorating and being creative. I love to watch these things on TH-cam and follow blogs. I do get discouraged and sometimes feel like I need to go out and buy lots of new things for the seasons. I am continually surprised at how much some people go out and buy each season for their decor. I just can’t afford that or have room for all that. It is fun to watch but the comparison bug can bite. I have slowly been doing all the things u have said. Do I really love this? Do I have something similar or have a place for more? I appreciate this about your channel so much. I get so much inspiration from u and u aren’t going to hobby lobby every few weeks. Thanks for being a trend setter of a different kind. Less can be more and appreciating what we have is so important.

So wisely said. You remind me of me when I was younger. I did so many things myself when I was young and moved from home. That was so fun and I loved it more when I created something beautiful instead of buying something new. I sewed pillowcases, curtains and clothes, bought furniture at fleemarkets, got them for free or builded. I painted them matte white or in my favourite colours, changed details like knobs. Once I renovated a bed I had, when I was a baby, for my son. I put wallpaper inside and it became so cute. Some of the furniture are still in my home. I really, really love them and they are unique, beautiful and of great quality. For sure I would have had a TH-cam channel back then. But this was before internet. 😁 I was one of very few that actually had saved up for a video camera... I did not even know anyone who had one. It was so expensive and costed me about 2000 dollars 30 years ago. But I had so much fun with it för years, and was happy I saved for it. Thank you for a very nice channel. I found it today.

I found a zippered pillow cover at a thrift store yesterday in a color I was looking to find. Pottery Barn, mashine washable, for $1.50. I was thrilled. Began to consider getting an insert. Remembered I had a throw pillow in another color, not in current use, that would work as an insert. Then I remembered I had heard you say to shop your house! Yay!

One thing I am learning from watching your videos and others TH-camrs is that you do want to have just what you really like around you. Also I am finding if I get to much stuff I am always decluttering and it is because I find my house starts to feel to full if that makes sense. So I agree dont get something unless you really really like it. I mean we never think that when we buy a bunch of stuff so cheap that it is wasting money but actually it can be if we do not use it much and get rid of it. So I agree with you. dont buy it unless you really like it.

Just read your blog, Sweetie pie:).
Wonderful tips, some of which we have done, too!
Our daughter started her career at twenty, bought her first house at 23. Dollars for decor were few ~ wood floors required rugs. She had one for the living room from the previous apartment, but the dining room needed something. We found a very inexpensive rug at a food store that also carries deals on many household items. Just like you, we purchased two rugs and joined them with carpet tape:). The colors were very neutral in a large checkerboard pattern. Kristen always received compliments and inquiries as to where she found that rug! Friends were always astonished it was two rugs, lol!
Hubby and I benefited, too ~ we took home a beautiful oriental style rug from our daughter's new home to use in our traditional decor:). We used and loved it for many years:)!!
I need to take courage from your Mom, be braver about using eBay! Craigslist has been a great resource for us, particularly when we lived in the NE part of our state ~ so many great deals just over the state line in the Pittsburgh area. So many lovely folks in PA:)!!
Love all that you shared with us today! You are so wise for your very young years ~ love spending time here with you! Thanks so much,
Many hugs to you! Kiss those adorable little tow heads from a G'ma admirer & Jesus lover in OH, please:) Your family is just beautiful! Be Blessed, dear one!

When I’m out and I see something I really like I try to picture exactly where I’ll put it in my home. Sometimes I realize I just like it in the setting that I see it in and it wouldn’t necessarily look the same at my house. It took me a while to understand that. Other times I’ll look at something and think that I’m very interested in it. I will think to myself, this is worth say $25 to me. If I go over and it is $25 or less I’ll get it. If it is more I realize that it truly is more than what I want to spend. That has helped me numerous times.

I’m so behind on watching this TH-cam video but your comment is so true, the way you see it in the store is not how it will be in your home. Go home and sleep on it. I’ll admit there have been times when I’ve gone back to buy and it’s been sold but my Mother always said, “it wasn’t for you”.

I don’t think I could ever buy new anymore besides underwear, things I can’t buy in thrift stores/antique malls, or things that I absolutely need at the moment. I’ve been finding so much great stuff. I started my second hand journey beginning of the year and you’re right. I’ve bought a lot of things that I was unsure about and I just bought them
cuz it was a great deal. Now before I buy it I ask myself where will I put it in my home? It’s not about saving money for me cuz that’s just a bonus but the fact that its only the place I can find vintage/antiques. Not contributing to the landfill is a plus too.

