      Moore did not invent Glycon. Glycon was worshipped by an ancient roman cult that fell apart when it was revealed that Glycon was a literal hand puppet.

    His politics mattered to him, but they should not matter to us if it means we deny ourselves wonderful characters, scenes, and overall stories. Ditko was no monster. He did not harm or abuse others. He was simply an artist working with what he knew and what he believed.

    After Stan Lee died I was at my local comic book store discussing his death and brought up Steve Ditko. To my astonishment even the oldest of the men at the shop, who were in their 50's, didn't know who he was. I began telling them about his contributions to the creation of Spider-Man and other comics. They all told me that I was wrong and that Stan Lee wrote Spider-Man by himself. One of the men laughed at me and said that I was too young to know anything on the subject, and told me to, "go read my damn manga". R.I.P Steve Ditko you absolute fucking legend!

    Funny, Ditko's citing of Aristotle later got used by The Question in JLU when he confronts Lex Luther.
    "Everything that exists has a specific nature. Each entity exists as something in particular and has characteristics that are part of what it is. A is A. And no matter what reality he calls home... Luther is Luther. If I am to save the world, your existence must come to end, before you take office."

      TheBlues32
      JL: Crisis on Two Worlds covered that. In that not only are they're realities where Luthor isn't evil, but one's where he's poor, handicapped or dead.
      The point Question makes is that no matter where he is, Luthor the tycoon, the egomaniac, the pro-humanity man, does not simply turn a new leaf because of one Presidential pardon.

But make no mistake, we are mourning him now but in a few days expect anti Ditko articles coming out saying "we shouldn't immortalize him" how his views were "problematic". That's the kind of shit we were expecting.
      That it's Sitterson again isn't surprising.
      The man is a complete douchebag and morally reprehensible human being.
      I didn't care for all of Ditko's work myself but what I did love, I LOVED.
      It's a sad commentary on the comic book industry that non-lefties have to keep their mouths shut.
      The purile behavior really is coming from one side, isn't it?
      Sitterson shouldn't worry, though. He hasn't created anything of note himself and has burned bridges with fandom. He managed to sink a franchise, something only Kathleen Kennedy has recently done on a bigger scale!
      Meantime, Ditko's still one of the founders of the great Marvel mythos along with Jack Kirby and a half-dozen major creators. We'll remember Steve Ditko.

    The funniest thing about Moore's attempted pisstake of Mr. A with Rorschach is that Rorschach turned out to be the most appealing and popular character in _Watchmen,_ and by far the most memorable. I've been saying for years that Neil Gaiman is the most overrated writer of our times. Pretentious, condescending, with nothing interesting to say about the human condition or people in general; a very successful stunt writer with two or three tricks in his bag. There is a reason that all of his notable books involve mythology of one sort or another; his true gift is translating ancient myth into a form that pleases postmodern palates(i.e. illiterate, pretentious horseshit).
      He is the Alan Moore to my Razorfist; cannot fucking stand the sight of him.

    One of the Ditko creations that doesn't get much attention is Speedball. Gone are the politics of his more personal work, but it's a lot of fun and recalls an innocence that just disappeared in the dark and gritty 80's. I also really liked his much overlooked Dragon Lord in Marvel Spotlight, and the initial Shade The Changing Man for DC in the 70's.

      Certainly not the edgy, prolific choice, agreed....but I like it because it's a throwback to his earliest days (and as I recall they even marketed it like that...'in the tradition of early Spider-man adventures' etc). If you look closely, I think Ditko is actually allowing some nostalgia to seep through his otherwise no-nonsense veneer, and that's a complete rarity for him.
      Also, Speedball is that catalyst for the entirety of Civil War, so hey... :)

