  • I hate to state the obvious but gas and it's vapor are FLAMMABLE. BE CAREFUL.
    This is how I managed to drain the fuel tank on my Ford F350 6.7l diesel after putting gas in by mistake.

    That is the water separator. It separates the water from the diesel so you don't pull water into your fuel system. It is not a bad idea so drain off a pint or two every few months to check for water. Water in your fuel system can be catastrophic.

    Just made same mistake. Glad to know it’s a simple fix. As long as you don’t pump gas into the fuel lines I’m assuming.
    Thanks for sharing

      Gas in the fuel lines isn't a problem. I drove about 1/2 mile till the truck stopped at the side of the freeway. That's why I drained the top filter too. Starting the truck in the video was the first attempt after draining the gas.

    Some gas left in tank won't hurt anything. Just fill with diesel

    Did you run the engine with gas in it? I know a guy who made this mistake and ran the engine for a few minutes before catching his mistake, and he wound up with new injectors, fuel lines, filters, in-tank pump, and some other things. I have a 2017 F-250 and I normally only fuel at diesel-only stops, but I always double-check for fear of destroying my rig.

      @uktech1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I ran it with gas in it but not for long as it stopped running after only half a mile. The tank was almost empty when I filled up so there wasn't a high enough diesel content to keep it going. Never had any running issues after this.

    Have you had any follow up issues later? Pump failure or injectors? My wife just done this and drove home, ford wants to change the full fuel system. Quoted me $14,300 Canadian

      And they wonder why people call them stealerships. This happened on my last big trip and I've only done a few local drives since with no issues but in researching this I haven't come across anyone who needed that sort of work after putting gas in. Maybe change the two fuel filters but that's about it. The Ford Powerstroke diesel does have an issue with fuel pump failures and because of poor design the broken shards all get pumped into the fuel rail and injectors. Then you are looking big $$$. There's a class action law suit going on that claims Ford knew this would be an issue but released the trucks anyway. It's best to run a good additive that'll help to lubricate the pump. You can also have a "Disaster Prevention Kit" fitted. It doesn't stop the pump failure but it'll stop the debris from being pumped into the injection system saving you $$ if it happens. I've got a kit but haven't had chance to get it fitted yet.

      Late to the convo here but they have to recommend that for liability issues. If they just change the filters and drain the tank your pump could still fail. The kit from from Ford is like 7000 and then throw in 20 hours of labor and boom you have a nice bill.

      @@evolburd5768 well I drained tank, changed filter, ran some fuel conditioner and told the wife I will fuel up the truck from now on. 3 years and 200,000kms, no issues

      @@leowilson4539 thats good. Im glad it worked put for you but as someone who has done the fuel system swap on multiple times this is probably one of the worst fuel systems ive had to deal with. Ironically im sitting in an f250 right now that the pump just nuked the hpfp.

    • @uktech1

      When I changed the fuel filter previously it just drained the bowl that the filter sits in. So I thought I was going to have to keep priming the pump but I just opened the filler cap at the beginning and it kept flowing. I was surprised but very pleased.

      I tried the same thing but it quit running out for me, with tank lid open, I ended up dropping the tank , but I also messed up more then you, I didn’t pay attention and poured DEF in my tank 😳

    I just did this with a 50 gal tank on mine. Did draining out of the filter get all of the Diesel out of the tank?

    • @uktech1
      @uktech1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it drained the whole tank. Luckily I was almost out of diesel when I filled it with gas so I was able to use the gas in my other truck. If there's too much diesel mixed in with the gas don't put it in a gas truck as it'll smoke really badly and may have run issues. Check with your local garage about disposal.

      I drained it until no more was coming out, which I think was all of it. Filled it with about 5 gallons of diesel from a can to get it started and drove straight to the gas station and filled the tank. No problems after that.
