Thanks for the shopping video Johnny! That is an amazing deal on pommegranite. After I saw this video I checked the Target in Seattle near me and the price for ONE SINGLE one was $2.99
Dude, didn't you grow up in SF? Civic Center farmers market. Every Wednesday and Sunday. $1 bags. And every old lady on MUNI has a grocery cart. Not sure how you missed that.
When you picked up the olives, I believe than man said you can eat it with Horta, that’s greens or dandelion greens. I recommend buying Ion Chocolate. I love doing shopping in Greece. Pomegranates are typically in season now. My Cousin has 3 trees on her property. You should drive South, they have rest stops on the National Highway and you may catch locals selling honey, spices and various crafts. Saffron is very cheap in Greece as well.
I am a Brit living in Turkiye and I use a trolley for market shopping. I vowed I never would, but better than struggling with heavy bags. I love Athens.
This is what I love about Greek, or Hellas what we call the beautiful country here in Norway. They're a mix of old fashion markets and new magazines, malls. Been there many times and love the country!
I am from Milwaukee, WI and we use carts everywhere. Even when doing laundry. They are very convenient! We also have very good farmer's markets with everything you can name. You must have not been to many cities in the U.S. And by the way, it's pronounced "pomegranate" and not pomegramat. Depending on where you go in the States, you will always find something different so give us a break and stop downgrading this country.
The shopping trolleys come in various shapes and sizes, and they are fairly popular with the older ladies here in Melbourne Australia. Especially with the Europeans. We are all from The Netherlands originally, and mum has 3 of the things, each a different size depending on how much she intends on buying. SHe is 76 and quite happily walks the 1½km to the local shopping centre once or twice a week.
Farmers Markets are definitely more expensive in NJ as well. Due to the cost of labor, imported produce is often cheaper in the US than anything locally grown. We also have fruit and vegetable markets in our area that are cheaper than the supermarket, but they are full time shops.
Wow youre living in a pretty rough area one of the worst in the city, ive been living in athens almost all my life and ive only been there 3-4 times stay safe always lock your door and windows no matter what. Greece was much cheaper before the war and inflation, now prices are out of control, we are all being patient for things to get back to normal. Please upload more videos before you leave, dont forget to visit Athens riviera and seaside.
The " Laiki Agora " translates as " Folk Market ".By greek standards that particular farmers market is looking a bit dry and the pomegranits small, usually you get 4 or 5 types of spinach like greens.I use to take a suitcase with wheels and fill it up instead of a babouskas cart. Usually there are masses of bunches of fresh herbs ,dill, parsley .Years ago the quality of the apples and oranges was dizzying . A chlorifyl eyefull and the giant peaches knock you out.Greece certainly is a fruit and veg wonderland or was up till recently.
And to think that Athen's farmer's markets are probably the worst in Greece, you should visit a farmer's market in Crete where the fruits an vegetables are so fresh like they're still hanging from trees. Also the Eastern and Balkan culture of Greece makes it more than acceptable to bargain evrything in the farmes market until you get the best price. You should visit more cities of Greece, they are as beautiful in the winter as they are in the summer
Hi Johnny, just a say that I wish I had that farmers market here in Redondo Beach Ca. We do have one that I shop at every week, but it is expensive and sometimes the vendors don't always sell the freshest of food. I also had a shopping cart that I use at times since I don't drive in So Ca. It is easy and I can walk to the market with it and back home. So, convenient item. Athens has some great deals on food. Wow, cheaper than the grocery stores.
Also in California most of the stores have carts that lock outside the parking lot, so people wheel their own carts like that to farmers' markets, and put them folded in the shopping trolley, then unload their backs into it outside and wheel it home. Less common now that the car-less can just have everything delivered.
About 10 years ago living in a beach town with 0 parking a friend convinced me to buy one of those " granny carts" to haul my groceries back home.. Best thing I ever bought. Lol. Got a couple neighbors to buy them as well. Who cares how it looks? Saves your back 👍 and no I don't think all Cali Farmer markets are more expensive..depends on the town. Safe travels
Food is your most important investment along with good meals at the right time of day. Over eating good and bad food is pointless unless its just for your comfort as they say.
Your observation is correct, Greece might be in the EU but it's way different than most European countries especially central Europe. The only thing I would like to see Greece copy from other European states is the order and cleanliness of the streets! It's like we're walking in a warzone sometimes.

The farmer's market in Santa Monica emphasize organic, but without any evidence of that, so they charge more than Ralph's. But that's just Santa Monica. In Arizona the farmer's markets appear to be run by real gardener's that grow it in their back yards and not yuppies like CA so everything is cheaper by half. California has such authoritarian restrictions, regulations, permit requirements and too much big brother for everything it's like having to bribe the union bosses to get anything done there.
Wow it's so cheap for everything and all looks so fresh.. (remember a kilo is 2.2lbs) We're getting ripped off. 12:46 I once bought something similar at bed bath and beyond as a Christmas gift for someone who hated carrying their groceries to the car.

I live in Cheshire UK & farmers markets are most definitely more expensive than supermarkets BUT also where I live my nearest farm shop on the actual farm is a lot more cheaper for veg & I also have a pure milk (unpasteurized) milk farm on my doorstep that sells cheaper milk. Sadly I do prefer my milk to be pasteurized. Hope that helps??? If you ever come to the UK again come when the Cheshire show is on as you get all the farmers & farm markets there

@@JohnnyFD Not that I've noticed. But, I don't go to all the farmers markets. Perhaps some of the more upscale neighborhood farmers markets are more expensive, but I usually go to the Civic Center's market.

Farmers markets in the mainland USA and Butcher shops are always more expensive than the grocery stores due to supply and demand. In Greece and most of Europe you are dealing with a different economy and lifestyle that is much older than that of the mainland USA. Puerto Rico is like Europe, so hence why I say MAINLAND USA. Farmer's markets are smaller and local and there are no corporate distribution deals going on between the farmers and local sellers on par with Walmarts and Aldis and Krogers et al. Very rare, you will find cheaper prices in FLEAMARKETS as those are where most people go to sell second hand and even there, the fresh food is much higher than Walmart. The only thing is local markets, farmers markets and fleamarkets sellers have food that can be exotic and NOT local to the area or just not sold in Walmarts and Krogers. I have yet to see a local food shop or market be cheaper than a Walmart in the Mainland USA..
I live in Morgantown, West Virginia and I use public transportation everywhere I go and I always use my folding grocery cart, carrying heavy bags back in my arms is terrible.

A really interesting look at food shopping in Athens, Johnny. Thank you. I love to shop at the Northern Italy outdoor markets when I am there visiting. We rent a villa or apartment, and so stock up at the outdoor markets. It's so much fun to immerse yourself and shop with the locals and it's far cheaper than supermarkets, too. A good idea to use the little shopping cart! I have seen them used more in the UK, even by younger people.