  • @numnut154
    @numnut154 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Rorschach is disturbed because of his experiences but I wouldn't call him insane, honestly I found him one of the most admirable characters of Watchmen, in spite of his ultra-violent tendencies, because he knew the difference between objectively right or wrong actions. Unlike Veidt who couldn't see beyond his own ego and had no real empathy for "lesser" beings and only respected long dead conqeurors, and unlike Dr. Manhattan who saw everything as if he saw it for the first time, a naive god, who never truly made his own decisions but instead was a slave to instinct, emotion, and the strong personalities of those around him (aka Nixon and Veidt) much like a child. Rorschachs justice may have been severe, brutal, and driven by vengeance and rage but he never punished the innocent.
    No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Oh, DC eventually ruined the Ditko Blue Beetle whether DC fans acknowledge this or not.
      I NEVER like the Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle or the fact DC allowed a comic to be written where a hero got his brains graphically blown out on a page.
      To me, that's when DC Comics' innocence died. That's one of the worst moments in their publishing history.
      Ironically, DC has "allowed" the Ted Kord Blue Beetle to have appearances in animation. He appeared in two episodes of Batman: The Brave and the Bold but died heroically trying to steer a rocket away from a city instead of getting his brains ignominously splattered in a madman's room.
      DC eventually did bring back Kord as the mentor to the current Blue Beetle, a character that just hasn't been embraced by fans no matter how DC tries to push that character.

    • @michaelkeha
      @michaelkeha 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      AvengerII Um the death of Ted Kord was one of the best stories ever written and Ted went out defying Maxwell Lord in about as objectivist a way as he could standing by his convictions till the bitter end his will unbent by the psionic powers of Maxwell Lord it would have made Ditko proud as for Jamie Reyes you may have not of liked him but much like Miles Morales in Marvel he actually is quite loved as a character having a joe everyman quality to him that fans enjoy and back on how graphic the death was grow up dude comics are allowed to be dark and graphic hell some of the best ones are just that

    I understand what you mean, but the man co-created the most popular super hero in the world, people are gonna point to that before The Question and the other things you mention.
    And yes guys, do yourselves a favor and read the Spiderman '60s run (also the '70s), those were the best runs the character had.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I completely agree with you on Spider-Man.
      The Ditko run is all you need to understand that character. So, so many of the best concepts and villains were created by Ditko. NOBODY ELSE was as prolific on that character as Ditko was.
      It is SHAMEFUL Marvel never did a press release yesterday but it's an indication of how much they care for the people who built that company in the past!!!!
      If it's purely political and from personal spite, that company deserves to go out of business.
      Marvel is the WORST of the BIG TWO in terms of how it treats comic book professionals and generally ignores its past history. And it's a shame this is happening when the characters are arguably at the peak of their public recognition now!

    • @Jose-se9pu
      @Jose-se9pu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I personally preffer Romita's style, but Ditko CREATED that universe, Romita had something to work with, Ditko just created a UNIVERSE out of thin air.
      About Marvel, they are just another fast food franchise under Disney's iron fist, they are just a shadow.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      And Disney themselves has distanced the company from its creators.
      You have to literally read books by fans in the animation industry to learn anything about the artists who worked for Disney!!!
      Now, some of those fans inject vile hatred into the books and you have to separate those opinions from the facts. I tend to take the "Evil Walt" commentary lightly because it just doesn't jibe with what I've read and the personal experiences of people who actually WORKED with Walt Disney. It's also amazing how many of the prolific animators stayed with Disney 30 and sometimes well over 40 years!
      As far as Marvel goes, they've always shit on their creators in the past. There's been a time or two when Marvel execs DID try to do better by the writers and artists working for the company -- Jim Shooter doesn't get much credit for what he tried to do to get people benefits and more money for their work; he understood if you rewarded people, they WOULD do better work and you'd get higher sales! -- BUT the mentality of the people who've been in control of Marvel since the late 1980s is just -- Eccch!!! All the stuff Shooter instated was gone by the mid, late 1990s. From what you hear from comics creators today, Marvel is a sweatshop and they employ very low-paid people who have huge chips on their shoulders and it comes out in the new monthlies. The ideology of Marvel today is just diametrically opposed to the vast majority of people who enjoy reading comics books. I generally REFUSE to buy any Marvel Comic in principle that was published after the 1980s. I just generally DON'T like the Marvel Comics created after the 1980s ended!
      It's not to say I'm unaware of what DC did to Siegel and Shuster far in the past but there has been more concerted effort to do good by creators and settle with people faithfully in court than I've ever seen with Marvel.
      Razor told me Marvel did acknowledge Ditko in a Twitter remark but that's a two-second remark.
      DC made a press release about Ditko and I saw that on websites yesterday. Jim Lee AND Dan Didio did make remarks about Ditko. Nothing but compliments, too.
      There's a huge difference when a high-up company rep acknowledges the passing of a legendary creator versus an anonymous Twitter remark that a 5-year-old could have written!
      Typical for Marvel, yes, but it's still hisheartening...

