    I wish I knew these before I injured my fretting hand.
    I used to practice like 6 hours every day. Now I have two huge ganglion cysts, each on one side of my wrist. They didn't cause any problems untill I slept! on my hand one night and played like 6 hours the next day ignoring the pain. That was the last time I played guitar. I haven't played anything in a month.
    If I ever get out of this hell, I swear I'll stretch, warm up, rest, everything.
    God of Rock, Please... I want my hand back.

  • @Barbara-ld4ug
    @Barbara-ld4ug 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I found wearing a great bra for posture, doing shoulder shrugs and climbing with my hands up a wall helped so much. Have to stretch my shoulders on my fretting ha d all the time. Naprosyn brought down the swelling. Also stretch in the shower when my muscles loosen Up. Basically walking my hand up the wall as far as I can I always warm up now and watch the amount of work/pressure I do with my fretting hand. Take breaks every 1/2 hrs to 45 min and stretch after playing. Moist heating pads and for luxury I massage my hands and shoulder with eucalyptus oil or arnica

    Thank you for this video. I have arthritis in my fingers. My Dr. had me take up playing the guitar for exercising my fingers (he knew I played many, many years ago). I have to tell you that your information has helped me tremendously. Thank you so much.

    • @rustyshackleford4743
      @rustyshackleford4743 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always thought that playing the guitar made arthritis worse? Can playing the guitar when you're young bring on arthritis when you're older? Or does it not matter? I'm having pain in the joint closest to my finger tip on my first finger when I press down on a fret. I'm hoping it's not arthritis. I still have full mobility, and it only hurts when I press down. Does that sound like something else?

    • @1dandy49
      @1dandy49 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rusty Shackleford Sounds like something else. Arthritis is Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear on the joints, usually as one gets much older. Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto immune disease. Exercise is much recommended for both as it strengthens the muscles and helps keep the joints loose. Then again, like any exercise, warmup is crucial.

    Just when I have a bad day and begin to think the guitar was not meant for me, I stumble across this video. I have been playing through my shoulder and wrist pain for about 2 weeks now and developing some lower back pain. I am a very tall guy (6'5) with long hands and arms . I play a $90 dreadnought acoustic and can't seem to get comfortable AT ALL! Everything here explains what I've been lacking to do and I cannot thank you enough. Plz if you have any extra advice I would highly appreciate it. I am desperately needing help.

    For a smaller neck, where do you find those exactly? And what exactly would I look for? I know Hagstroms are suppose to have smaller necks, but I can't budget a guitar like that right now. It's hard to get the thumb to the 6th string without it buzzing. Any useful information is always appreciated.

    my left hand pointer finger has been immobile for the past 3 months. I was driving with my hair tie around my wrist, going down hill slowing down I turned right fast without stopping going down hill turned right again and at that moment of halfway through the turn, I felt a sharp pain in my finger, immediately I use the other hand to steer. my finger hurt so bad. now I'm not sure if the blood circulation got cut off or if there's nerve damage or if there is a cord in my finger sticking out its still numb ultra sensitive once or twice accidentally used it to hit a note in guitar totally hurt.heeelp.

    Hello
    Greetings from Atlanta!
    Currently wrestling with Tendinitis. I’ve been in PT for going on three weeks, and lost my highly physical part time job(butcher) do to my injury. I’m in the middle of a two week sabbatical, and I am looking for advice going forward. Wrist brace on or off at night? I’ve heard both. And should I not use My affected hand(fretting hand) at all besides my exercises? Or is that bad?

Your video is descriptive, can you give any immediate suggestion to overcome this ache issue due to standing posture - I like to play it in standing! But its also true that my LP is a bit heavy and I'm also an average height person :)

    I usually have a lot of air in my joints in my right hand which is the one I play with. Is popping joints bad for playing? I don't do it purposely it just happens sometimes even if I'm just flexing my hands open and closing.

    Nice video. I would add some things, because you generally don't see all you need to do until you see the painful effects of failing to do it. Besides finger problems, you can end up with wrist and shoulder problems with guitar, if you don't apply the same principles. So you need to stretch your wrists, arms, shoulders, and even into your neck and back as well, to truly be fully, properly stretched out to avoid injury with guitar. And I hate guitar exercises... because I am a lot older than the instructor of this video... and don't want to waste one minute. You can get your hands moving with beautiful music, or useful scales, just as well as with boring exercises. If you are young and will live forever though... you don't have to worry about wasting time like us older folks. ha. God bless

    Jen, where are you supposed to place your thumb when playing chords? I feel like I've developed some bad habits and I think I have the wrong thumb placement.m
    Thanks.

    • @dazedconfuzed6
      @dazedconfuzed6 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Recommended on the middle of the back of the neck, but go with whatever is most comfortable, but if your a beginner it will all feel uncomfortable unfortunately. If it doesn't hurt doing what your doing then keep doing it, but keep in mind it may hinder learning later on and finger range (can't reach as far as you should). I place my thumb on top of the neck on some chords and other harder to finger chords gets my thumb towards the middle, my thumb adapts and moves alot and I never really thought about it much, I just always did what felt right. Remember though, guitar habits good and bad are very hard to break after a few years of playing

    Yeah, listening to your body is huge. Know when you've had enough and STOP PLAYING. I grew up playing in the '80s when shredding was all the rage. It was basically a competition to see who could cram more notes into one measure.
    Four years ago I blew my hand out from performing/teaching/recording 12-15 hours per day (with very few breaks) and have had consant fretting hand pain/numbness/fatigue ever since. My 20 year career as a musician is pretty much over at this point.

      Pain! Joint pain especially: wrist, elbow, shoulder, fingers. Pain that's okay: sore fingertips until your callouses develop. Also some muscle ache when practicing bar chords is okay. But make sure you aren't putting your hand in a position that stresses the joints and tendons.

    Hi! First time viewer, just got my first electric guitar and having fun! Quick question, why do you pick up and down? Why do people fight you on that?

      because it saves looooots of effort, like when you are just downstroking you storke when you hand moves down but when it comes up the motion goes waste, so if you wanna play like 4 strokes in a second you move your hand back and forth 8 times to downstroke just 4 times, you move your hand faster and waste the number of movements. The less effort you spend the more quicker and easier it is to play, thats the guitarist way :P

      Wild Trickster Thanks! Three months in on my Guitar journey and know now the importance of alternate picking. Now if I can only get this nagging pain out of my shoulder, haha

      Samantha Minniear jesus heals, so pray. i believe in miracles... everyday miracles, small miracles, big miracles... i've seen them in my own life and people i know. live in love... it does wonders. And forgive and let go of anger... proverbs tells how these negative emotions cause illness to the bones. God bless

    I've been having pain in the joint closest to the tip of my finger in my first finger. It hurts when I press down on a fret. It's not really affecting my playing, but it is annoying. I'm hoping this isn't an early sign of arthritis? I'm only 25 years old, and I've only been playing for a year. But I do play a lot every day

      I have the same problem and I'm only 16... I'm gonna start massaging and stretching my hands and fingers more and see if that helps. If not, I'll go the doctor. :/

      Rusty Shackleford are your fingertips too dry or deeply calloused? I have to apply lotion all the time, and massage my fingertips. And when the calluses get too out of hand, use a smooth nail file to lower them so they are less rigid. And make sure you are not dehydrated as well; drink lots of water

      I've been playing for a good few years now, but it's only been the last few good months I've got better at it. When you first try it, it sounds nasty so you don`t practice and don't get better at it. I found that barring as many chords as possible helped with your B major, also lets you play the 'F' shape down on the 7th fret for a B ;)
