It's actually really funny to watch you walk past the camera. Being a video creator myself, I can't help but watch in my minds eye, you setting the camera up, walking away, walking past it, and walking back, just to make those clips. Great videos, just something that I'm aware of gives me a little chuckle.
Interesting take on it. I've seen other applications of tarps and blankets to improvise backpacks, and they usually end up as something closer to a sling pack in usage, and always seemed to me like that way would be better if the contents were secured in the center, the same way you demonstrated in the video.
Great photography!! That is a nifty version of an improvised backpack, I think that old timers knew a lot of these kinds of little tricks to get things done, thanks for sharing!
Lars, what timing! I'm actually building a Franken-ruck right now! I started out with a South African Defence Force M-82 large external frame ruck in Nutria brown. It had some missing/damaged parts so added the improved ALICE shoulder straps and waist belt from London Bridge Trading for their ten pocket ruck in OD, and the beaver tail from a US ILBE ruck (digital ACU camo)which I've dyed black then painted a flat dark earth-ish colour. (Dying black first keeps the pattern from showing through)The beaver tail acts as a compression panel, flip down seat, load panel for large/irregular items, and can even act as a ground cloth in a pinch. It's not pretty but it is so comfortable now, and since the pack has its own shoulder straps and waist belt, it can easily be removed at camp, and I'm left with a frame and load panel to go and get firewood, rocks, fill water containers, etc. I guess I ought to mention I broke my back twice, so any weight carried on my shoulders or in my arms can be very painful, but letting the waist belt carry the load on my hips is not a problem, which is why the "old school" external frame works much better for me than internal frame or unstructured packs. And the SADF M82 ruck has a fantastic frame!
I see that those freedom trees are everywhere in those woods...😄 You must be spreading those seeds acrosed the landscape. 😉 Great vid on the multi use tent half. Best Wishes Lars!
You know how it goes, you get some good boots and then you want the next great boots you didn't see before, pretty soon you have a closet full of boots. You get a few good vehicles... 😁 Seriously though, I hope you get a great beast that can do well in the swamps and logs.
Gaz 71 a serious vehicle....needs a serious purpose and lots of use...start bringing in the tourists Lars....hunting, Russian gear, Russian woodland/survival skills, travel...and metal detecting as well as joyriding the Gaz. Maybe find a use for the moonbase! Make sure the Gaz has a reverse gear. Hope you get it.
Al the best to you all. 100 years today since the armistice, 11th Nov 2018. I was stood at the war memorial on Grand Ave, Hove, England, to pay my due respects. We must never let such horrific wars happen again. Don't let the politicians push us into war. Lest we forget. We WILL remember them.
Sometimes when you buy a good stock vehicle, you end up spending less money than if you brought the worn out one that's been modified and abused. Nice boots by the way, look like something from Canakastan
That would be nice as a backpack for some things, but the deer we have here is so large until you would have to cut the meat up before transporting it. As for other items it would be nice.
Correct me if i'm wrong, the knots used are canadian jam knots for the bottom of the straps and a larks head for the top, in case anyone was wondering.
Hey Lars. Another great video on the Plash Palatka. I have 2 questions for you. First, what did they use to make this wonderous tool so waterproof? And secondly, what the heck are those Dang 2 belt loops for??? All the best from St Louis MO, John
Thanks mate! I will talk to the guy tomorrow and see if we can find out something. Maybe I can make a down payment on it. I saved up a bit more than half.
Nice trick. I would not sell the SRV. You have also camo- painted it in Jigsaw and everything. It is your personal car now. You cannot maybe negotiate a small, reasonable interest rate, that could be in "favor of you both", and then pay the rest of the money in monthly payments? That is maybe not something, (among other vehicles, I guess?), Russian Gaz 71 dealers are so fund of? Just a thought. (And different boots? I think it is the first time I have seen you in such kind of winter boots??) Nice day no matter what. :o)
Yes, I can't really let it go :) I will see if I can work something out with him. I can basically save up the rest in about 3-4 months time, but I'm sure it will be gone by then. The boots are Sorel Caribou with wool liner. They are mostly for Crawler driving, but I wanted to give them a run in the woods today as they are new.