    I think Moore's confusion about Rorschach's appeal derived more from the fact that Rorschach was a true outsider suffering from mental illness, maybe even borderline personality disorder, who had as much in common with Travis Bickle as with Batman. Don't get me wrong - Rorschach is a very appealing character because he is so uncompromising.
    As fun as Ditko's earlier stories were, Mr. A was a bit more extreme than, say, The Question. The Mr. A stories are actually much closer in spirit to what the leftist idealogues have been doing to Marvel and DC than Watchmen ever was. They are sermons, certainly not something that would normally be published in mainstream books meant to entertain.
    That said, I also think Mr. A is an appealing character. I think Ditko could have done a better job of crafting complex stories around the character, but Mr. A is as uncompromising as Rorschach. It's easy to respect uncompromising characters like that, even when you don't always agree with them.
    I believe Ditko's point in some of Mr. A's stories was that, when you're a victim of a serious crime, and you've got a gun to your head, you wouldn't mind someone like Mr. A walking in to save the day, even if it meant the person threatening to kill you was killed in your place. If that's true, then it's hard to argue the point.

    There was something so very unique about Steve Ditko. Much of his superhero work (including Spider-Man) looked like it belonged in a horror or crime comic.
    If it makes you feel better about the political divide, both Jim Starlin and J.M. Some times respect crosses political the political divide as it should.

    Imagine if an Objectivist were in the main-stream comic industry today... They'd probably be turned deaf from all the autistic screeching from their "peers." The only modern comic artist I can think of who identifies as an Objectivist would be Bosch Fawstein, who is far from mainstream, if not considered notorious, author and artist of "Pigman." I never enjoyed his Charlton work as much as what he did at Marvel BUT the Ditko artwork on both the Question and Blue Beetle were inarguably cleaner than what he did on Spider-Man.
      It was just so much more crisp... His Spider-Man always had an eccentric quality to it but I never felt he put his best efforts into it after a while. I think Ditko became very disillusioned with Marvel and preferred to work with Charlton because they left him alone and let him do his thing!
      It's amazing ALL of Ditko's Charlton work was reprinted by DC Comics a few years ago. I've got those hardcovers. Even if they're NOT the best stories I've read, the artwork is among the best he did in that period on superhero comics.

    • @richardthorndike6608

      granted I'm not entirely objectivitist but I take it more of a virtue kind of thing. Oddly enough back in the silver age having characters both on the hero side and the villain side was not that uncommon in fact there is a whole trope for it call "Stout strength"
      tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StoutStrength
      Heroic Version:
      tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BigFun
      Villainous version
      tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FatBastard
      Heroine specific:
      tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BigBeautifulWoman
      Typically Female Villain:
      tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BrawnHilda
      yeah contrary to popular belief the idea of overweight comic book characters villain or hero is not that new of a trope. Nor has there really been a lot of controversy on it till about the last 20 years or so. I blame the "dark and gritty Realism" movement which honestly I think has become code for post-modernist.