I’ve been binging your videos, love them!! I had to chuckle over this video because I go to Home Goods or the like several times a week, BUT, I’m a very picky shopper/decorator so I usually walk out without anything. My area is so busy with shoppers that if you don’t go often, you miss the good stuff and by that I mean, the stuff on my list like a rug they get one of. I think it depends on if you like window shopping and looking or if you’re tempted to buy things you don’t truly love. I don’t shop at thrift stores so Home Goods is where I find my bargains. I can spend $5 and be happy! 😆 My bestie is the opposite, she doesn’t go in stores because she can’t leave without spending a lot or buying something. I think it depends on your personality. My house is on the bare side because I can never find things in a store that I love as much as things I see in someone else’s house in a book or online. I’m so excited to find your paintings because they are exactly what I have been looking for and unable to find in stores! That’s a perfect example. As soon as I get paid on the first, I’m going to print out several of them. I’m just tickled pink that I have found you. I do look in antique stores too but I just have a hard time finding things I truly love so I’d rather have nothing. That was good advice you gave. My motto for shopping is “when in doubt, don’t do it!“ I usually talk myself out of almost everything using that motto but it has served me well.

My home is proudly styled with thrifting and tag sale items. I have a stash as well that I can change things out for the season. I will sometimes re-do items and freshen them up, such as using a coat of chalk paint. Sometimes I donate items back that I am no longer going to use, so I can buy up a few new fresh items to change things up, and the cost is relatively low.

Repurpose first. Go through your things and really look at them. Decide if that table can be used as a desk etc. A lamp in the living room may look better in the hallway. Rit dye is a wonderful way to change color.

  • @AmeliaUnleashed
    @AmeliaUnleashed 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Great tips! A lady after my own heart. Thank you! It’s easy to go overboard when you get excited for making your space your own. Especially if you are a frugal gal (like me) and check out thrift stores often - it’s easy to buy when the price is good. But I noticed that it’s even easier to get side-tracked (as you suggested) and purchase things you think are good but you don’t love it.
It’s nice knowing I’m not the only one who has made this mistake.
I’m grateful though, that the thrift store I purchase from is a non-profit ministry - the money I spend there (just to donate the items back) goes to a good ministry that would support and give my $ to anyways!
It’s just a matter of all that decor taking up space in storage or in my small space!

About that headboard.....I did exactly the same thing. A few years ago I just couldn’t afford the headboard I liked, even a piece of board was extortion at the time but we’d just replaced our interior doors and I discovered that the height of a door was exactly the width of our bed. Bingo! I bought some foam, stapled over some material from a worn out duvet cover and made a slip cover from spare curtain material. It matches the room perfectly, launders easily and cost me next to nothing.

I’ve always had an aversion to spending money unless it’s an investment/asset , which home decor doesn’t ever come into that 🤣
Most of my furniture was either free or extremely cheap off marketplace and I’ve painted it myself. Mattresses we buy good quality and new. But the “shelf fillers” are old bottles and random trinkets from the op shop

It’s true, I live five minutes away from TJMAXX and maybe I go there once a week and so every time I go I come home with something, a candle, a mug, a flower pot or maybe come out with $100 worth of pretty things but didn’t really need them! 🤔🤭

I fell into this trap not that long along. I live 5 minutes from a Winners (like a home goods) and would go after work everyday and leave with $20-$100 worth of stuff. Now I am way more intentional, I look for items at thrift stores and I also do t go to the store nearly as often.

My happy place is Home Goods and TJ Maxx and I don’t feel bad about going in there every week to look around because I’m just not a big spender. To avoid doing what you’re talking about, I have a “don’t buy list” in my head. I don’t allow myself to buy tchotchkes, stuff for my kitchen (unless it’s something specific that I’ve decided I need to go buy), candles, paper goods, signs that say something, anything trendy, anything seasonal unless I’ve decided I need to fill a spot. Instead, I look around for things that are on my list to make my house a home like specific linens I’m looking for or something to add to a collection like an ironstone platter. I rarely find those things so it’s fun to look around but I rarely end up buying anything. Make yourself a list and say I’m not buying these things. The only time I’m bad about this and break my own rule is at Christmas because I’m an avid collector of Christmas ornaments and it’s hard to stop myself from buying them. 😂

I have a Goodwill five mins from my house and on my way home from work so I have to tell my self "don't go, dont go. You don't need anything!"

I agree with you when you say don't go to decor store. Everytime I go to marshalls I'll buy something. 🙄

I'm totally guilty of buying new items just to get a room done, and it didn't take me long to regret it. 😒
