On a Seagoing ship - Steering Gear integrated with the rudder system defines the complete ‘turning mechanism’ mandatory for each and every ship irrespective of size, type, and operation.
The huge cargo ship is turned and maneuvered using a hydraulic steering gear system. The question is - how does such a compact steering gear system on the ship works and move the rudder to turn the whole ship?

Can an electro-hydraulic system be actuated manually at the steering unit location with test or override controls in the event of a bridge communications failure?
You mentioned that there are 2 types of Steering Gear which are hydraulic and electro hydraulic, my question is what are their differences?
He meant the command signal or order from bridge is an electrical signal to actuator in steering gear room which maybe, telemotor or electrical solenoids valves.

What are the differences between hydraulic ang electro hydraulic steering gear
A hydraulic steering gear system uses hydraulic pressure to operate the steering mechanism of a vehicle or vessel. The system consists of a hydraulic pump, hoses, and a steering mechanism. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the pump creates pressure in the hydraulic system, which then activates the steering mechanism, causing the wheels or rudder to turn in the desired direction.
An electro-hydraulic steering gear system uses both hydraulic pressure and electronic controls to operate the steering mechanism. The system consists of a hydraulic pump, hoses, electronic sensors, and a control unit. The driver's input is transmitted to the control unit through electronic sensors, which then determines the appropriate hydraulic pressure to be applied to the steering mechanism to turn the wheels or rudder in the desired direction.
In summary, the main difference between hydraulic and electro-hydraulic steering gear systems is that the latter incorporates electronic controls and sensors to provide more precise and efficient control of the steering mechanism