Awesome video! I'm gonna try it out right now with my NVA-Tarp (which is basically a copy of Plash Palatka with metal buttons). The birch bark support is a great idea! Personally I don't mind different microphones. But you could try recording the audio with a portable audio recorder and optionally a Lav-Mic for best audio. Do a clap with your hands in the beginning of the video, so audio and video are in sync. Of course cut out the clap in the end ;) But as I said, for me it's fine as it is. I don't watch your channel for entertainment, but to learn and "get it done" :)
No drought here, so the Moose is OK :) I like a 35 liter backpack hunting trips. When I know I will have to walk a lot carrying a firearm, the Swedish LK35 is really good because the rifle sling can hang on the external frame. If I don't have to walk that far, an internal frame pack can be good too :)
Hi Lars, Would you be so kind and tell us the brand and type of the backpack you packed in the plash palatka. Could be very well the pack. I have been looking for for a long time now. Keep up the great work, awesome channel.
Thanks Lars, It is exactly what I was looking for. I found it on several sites such as: the sovietrussia, Russian thunder,Russomilitare, special russian shop, Russian tactical. Not so rare after all or is thee a catch?
That is a fine printing tool in the background. It is too bad I cannot own such a device in Canada. But I can and do own more then one SKS. Have any experience with them and if so what are your thoughts?
That vehicle looks really nice, but it is so large, how will you be able to get around in the forest with it? You will have to start making your own serious roads.
I was going to say. The US armed forces are getting rid of some HMMWVs. 40cm of ground clearance would be responsible in you backyard. But if you are looking at a tracked vehicle, I got nothing.
Yes you can say they are the same :) There are a few variants. The GAZ71 is the first model with a gasoline V8. This is a GAZ71/3403 with a Turbo Diesel and then there ar also the 34039 and modernized ones called GAZ73. It's not surplus. It belonged to some company. Most likely an oil company.
I've had 2 suzuki samurai. Sold them both and regretted it every time. You'll probably feel the same about the SRV, I say save up or negotiate heavily. Or both...
Dang I've got less than a thousand subs, no where near enough to buy me a new Quad, not so awesome lol, oh well, walking it is then. That turret less tank will make a big impact on the forest floor Lars and noisy, make it very easy to track you down but you can certainly take a load of gear with you including the kitchen sink, good luck and atb, Paul.
It is actually just a tracked carrier/transporter. No armor It's quite light at 3.7 tons. A BMP weighs 13 tons. They are widely used in this and other areas like this for transport. It is not only for fun and games :)
@@SurvivalRussia Ahhh cool, there are some dang good big boys toys over there in Russia but more importantly you have the space and wilderness to enjoy them 👍
Dear Lars, have keenly watched the progress of your channel for some time now - awesome stuff lah-lah-lah. Not sure if this has been raised. Just wondering if you have considered the much-praised SHERP as designed, built and used by Russians. That looks like an ATV-on-steroids and well worth your Survival Russia spirit. Is it totally beyond your budget or a project you and your channel's supporters could get behind?
Thank you very much :) I have of course considered it, but it is just way too expensive for my wallet :) even with the channel support. It would simply take too long for making it a Channel Project.
I have a feeling that the first vehicle project (SRV) just died, you repaired it, made a couple of trips (literaly like 4) and thats it,.... no more content,.... should we anticipate the same sad end of GAZ 71?
I actually plan to do a trip in the SRV the coming week. You are perfectly correct though. I have not used it as much as I would like. It has to do with that fact that it is not 100%. The steering needs a lot of work. Maybe a better system than the old one. I will also admit that after I got the Mini Crawler, I realized that tracks are the way to go around here. The GAZ in mention does not really need repair like the SRV did, and will be a much more efficient vehicle in this specific area.
@@SurvivalRussia I like your enthusiasm and content a lot, it was not meant to be hard criticism just observation, Ive recently bought old socialist block car for me to "tinker with" as well, I am completely on the same "wave" as you if I might say so. LOL lars the only reason your backpack would fail is if you decided to leave your LK35 at home and took some other variant. Good video though . great for a meat pack , just butcher the animal and through the meat on the tarp and wrap it up when you have finished.
I have a feeling people will flood to your Patreon page and support the new vehicle project!
That would be awesome! :)

The self tightening knot you made on the backpack from the half shelter is called a "Canadian Jam Knot" here in North American.

On ebay for 135.00 in digital flora.
That is pure robbery. It should sell for less that 100.
