The Human Eyeborg: Neil Harbisson at TEDxGateway

  • Artist Neil Harbisson was born completely color blind, but these days a device attached to his head turns color into audible frequencies. Instead of seeing a world in grayscale, Harbisson can hear a symphony of color -- and yes, even listen to faces and paintings.
    Neil Harbisson's "eyeborg" allows him to hear colors, even those beyond the range of sight.

    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    This is interesting. Wassily Kandinsky's senses were like this naturally and music was a huge part of his paintings.

    I'm all for technology like this to be designed and breakthrough for those who are physically born with deficiencies and dealing with injury from accidents. But we have to be very careful doing this for the general public. It's like facial deconstructive surgery, this is amazing and fascinating to help those born or hurt from accidents, to help put someone's body back together, it's morally beautiful. But for someone who is healthy and has no reason to alter the way they look, to go for cosmetic surgery is not healthy, it's a terrible message towards life and appreciation of yourself. That's how I feel about his opinion. I want to help and create ideas for those who lack what I have as an ordinary life. But to give it to the ordinary who has all the basics needed to be their species is going the other direction. I don't think it's a good idea to consume something that we don't really need, and give it to those who might need it instead.

    I think this is a good tool but to teach the mind things out of range from its normal scope...you wouldn't need a cyborg implant forever...maybe a year or two, the human neural network would adjust with adaption to perceive it naturally and after that you wouldn't need to wear it

    Well, humains being actually do have amazing senses that can be develop with body awareness, we can increase our sensitivity and feelings of the world around us, we don't automatically need technologies for that! I think that at the opposite we lose self and body awareness with counting only on technologies to develop our intellectual and sensorial capacities... should I remind you that we are not able today to understand who pyramids are made? (and they did not have amazing technologies at this time..) Start practicing yoga, meditation or Alexander technique and you will see already your senses increase! I can feel when someone moves 2 meters behind me I don't need an extra technologies for that... Technologies can be amazing for some aspects of life or some peoples, but in other cases we should be careful not to lose more body awareness by over using technologies... Because we lose empathie by losing body awareness and A.I. can not bring us empathie back... Pity because without empathie human being can not co-exist with their environment...

    But why does he call himself a Cyborg

    • @xieangel
      @xieangel 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +mahatheone A cyborg, by definition, is a mix between technology and living organism. For an example people who have artificial heart valves or pacemakers, they literally SURVIVE by technology so they can by definition call themselves cyborgs.
      And this man has technology fused on his skull so it pretty much becomes a part of him. He is also by definition a cyborg.
