  • There's two objects in the woods that I found on Google Maps. They are located off an old railroad bed and I want to find out if they're still there and hopefully figure out why they're there.

The old way that comestible/used water Aqueduct reservoir system was at community's service.🤝😌 "Progress!", they said!🤖
But wasn't it there yet in Ancient Rome?? Yeah! This way of an operating current water system is still crossing huge through all the Europes!!? And still have huge citerns under some huge towns, that aren't Catacombs..and is now domestically compatible with electricity and nobody dies!
There's only 3 or 4 differences i could easily identify and also splits the old way from the modern way to be build the best fonctional aqueduct system, thinked, planned n materialized to this day..
      🎶I'm done!💥😌

My guess is the upper structure was a reservoir and the lower possibly a valve house to provide water for the rail line. The PRR seemed to favor round stone pools and round valve houses but usually a similar relationship to each other and the line they served

Jay, I would agree with the upper foundation being a water collection basin for filling locomotives. If you look at the 1939 photo, there is a round object off of the north corner of the lower foundation. Possibly a water tower that was filled from the basin? Another great find!!!

Agreed - I truly believe that it was a filling station for the steam engine locomotives. The lower building may have been a coal reservoir, or more likely, a residence/wayhouse for the train crews.

The building has been built maybe late 18th, early 19th centry and worked till early 50's. Maybe a water tower or some property. Also, the older American buildings of 18-19th centuries had rocky bottom and upper wooden part.
Actually, this design was same to other countries' of the same century. My country is post Soviet and even before Soviets, it was post Russian Tsardom country. And in late 18th century some buildings around the rural areas, especially around the woods and forests, were having this type of structure. Especially old water towers.
I bet, this building is old enough as outlaws era - late 18th century.

  • @ocsrc

Water sources were critical for the railroad for the steam engines
Some of the locomotives were designed to draw water out of creeks and storage reservoirs
I remember seeing tanks along side the mountains where the tracks were up in rural VT, NH, NY and Canada
They had natural little creeks and they built storage tanks of wood that the creek filled and overflowed out of

I think the smaller object was the water tank. It was an old wooden water tank, and you are seeing the roof in the old photos. The larger upper structure was probably a reservoir that filled the tank below. Then maybe somewhere down the hill by the tracks, there would be just a stand alone water column that was fed from the tank on the hill.
Or its possible the reservoir fed straight to a water column, and the smaller building was a coaling station, with a roof to keep the coal dry.
Which in your old photo, I didn't see a lot of signs of how coal would have been brought in and moved for a coaling station, so sort of doubtful it was that. They did make square water tanks, even though they are a bit rare to find.

I'd love to visit this site. I followed the D&H Trail on Google Maps, but I couldn't find a match to the aerial map you shared. I was thinking it was some sort of battlement, the foundations of old lumber mills or just the ruins of some houses. If they were water basins, I'd think there were streams or old creek beds running toward them.

The little manmade creek bed and waterfall was also very cool, always love the sound of the water. In the days of the steam locomotives, this area was certainly still pure wilderness. Therefore, it is quite possible that the point at which these ruins are located was formerly used to refill water at the steam locomotives. There were also systems in which the steam locomotives were equipped with a bucket system, which allowed them to draw water through water troughs between the rails. Such a system was formerly used by the New York Central Railroad.

There's more of these in the patch of woods between Rogers Street and Wayne Street. Again they are right next to the D&H Right of Way. But these are not on any elevation. Also if you ever want to find out which historic picture tile he is showing you. Just search the number on the top upper right of the photo on the PASDA website. Most railroad historic organizations have line Maps that show where every interlock, tower, flagstop, culvert, water refill, ect. Is located. Also cross refrence where the C.C.C. camps were located. Kinda looks like a foundation for a mess hall/bunk house for a camp. But then a lot of C.C.C. camps utilized canvas tents with only 1-2 small stone foundation structures.

you said the d&h railway, and then the gravity line, which ran from Honesdale Pa to Carbondale PA. then moved down to Olyphant and on to Scranton, but they used D7H special Loree's to run along those areas The Gravity Line ran though between Carbondale and Honesdale through a series of planes. I know because I live very close to what was the Heavy Track of the D&H

  • @workingfolk
    @workingfolk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

The D&H built ponds and catchments there to supply water to steam engines, not to power locomotives but to power the stationary hoists that pulled the cars of the gravity railroad up the mountain.
I haven't been able to find an old map showing them but probably the larger structure is the pool and the smaller foundation enclosed the steam hoist equipment.
The D&H modified the route of the gravity lined a number of times and when they abandoned it in favor of steam locos, the new tracks obviously couldn't follow the steep grades of the old tracks. That explains to me why those old structures aren't near the rail bed you hiked on. Also, the location of the site was so close to the D&H shops that locos wouldn't need to stop there for water when the line ended a mile west.
In your previous video in the same area, the residential road you were on that took you to the brook was pretty much Plane No. 4 of the Gravity Railroad. After crossing the brook, the tracks went up the steep hill to the coal breaker. There is a fire house at one edge of the large cleared area along the highway where the breaker once stood.

As a young boy in California I have fond memories of riding horses out to different ranches that had water collection basins (rectangular cement ponds) the farmers would use to water their mainly tree crops. Such fun just innocently skinny dipping with my friends in these water basins. Thank you for bringing back those wonderful memories. 👍

Green spray paint, usually means there is drainage or sewage near by.

Lower structure I would just about bet and agree with another comment on here it was either a valve house or combination valve house and rail house for workers, and top was probably a basin for water to feed both the rail road and house

There is a feature like these in the woods near my home, and it wasn’t very far from where an old rr line ran thru, I’ve seen it with my own eyes, walls exactly like these and it did/does hold water from a natural spring.
